i have a standard length m1a, but mines an armscorps. it came with a crap flash suppressor that was actually crooked and i could not sight it in. got a mil takeoff from a m14, now it actually shoots straight
Saw one of these at Gander MTN yesterday for $1800 used with even more rails with this one such a great gun but man with it was a lot cheaper I would totally buy one!
Is it possible to remove that whole top and rail mount and replace it with some wood (preferably walnut) furniture? I really want to just make this a nice old-fashioned-looking battle rifle - no rails or scopes, etc.
The optimal battle cartridge was determined 50 years ago to be a 6mm-7mm caliber. The argument 5.56mm vs 7.62mm is lame. They are both intended for different purposes. 6mm-7mm caliber can do everything though. Just look at the 6.5mm grendel ballistics and cartridge size for an example.
My dad just bought me one!!!! BUT the SOCOM 16 EBR, I cannot stress how happy I am with this rifle, I know it'll be the one I'll carry during a Zombie Apocalypse! GREAT GIFT and GUN
I really like the looks and thought of owning one of those. However it's just a bit to costly for me right now since I am out of work. Have always wanted one though. It does look like a blast to shoot (no pun intended) and would be an ideal home defense or zombie apocalypse weapon.
@hickok45 Several questions. If you would respond I would really appreciate it since I'm buying a rifle in a few days and this is in the running. I have heard stories of the gun exploding from putting store bought .308 rounds in it, should I worry when I get my Socom II?
And do you recommend any lubricants for the slide?
@ringenberg2 I've never heard that.. maybe they put .30-06 instead of .308 through it..? I use Hoppes or WD40 on my guns, as far as .308 rifles go this gun is top shelf. You could pick up a used AR-10 or FN FAL for cheaper, but you'd be better off saving your pennies and getting the M1A.
An outstanding advertisement for this rifle. Had Patton seen one, he'd have dubbed the M1A/M14, not the M1, "the greatest battlefield implement ever devised." And of course we like heavy-hitting carbines! We're Americans! Just look at how we love the Marlin 45-70s and the Mosin M38s.
Hey hickok45, love the channel. I also noticed you used .308 and 7.62x51 interchangeably. Let's not confuse people and assume those are the same round. Most.308 rounds have a higher pressure than 7.62x51. Shooting a .308 in a military rifle chambered for 7.62 could be very dangerous.
@Cozmolyne In Vietnam, carrying the bigger 7.62x51 ammo meant less could be carried. M14 also weighed 11-12 pounds, a pain to carry around in the thick humid weather. The 7.62 round also posed significant recoil when fired on automatic.
@Cozmolyne One word, impracticality. I love the M14, but it just wasn't the right gun for the job. The weapon was plagued with "problems". Ranging from uncontrollability during full auto fire, weight, and it was too difficult to maneuver in the jungle environment that was Vietnam. Remember, original M14's were fixed with a 22' barrel. In my opinion, this is one of very few perfect weapons. It just wasn't plausible as a standard issue battle riffle.

@xxxMRxxxFAILxxx ....im not great but have little problem hitting the 600m silhouette consistently 90%+ using a 2-7x long eye relief scope....right now it is dialed in for some hunting loads, slightly faster burn on the powder (less of a flamethrower), same muzzle velocity but slightly lower trajectory....bulk ammo easy to dial
not to correct hickok45 but it is not a flash suppressor....it is a muzzle break and top notch at that....reduces recoil and barrel lift amazingly well
