He looped the beat so he could lay vocals and scratching on top of it. It's not like he uses a loop station for all his performances, as he has the skills to pay the bills. However, for something as complex as covering De La Soul and having it not come out sounding like shit, looping is warranted.

You can find them on ebay ranging from $90-600. The BOSS RC-20 is what I started with (runs around $150 on eBay), but I've upped to MIDI Pedals + Live 7 running through a laptop.

You can find standalone models, just look for Phrase/Loop Repeaters in the performance pedals of most music shops.

The best I've seen is $300 by DigiTech called the JamMan. You can save anything to it's memory and download it to your computer. BOSS also makes an RC-50 that is pretty sweet but DigiTech has a built in jack for the mic.

Hey there - I filmed this : Shlomo is using a Boss loop station. He explains what he is doing and how it works when he performs live ( basically he samples loops of himself live and can layer them on the fly ). His explanation isn't at the beginning of this routine as he did several pieces with the loop station once he started using it. He also did routines with no looping.

I'm not sure but I think it is a Boss Loop sampler - designed primarily for guitarists.

I think Ableton Live is probably the best software that you could use to do a similar thing.
