WAIT Texas Gets Cold Lmfao wow i never thought that texas got cold guess i've only heard about the warm places. And no i never payed attention in school lol
yall people in south texas dont know how to drive on ice wtf come to like austin/houston san antonio we are ok on driving on it but come on man thats nonthing and ur skidding everywhere
@GhostRider351 I seriously doubt that people in Michigan could get anywhere when you can barely even stay on the road when completely stopped, as in this video.
@GhostRider351 I'm still not convinced. Seems like the northern ice storms tend to get a nice coating of snow or ice pellets at the end of the precipitation, which gives substantially more traction. I grew up in Texas, then moved to Wichita, KS. Winter Driving here is a piece of cake compared to the ice storms we got in Texas. When a gnarl y-tired 4wd truck can barely get out of the driveway, how can anyone expect to get through city traffic?
I get a kick of how many people get their panties in a wad over this. I was not trying to get to work anymore I was driving on a deserted road for fun. I nor anyone else was in any danger. I was hitting the brakes and slipping the tires on purpose for the film. I have more experience driving on extreme terrain than most people. See my other videos for proof; namely "dodge commercial".
Very nice video. Everyone that likes cars, specially off road ones, can identify in the first seconds that you was only having some fun. The others complaining and trying to look smart are just showing us their complete ignorance :)
oh god was this your first time driving or what? you were all over the road and hiting the brakes hard on ice!... hahahaha ive never seen anyone do that on ice even black ice when its 5 cm thick.
true, but noone would know not to hit the brakes hard or anything like that, its usually around 58 degrees on cold days here, so its not like anyone would know what and what not to do
I live on a Back road in NH so I know what it is like to drive on that mess... I was only kidding i know they are not used to it. I came here from NC, it took forever for me to get used to it... then again are you every.. "Used to it"?
Loopiewho - then in Sweden, Finland etc people would go to work bout 8 months in a year :)
Seams that in those conditions would be better small car with manual gearbox-you have more control.
Studded or proper winter tyres help a lot. And with racing studded tyres and racing shocks any 1,6 VW Golf would go those icy roads faster than this truck in summer day ;)
Nope. Engine brake would also cause the tires to lock up. If anything, use of the engine brake would be worse due to the pulsing action of the brake force as each cylinder of the engine passes TDC.
Common sense says not every Texan drinks when they drive or talks on the phone when they drive... at least not in the Houston area... last time it iced over here was when I was in elementary school... ages ago... so yeah. but If I was in this situation... ID STAY HOME.
I am from way up North.. and when ice hits texas roads I stay off of em..because of idiots like this driver.. and they do this when it rains here..only they have a beer in one hand and a cell phone in the other, so driver is a hazard on Texas road ways. lived here since the 80's gees dumbasses
Nothing a little salt cant take care of. You folks in Texas think its the end of the world when you get Ice lol.. I love it. Try to look at my videos and see what a "STORM" is lol
I went through a similar experience; but had a FWD '87 K-car that was very old at the time. I had studded winters on front, and all-seasons on the rear. Uber. Big. Mistake. 0__0
those tires look like mikey thomson baja claws or pro comp xterrains, either or... they suck in the winter, i have had a set of both and they are definately mud only tires
A little further south but yes!!! Hastings, MN born and raised! Do you remember the Halloween blizzard? That was fun! Some spots got over 37" Near Duluth! Where I lived at the time we had drifts over 12ft and about 34" in the ground. Hastings and Red Wing got more than the Twin Cities. We also had about 1/2" to a 1" of ice under all that snow! Fun times!
I dont get it your in an offroad vehicle and your trying so damn hard to stay on the road. this is where you say fuck it and drive OFF ROAD, or better yet call in to work ( if anyone else made it in) and stay home.
Actually, real 4x4 vehicles with direct transfer case tend to oversteer really bad when the rear wheels start to spin. AWD vehicles with traction control doesn't have this kind of problem. Let me tell you that where I live, when its storming, almost all vehicle that we see in ditches are 4x4 and SUV... sometime women driven car... ;-)
Good to know! I have EXTENSIVE experience in mud, dirt, gravel, and rock. I have a '86 locking hub toyota 4x4 and a 2006 Subaru Legacy GT AWD - living in Los Angeles. What the hell is wrong with me?
