  • @boblyblitzbob hey man, do you have a copy of the vocal track i could have? (a cappella)

  • old time sea dog song.well old fcking still brand new lern it sing it alone or with friends this tune is Cool as ice.

  • to be truthful, the "remix" craps up the sound. I'd rather have mono without eco.

  • I feel like a retard because I didn't know of this version. So much better than Nirvana's version, that I still like a lot.

  • Cobain and Dylan both attribute this guy to be one of their biggest influences,

his music doesn't strike me as theirs does,

i guess i just don't have that ear

  • @sn00zer I have the same, nothing to be ashamed of.

  • way to rip off nirvana, unoriginal douche

  • @TechnoCharpie You are joking, right?

  • @TechnoCharpie not sure if trolling...

  • @TechnoCharpie You tit.

  • I really like this song :)

    Where are the fanboys ?

    Don't type shit :(

  • @funkenstyle You know, I thought it was originally from Nirvana...

  • @zep68cd maybe you're not listening or paying attention to Kurt on Where did you sleep last night (Nirvana unplugged) video. Kurt said, "this was written by my favorite performer" and they keep on talking about Lead Belly.

  • @dicem5 Is that so? No I never realized hed mentioned it, well, back to Kurt to check it out. Thanks!

  • What a trip I'm having on this one!

  • @zep68cd Mate I know what you mean!!!

  • Blues is the beginning and the end !! Sometimes it takes longer for others to figure it out. Now go back to your Rhianna videos you are lost.

  • I learned of Lead Belly and other similiar music through bands like the White Stripes, Nirvana, and Led Zeppelin. I'm glad he made an impression on recent artists so I could discover quality music like this.

  • EVERYBODY should create a Lead Belly station on Pandora. One of the best things I've ever did.

  • Shut up about other bands on Mr. Belly's video, please.

  • @TimeCelt hect yes.

    agree my friend.

  • CHILLS

  • My grandad used to play this song years ago. he used to sing it to me when i wanted to go to bed, thank you lead belly if not for you, i would never had golden slumbers those nights.

  • @AgnusObel My Dad used to sing it to me when I wanted to go to bed.

  • wish I had a time machine. I long for simpler times. This is theme music for that feeling.

  • I get that Kurt Cobain covered it and that he's great, but isn't this a LEADBELLY video?

  • @camcurtiss First of all, Kurt Cobain didn't "cover" the song, nirvana did a version of it, he's not the whole band. Lead Bellys version is as much as a cover since he wasn't original, nobody knows who actually wrote the song.

Second of all, this is not a video, it's a picture with a song in the background.

But I agree, everyone should not talk about nirvana on Lead Bellys version.

  • timeless music! Leadbelly is a legend!

  • Lead Belly is truly a legend.

  • Thanks..I have a rare box-set that I don't play anymore...but this was a real fun revisit...just reading his lyrics isn't the same

  • thank you for all the effort that you put in to posting this it sound's great I've been looking for a good copy of this for a while what i have is in tape of a tape from a old slightly damaged record & you can hear who ever taped it was singing along but didn't really know the words .....,. so once again thank you

  • how awsome is it that a song from 1870 can be redone 130+ yrs later (1993 Nirvana ) and still be great ..... i love it

  • Comment removed

  • @munnyay No, the song dates back to the 1870s. Check your American folk music history.

  • Sorry, but using forensic software to split the signal is still fake stereo, not true stereo.

  • so good

  • fuck this advertitizzmineizz

  • I cant believe how could Kurt find this interesting songs and cover them ? he was pure genious

  • @trbossdoggy If you like country, folk or bluegrass, you know this song. Several versions out there, several of them great, including this one. My favorite is Bill Monroe's,called In the Pines, but I like a few of them.

  • I miss those times when music was that good.

  • Nice.

    Still Cobain cover's best.

  • i heard Satan whispering at 2:03 something like SSSSSS ,

  • @malhajjaj idiot

  • i bet he was amazing live.

  • @theo2033 What you have to realize is that back then a recording was just the artist playing it into the phonograph. Live would've sounded just like this.

  • @bubbleheadft no i mean clarity wise.i bet it would have sounded really clear and a whole lot better.

  • @RealStripcity Can't remember mate.Got my drink on.You tell me.

  • @RealStripcity Thank you.

  • Why is Kurt cobain even brought up here? Yes, he covered this. But this is leadbelly. So go take your nirvana arguments to a hole video. God.

  • @TheWingedSquid Nirvana killed this tune.Made it much better .

  • Great job on the mix Bob!!

  • In the pines in the pines.

  • The reason we listen to music today: Elvis - Buddy Holly - The Beatles - The Rolling Stones - Jimmi Hendrix - The Doors - Led Zeppelin - KISS - Black Sabbath - The Ramones - The Sex Pistols - The Pixies - Nirvana - And then you can go whatever crazy direction you want. I'm right you're wrong.

