  • Great this video full of nostalgia! Congratulations!

  • nice video; good music too!

my Dad would have loved it, as he used to operate trollies in Atlantic City back in the early 50's before they were discontinued there.

  • Took the 6 and 23 many times.

  • NICE VIDEO I THINK IT SHARES ALOT OF LOOKS WITH THE OLD BUSES

  • How did Philly and other cities manage to escape the bastards who rid other cities of trolleys?

  • nice shots!

  • @craiggaryphotography Thanks ;-)

  • Those are trams not trolleys...

  • @miezatb Trams is a European term. trolleys is an American term. They mean the same thing. Although technically in Phil and SF they are referred to as LRVs, Light Rail Vehicles.

  • @ianjohn05 Trolley actually refers to the wheel not unlike one on a washing line, "Streetcar" is the normal word, like in Toronto, though their streetcars are technically called CLRV's Canadian Light Rail Vehicle

  • these comments... are wrong... this model is used widely on route 15... they are not extinct in fact more were brought to Philly!

  • Great video! I used to ride the dilapidated ones in the 70's. Lots of charm & character.

I always wanted to make an instrumental music video looking through the front window of the Market/Frankford train as it travels.

  • well its is awesome to see these old pcii once again running on their own route! Check it out if you guys are ever in Philadelphia on Girard Avenue route 15~!

  • EXCELLENT video! I did not know trolleys were still used in Philly but am glad to know it now. I regret not having visited your fine town in all the years I lived in the East Coast.

  • Alive and well, thank goodness. :)

  • 60 minutes (I think) did a piece on what killed SEPTA trolleys. SEPTA staged a fake collision with a car and an empty trolley, broadcast it on the SEPTA radio, and waited for the rush of people trying to get onto the trolley to claim they were injured. Even after told it was a sting and it was all on film, the lawyers still sued

  • yes that is correct!

  • How much km of tracks was deleted? How does tram network look like now?

  • Happy memories of my Philly childhood! Thank you!

  • I went to Philly this week and took the trolley going to Darby. I noticed that where this line ends there are some tracks that are partially covered over. What route was that and when was it discontinued?

  • I believe it was part of Route 62 track that connected the Route 13 Yeadon loop with the Route 11 Darby loop.

  • @Tubes12AX7k you are correct!

  • YES, these are the old PTC (Philadelphia Transportation Co.) colors. I was born in 1939, grew up in Mayfair & my Grandparents lived on HARTEL AVE. near the Holmesburg Library. I went to Lincoln High School

  • Is that not the old PTC color's?

  • I believe the colors are from the old PTC era, although I was a bit younger then and can't swear to it.

  • Yes, these are the vintage PTC green and cream colors on the trolley.

  • Philadelphia's trolleys have been in use since the 1930's, longer than any other trolley service in the US.

  • I thank you for your information.

  • Do they still exist? I MUST to visit you. I always dream similar trams in my city (Rome) but I think to be the only one. Rome is the only city in the world with 7 cars for every 10 citizens. (and 6 tram routes only).

    WAIT FOR MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

    Vinicio, Rome, Italy

  • Glad you enjoyed the trolley video. They have become sort of a novelty here, rather than mainstream transportation. Their charm is undeniable. Take care.

  • Is there a full video available of this trip / program? Many thanks!

  • @intheupperroom Don't lose them like we did in Chicago. They rock!

  • In Boston Massachusetts trolleys like these run in regular service on the Mattapan-Ashmont line

  • @tramvinicyus You could also go to Toronto, Canada they have many Trams

  • @TrainmasterCurt

You can go to any major city outside of USA and ride a tram. USA was sold decades ago to GM, goodyear, firestone and big oil.

    Transportation in USA = FAIL!

  • @ianjohn05 I wholeheartedly agree, except Philly and San Fran still have theirs

  • @TrainmasterCurt

Yes, Phili and San Francisco still have trams. But the frequency of service (at least in SF) on some transit routes is pathetic. It is normal to wait up to 20 minutes for a Muni Bus, tram or a BART Train. Just think of this, I get frustrated when I have to wait more than 90 seconds for the next train. I will be in SF next month. I HAVE to rent a car. It is NOT particle to move around using transit. It is just to inefficient. This is what GM wanted and successfully created.

  • @ianjohn05 light rail exists everywhere though... and not 20 mins it more like 10 min...

  • @timosha21 Everywhere? This is one of those "NOT" jokes. HA HA! At least in the USA (Owned by GM and big oil)

  • @ianjohn05 fail... transportation.. that is light rail has returned to many cities (

although it is not as big as it used to be)

  • @timosha21 The only are in the USA that I know of that is expanding its light rail net work is the SF Bay Area. And there the Metro is scheduled to run on certain days and times once every 20 minutes. Now compare it to most European cities where you can live without a car. In USA there is only one city where you can really live w/o a car, NYC. In Europe it is the norm. It even frustrates me when I have to wait more than 90 seconds for a metro train here in Moscow. So no, not FAIL!

  • Reminds me of my childhood in El Paso. We had the only international system in the world, it crossed the border...thanks for sharing...

  • The trolleys were such a part of my life growing up in Philly that I wrote a song about them. I will mp3 it to anyone who requests it....

  • when was this filmed?

  • Last winter during Superbowl Weekend. The trip occurs on the Saturday of Superbow Weeekend.

  • so these trolleys are in service?

  • Knowing what we know now we would have gotten rid of them?

The reason the trolley is gone is because the tire companies were paying kickbacks to city officials to buy more buses so that they could sell them more tires.

The trolley was probably one of the most efficient and practical forms of public transportation ever developed.

  • Tire company kickbacks to city officials is new to me (though corrupt Philly politicians are not new at all!). You may be referring to the "Great American Streetcar" scandal (was Wikipedia refers to it), which was GM+Firestone+two Oil companies+Mack trucks. That's the first scandal. The second one is more stupid: at the very same time Mayor (later Gov) Rendell was promoting tourism for Philly, SEPTA sold it's PCC cars to other cities like San Francisco -- THEY understand tourism.

  • nice trolley,, wish we had those in my town

  • tell me bout Philadelphia.

    want to go there soon.

  • Even if you don't belive me, I know who sent in the idea to put the trolleys back on.

  • very nice well done thanks

    pete

  • I grew up in south Philly. What was the trolley that traveled up to 29th street on either Tasker or Morris.

  • I liked these trolleys better in the old days, now it just seems odd riding them and they are even slower than before. Nice to see that they restored some of the trolley service they took away in philly. We had alot of different trolley routes and now only have about 6

  • They seem slower because the operators are afraid to open them up. Most od the operators were small kids when all the trolley lines closed.

  • great piano solo

  • Have they restored service on Girahd Avenue?

  • Yes, since 2005.

  • Still true today. I often follow them from the Zoo area to Broad Street. Next time I visit my daughter in Center City, we should take it to the Zoo. The trolley stop near the Zoo is really attractive, real retro/deco!

  • It's an island in the street lol. ATTRACTIVE?

  • You have to ride it. It's awesome.
