Listen to it from about 7:06 onwards. Clément Bailly lays down a relentless, driving rhythm on one level while Cristian Vander takes it to another level with his sublime fiddly bits!
Listen to it again and again until you feel it, even if you don't understand it.
@Djonfla that other guy got a little too excited dissing you, but, uh, yeah. Hey, if this doesn't work out, type in "Skeleton Makes Good" into the youtube search and listen to the song by Beefheart, that should be way easier listening ;)
@Djonfla Why would you use the fact that you can't feel the music as a wonderment to why 'anyone' wouldn't like this. I feel it pretty well, very intense stuff.
never knew about these guys until a few weeks ago.. been playing drums for 40 plus years and i know most of the greats. christian is incredible ,kieth moon meets billy cobham on this track.. the more recent stuff is moon meets elvin jones.not to mention the writing, singing and all those great players across the years. i'm sold
Just so we're clear on the matter. That drummer with glasses is a futurian android that Vander summoned as his personal drum machine. You can see his magnetic field twitch at 6.53. (source wikipedia)
Love this stuff. At first listen to any sort of music you're not accustomed to, it may seem weird, incomprehensible, or even down right silly... but, given the proper mindset and perspective, one can develop a taste for any music. "Why would I want to do that?" you might ask. Because! Developing a new sense for anything instantly adds more flavor to life... I find it really broadens the spectrum of your mind in general.

That is a BRILLIANT performance but Damn! The end is cut. This clip shows evidence of a very well-recorded and edited concert. What concert is it, (Is this the Rombas 1977 I hear so much about?) where does this video come from, and how much more of it is out there? Does anybody know?
at about 1:13 when the camera pans over who I think is the basist all I can think is, "First you take a dump in your pants, then you do the "Shit Your Pants Dance" round and round and round you will prance, when you do the "Shit Your Pants Dance"" (If you get the reference +10 Internets to you)
this blew my mind O.O i never knew things like this existed...to think how many steps we took backward in the underground music of today...but perhaps how many steps forward in purpose and meaning? as this band seems to put emphasis on a lack of the audience understanding its music. another genre to add to the pile!
Thanks, Professor. I was already aware of that oh, so earth-shattering factoid little anal-retentive control-freaks like you get so uptight over. Get a life!
@gorillabelly1 Oh, I need to get a life? You're the pretentious freak who goes on a video just to diss the band. I have a life, you're the one who has time to go onto some band's video and badmouth them. If you like Mahavishu Orchestra, go on a video for Mahavishu Orchestra and say "I like Mahavishu Orchestra". You're a pathetic troll. I hope one of your Mahavishu Orchestra albums makes you go deaf, it will match your mental retardation.
@gorillabelly1 Mahavishnu were awesome too. But very different genres. A lot of magma's work is highly choral - and not always (although sometimes) as busy as Mahavishnu. I would have loved to see McLoughlin play along with Vander at some point in some way. Wish I could have seen either back in the day!
You know the episode of Spongebob Squarepants where the entire crew plays at the Bubblebowl in order for Spuidward to impress Squilliam? Patrick played the drums at the concert. Do you remember the faces Patrick was making? I think the artists got the ideas of those faces from this performance and video.
Vander can make as many funny faces as he wants, because, when he does, he's communicating with some sort of spirit from Kobaïa that makes him automatically five billion times more awesome than you.
@Israfvel Kobaïa is a fictional planet invented by Vander & co. It's the setting for the majority of Magma's work, and it "loans" its language to their songs, which are sung in Kobaïan.

"The Jesuits, you mean? That is not what I am seeking, sir."....Elisha consecrated Jehu King of Israel, on condition that he exterminate the house of Ahab; Elisha was Louis XVIII; Jehu was Cadoudal; the house of Ahab, the Revolution.
@birchofacookie Have we succeeded? We think so. Before long we shall have covered with our narratives an enormous period of time; between the "Comtesse de Salisbury' and the "Comte de Monte Christo" five centuries and a half are compresed. Well, we assert that we have taught France as much history about those five centuries and a half as any historian.

the part from 5:36 to 6:21 is amazing ! it suddenly comes to a post-rock part, just after the really loud and dark sound of the chorus... sounds like sonic youth !!
Great to see a high quality video from the time. Heavy metal bands... eat your heart out!!! This is the heaviest band of all time. But what happened to the bass solo at the end - the whole point of the piece?
gotta respect a bandleader who is actually the drummer and actually invites another drummer to play with him in the band AND lets somebody else do the singing.
The singer is so boss at the beginning, his facial expressions and his hand gestures (0:52)
i searched the band magma so that i could see ho they were because my mom used to date someone from the band im not sure if its this one though depends on how many bands named magma ther are but anyways thats awsome right : )
I can't tell if Clement Bailey's drums are even micced for this video. It seems like we're only getting Vander's sound. Which is awesome, but Bailey's an absolute monster, and it's great to hear him play.
these guys sing in an alien language that they made up themselves because all the songs they sing are about another planet. pretty innovative for back then.
@007Pogo yep, the drummer with the weird haircut went on to form the band judas priest and became the lead singer, then the other drummer was also the lead singer in a band named the rolling stones at the same time he was in magma, the singer went on to a band named lynyrd skynyrd later on and of course they all had to learn english
Thank you for posting this video! Magma was not the favorite of the "flower people" back in the days. No fancy laser show or flying bubbles in the room ( they would have bands like "Gong" opening for them, complete opposite) but what an intensity! I don't know the name of that other drummer but what an honor to play with Christian, who was ( and still is) one of the top drummer in the world. You'll love them or hate them but they never leave you indifferent
@HerrSchenkel ,yeah he did compose played Bass, Guitar, Drums on studio and apparently has choosen drums for this live, there is a 2008 live where we can see him playing bass on this piece

There was a time, where music and life didn't differ.
Those guys didn't make music for a living. They lived to make music.
Every molecule in their body was ablaze with sound lifeforms that could not stay silent.
Their music was organic. It embodies all of our hopes, all of our fears. their music was a map to our warped minds.

@007Pogo
yeah, he later on went to form a band named judas priest and became the lead singer!
lol

This song is like a 12 hour acid trip condensed into 10minutes. It's exhausting.
In my dreams i have a special gig on a space station with Tim Hecker and Sun Ra opening for magma.

You guys, come on. Jannick Top is not even in this video. The second drummer is Clement Bailly.
Look up pictures of Jannick from now and from the past, he's short and somewhat fat, with a square head.
Jannick wasn't even in Magma in 1977. He joined an electronic band called Space that year, and was replaced.

Wow--like some band that would record for Cuneiform, Bizarre or Ralph Records. Amazing!