  • if it wasnt for this kind of music there would never be a nirvana so there and this is better than nirvana

  • @all the uneducated haters...... All I am saying is that Cobain and Lead Belly shouldn't even be brought up in the same sentence. Cobain was an over rated junkie who towards the end couldn't even play an entire song that he himself had written(with the help of Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic of course)without nodding off. Stating Grohls talents merely supports the fact that Nirvana wasn't just Cobain, although his heroin sheik did help sell albums at the time.

  • @MsAwesomeK8 What the hell are you talking about? He made popular a whole underground genre when the only music was dance and heavy metal. He isn’t over rated, if anything he’s under rated. All of those 90’s alternative musicians owe their success to Kurt, just like all blues musicians owe their success to Leadbelly and Robert Johnson.

  • @MsAwesomeK8 Dear God lady, your misguided resentments are twisting your view and your judgement like shit

  • Did Kurt ever get that guitar lol? I would sell my house for that guitar now.

  • @rangerbylaw No, when David Geffen said no, that was pretty much it.

  • this is like amazing quality considering it was in 1944!!!!! nice job bro

  • Kurt was mainstream whether he liked it or not. Him covering Leadbelly only reiterated this fact. Leadbelly was covered by hundreds of artists in recordings and live performances long before Kurt did it. Besides Dave Grohl has more talent and brains in his pinky finger than Kurt did in entire body!

  • @MsAwesomeK8 idk what dave grohl has to do with anything... he was a great drummer for nirvana and the foo are pretty good, but theres no way you can say hes that much better than Cobain

  • @MsAwesomeK8 ha, you are very very fucking wrong..

  • @MsAwesomeK8 Shes right,i think Cobain was very overrated, and Dave Grohl was obviously smarter as he isnt dead or a heroin addict. And come on Mudhoney and soundgarden were better then Nirvana

  • @varghatesyou You can't say someone is stupid because they were addicted to drugs. There are plenty of extremely intelligent people that used hard drugs, it isn't a great habit to pick up though.

  • @varghatesyou So wrong.

  • This is amazing! The way he makes vibrato with his voice.

  • FUCK ALL THESE ADS!!

  • Bro this is sick, i'd be keen to give it a go too, any chance i could get the un eq'd seperate files from you? in .wav if possible

  • FUCK RALPH LAUREN COMMERCIALS....I want to listen to Ledbelly!

  • A lot of Black musicians from that era referred to their women as "Black Woman", or "Black Girl". It's hard for most of us to understand this, but they did it to avoid any possible misunderstanding they may be talking about a White Girl. Hard to believe how tough they had it, but maybe that's why the music was so good. Hard times seem to produce the best music.

  • @cypresscoach you're obviously not alive today as our music effing blows

  • @koolkroth1 The mainstream stuff, for sure. I'm sure there must be some decent music, if you search for it. My son did this song, with acoustic guitar, at a punk concert. The crowd loved it.

  • @cypresscoach thanks for the history lesson ive been trying to find an awnser to this question for sometime now really thanks

  • @cypresscoach maybe??????? this is blues. today we just play blues

  • @justagirl123431 fuck you.

  • @justagirl123431 you never even knew him, so stfu.

  • does he sing ''black girl'' or ''my girl''?

  • @paulooh26 Black girl. Kurt Cobain's version says "my girl" to not sound racist. :P

  • @thebobbalo1 the lyrics are lie girl

  • Style in abundance

  • he had no idea that hundreds of thousands of people would be listening to his music on these things called computers on this thing called youtube, makes you wonder what the hell the world will be like in another 60 to 70 years time

  • This sounds terrible.

It's remarkably arrogant of you to retouch someone else's music without their estate's permission in the first place, but to proceed to make it sound this bad is just astounding.

  • @Georgeifyable hey smart ass if you can find a better version of a song that come from around 1940 just please yourself and upload one !!

  • @Pluckyxo mr belly is up there singing the blues with kurt

  • @ItsMissManiac No, he's singing with Charlie Patton and Robert Johnson, not Kurt Cobain.

  • Comment removed

  • @ItsMissManiac that they are that they are

  • @Pluckyxo woulda totally liked nirvana!!!!

  • GO READ UP ON THE HISTORY OF THIS GUY IT IS REALLY INTERESTING. GREAT ARTIST AND BLUES GUY FOR SURE!!

  • @mebuddylee34 There is a movie worth watching too.

  • This was Kurt's-and Krist and Dave's-favorite performer.

  • Leadbelly's definitely swings a bit more than Nirvana's. Nirvana's was cool, though, I saw them perform this live around 1993. If you listen to blues compared to modern rock, then you can clearly see that Leadbelly's guitar playing is far superior to Cobain's. Forget the amps and sound pedals!!!! Leadbelly and a guitar, and a crappy mic. That's all he was working with. Nirvana's in contrast had guitar, bass, drums and a Cello

  • fox likes lead belly

  • It's a really great cover from the music.. But it dont beat the Nirvana version.. I mean Nirvana is Nirvana =)

  • @TcMoDromxX LOL really? Nirvana was around in 1944 too? Where the fuck have I been. This isn't a cover sweetie.