Well, nothings wrong, you're just having a good time with your Toy Truck (86's Toy's were my favourites at that time) and enjoying driving your Legacy. On my side, I have a 2007 Mazda6 V6 with manual tranny, it's a wonderful car!
It don't matter what you drive if you are going to fast you will find your self in the ditch. Where I live I see everything in the ditch! 18 wheelers, SUV's, 4x4's, AWD cars and trucks. I even see a motorcycle once in the snow and no it was not there before hand. I help that person out. He was insane! I have see snow plows in the ditch.
I wouldn't drive on it neather, If I fixed my bicyle that might be fun to slide on. But other than that, I wouldn't kill my self doing that. Nobody perfect u know =)
Nice Truck and really like the other guy said if you cant get out of the drive then stay home it is fun to drive on ice but it can also fuck you up i know cause i have come close doing what your doing only in higher elevations
Actually dumbass I live in Los Angeles, we never face anything other than beautiful sunshine and hit girls in tiny outfits. GUESS YOUR THE ONE SUCKING ASS OUT IN THE COLD!
I hope you weren't talking to me... I didn't wanted to be mean. Here we have ice and snow tires for winter and when it comes icy as where you were, we just don't drive at all, for ours and others safety. We enjoy staying at home with our kids instead! ;-)
Click view all comments and you will understand the order string of comentary better. You will see my response is to this American hating dumbass who thinks he is on top of the world buried in snow.
Oh, ok, I just saw that... Shit, just don't read those comment. There are plenty of comment like that saying mine's bigger than yours... It's just childish. Period. Comments, negative or positive, are useful only when they are constructive... The rest is just crap.
You know something I could drive circles around you in any weather and yes I'm from the USA. MN to be more exact. We do drive in this about 3 to 5 mouths a year. Most of this persons problem is way too big of tires. Might work good in mud and water not in snow and ice. I have driven a 18 wheeler through worse. Try 2 feet of snow on top of the ice!
Yes it does. An tire that is not as wide should offer a high contact pressure and that helps with traction. Or a different way to look at it is a smaller foot print. Its all about the contact pressure and control. spinning/sliding/skidding the wheels don't help any. That is why a loaded 18 wheeler can stop better than one that is empty.
Okay comment coming from a guy who lives and drives in CT ( new england) You are a better driver then most of the people I know, But I know you where "trying to get to work" but if you cant even make it out the dam drive, go inside, grab a couple of beers and get a real bad case of the 24 hour flu, cough, cough, cough! got it.
ice sucks to drive in but at least there was nobody els on the road. the first time i drove on ice it was a weak after i got my license and it was fogy out with allot of traffic and the tires on my truck were bare. was the scariest drove i ever took.
Unless the ground is soggy and muddy, just drive off the road, its safer and more traction (should be frozen tundra from what i see on the road). Just follow the shoulder along.
if you had fun then come live here in canada.. you get use to drivin in that shit real fast.. but it always sucks spendin 45 minutes to an hour scrappin your windows lol nice truck though man
Like JagGirl38 said, shoulda stayed home, less you really loved your job or paid you really good =P. Nice skills though and man...those are some nasty icy roads, wish it was like that down here in southeastern part of Texas...damn subtropical weather!
Fantastic video. If you're a native southerner, you're probably the best ice driver in your region! You're doing more things right than many in Ohio. When going downhill, sometimes putting the right side wheels onto the berm or ditch helps slow you down; more traction there. Park at the top of the driveway, otherwise you may not get out next time. Good Dodge, fair tires.
It works but, only on strait roads with no slopes, less tier pressure and use of motor brakeing and low speeds (be good driver), not blocking wheels like we see here.

Here's what would have made all the difference:
Studded tires - illegal in most states
4WD Low gear - reduces tire spin
Weight on the drive wheels - increases friction
Tire Chains
Anti-Lock breaks (or, controlled breaking using the engine)
To drive on ice, you just take it slow and easy and you'll do it fine.
Kittamaru 4 years ago
NOT low gear, increese power and spin the wheels, the truck is 4wd, witch axle must bee weigthted down? Automatic, no enginebrake at low speed.
Best way to cope is to stay home until the salt truck has driven by.