  • @harrycrum73 Soo Many Words Just To Say That This Song Isn't A Cover. Ok, Im Sorry Sweatheart... I Just Want Mean That I Prefer Nirvana Version. I Like This One Too =D

  • @TcMoDromxX You are certifiably retarded, and probably shouldn't be alive.

  • great song great cover

  • Comment removed

  • This song is good, but the Nirvana version is just something else and out of this world. So much emotion went into it.

  • i am a huge nirvana fan but i herd this b4 nirvana's version but i like this about 10% more and every time i search it up i always get the nirvana one

  • i am a huge nirvana fan but i herd this b4 nirvana's version but i like this about 10% more

  • love leadbelly <3

  • In case any one cares, I tell you what song is about. In the American south shortly after the Civil War many black people would sleep outside, because of a very real fear that The Klue Klux Klan, would burn down their homes while they were sleeping. With out question this was sad period in American history.

  • is he saying "black girl" or "my girl"

  • @1SOTODANIEL he say "Black Girl"

  • @1SOTODANIEL he says black girl because there was a few versions of this song this one is actually called black girl not where did you sleep last night

  • @1SOTODANIEL if your a fan of Leadbelly you can get the actual version on a Leadbelly album called midnight special the version Kurt covered it's just the same as this except he say's my girl and sounds better in my opinion

  • @wipers86 most deffinately sounds better

  • Sounds like Jim Carrey in The Cable Guy

  • first time ive heard this version; kurts was great and so is leadbellys

  • I accedently ran into this.. i thought of kurt. and damn the i thought the original wouldnt be good.. but i love this

  • as much as i hate to admit it, the Nirvana version is better for the simple reason that there is more emotion and effort put into singing it other than that, both are equally as epic

  • Sounds great! I've done a strange cover of this if anyone gives a monkeys, it's on Soapy Jefferson TV

  • Ah, sure that he stole this from Nirvana. /trolling

  • poop sure is drinkable after the blending process is complete.

  • I don't know what color you are when you are typing a note to post, or I hear you playing music on a recording. I only know what color you are when I see you performing on stage and you leave a little piece of your SOUL there for the WORLD to see. I can tell if your a man or a woman but, mainly I know who you are by the color of that piece of you that you just showed the world and if you are anything like me; (which usually is the case) that color is BLUE.

  • no need to say "but" i'm black. be proud brother.

  • wow, i was searching through old son house and junior kimbrough, and when i stumbled upon this, I completely forgot Nirvana Covered it

  • I thought that this song was a Nirvana song :S

  • What a dumb coon

  • @chinaXcatXsunflower

    What a dumb cunt.

    You by the way.

  • @deadrabbitsaints you should check out the live version of this by nirvana it is trully gritty

  • @AmethystRants Correct...

  • Brilliance

  • check out Long John Baldry's version.....He retitled it "Black Girl"....

  • @AmethystRants but kurt was a big fan of lead belly

  • @AmethystRants He changed the lyrics so???, that doesn't quity credit to the taht he made don't you think??...

  • Those "Thumbs up if [blank] brought you here hurrdurr" comments on classic songs like this are annoying to the people who happen to just like good music... -_-

  • Not taking away from Nirvana. They did a great version of this song. But theres something about the dirty grittiness of the original that always puts a smile on my face. His voice is unmistakable.

  • Cool! Thanks!

  • thumbs up if kurt cobain brought you here

  • thank god there was nirvana to show us the outstanding talent of lead belly!

    good music never dies!

  • @aforest86 same for ccr lol

  • @MrKiely415 In a good way?

  • Kurt didn't mess up anything he did a great job and turned alot of people on to old timey music mr belly wouldve liked nirvana

  • @Pluckyxo Mr Belly??

    hahahahaha

  • @Pluckyxo i don't think you can say that because you don't know that and since when did lead belly like punk rock?

  • @Pluckyxo LOL... MR. Belly

  • The blues-men are the pioneers of rock, period. This ROCKS!

  • This is a good song, took me 17 years after the death of cobain to realize that he messed this song up

  • I hope you see this! Your work has lifted an arcaic piece of blues from the obscure to the light. Thank you for your work boblyblitzbob, it is appreciated by, at the very least, me. x

  • I love Kurt loved this bloke. I can't see why, but I trust Kurts opinion.

  • I'm pretty sure I slept in the maples last night. And I shivered my fucking ass off the whole night through.

  • The oldes rock and roll song i ever hear, and it rocks. nice boblyblitzbob for this piece of history

  • wow this is shit nirvana made this song

  • @ichigo875 nirvana covered it

  • both versions are beautiful

  • @boblyblitzbob is there anyway you could post just the stems, that would be fantastic

  • So leadbelly murdered someone but got out due to his talents as a musician an you call him a nigger? What about white serial killers? Or latin drug lords that also kill? Who cares ..enjoy the music

  • you are such a worm how old are you rude-uneducated-lack of manners little bastard

  • hi everybody i am from nicaragua, a poor country in central america i started listening rock at the age of 12 when nirvana came around it was amazing to hear this song i did not know that rockers have good taste in real music
