The segment should have been called, "Dupont Plaza Hotel Arson," instead of a general term, like, "Puerto Rico." It better explains what the episode is about. More like the segment about the Chase, Maryland train wreck in Episode 116, named "Amtrak," not , "Chase, Maryland train wreck."
"C" extinguishers are used in chemical fires. I.E: gas fires, a spilled chemical was set on fire or reacted with another chemical, causing combustion.
However, "B" and "C" fires can become "A" fires or easier to put out by turning off the electrical power or isolating/ removing much of the chemical, leaving the fire the elements its currently burning. The fire will end up being smaller, or it'll burn itself out due to no materials to burn.
thing was that the perpetrators of the fire ended up lighting up some of those sterno thingies (the portable flame things that are often used in some buffets) inside a room which had flammable material including some unused furniture
Things like this are the reason I don`t like being in high buildings. It´s not the height...I love the view...but I can´t help thinking of being trapped.
We stayed at the Dupont plaza hotel 5th floor in November 1981.. We were british tourists on a 2 week holiday this footage sends a shiver down the spine i feel very sorry for those unlucky people who died R.I.P - Thankyou for posting!
My grandparents died in this fire and as it get closer to the anniversary I find myself searching for an insight of what happened. I remember seeing this happen on the news, i remember thinking how sad it was. I remember not getting that call from Mom and Pop wishing us a Happy New Year. I remember seeing my dad break down for the first and only time. Thank you for your post.
vote on the dvd release of rescue 911 to come out on dvd,at tvshowsondvd, com ,it is free ,rescue 911 has 462 votes so far ,if we all vote it will come out ,i had been working on a show called third watch to come out on dvd,it was the 4 most wanted show on there and they just said that it is coming out on dvd,so please lets get some votes on there to get rescue 911 in our dvd players, don't vote more then once or make more then one account they will delete all votes if you do
Wow, i was only 4 years old when this happened, lived in puerto rico, i remembered being the only thing on tv, the news, you could see the people jumping out the windows, it brings back bad memories, that hotel is now the mariott, and i swear its haunted, just walking into that place gives you the chills if you know what happened there, tourists that don't know like to hear the locals telling them the whole story, i used to do that, my cousins best friend and her mom were killed in that fire
I was there that day. I was on the roof removing communications equipment. When I got back to the office (in about 15 minutes) I heard the sirens. I went to the roof of my office and saw the smoke but wasn't sure where it was coming from. My wife was with me that day and while I was working she was talking to people entering the casino (most were to perish). The representative from the company I was contracted to had checked out earlier.
the thing that still shocks me is how it affected 2 members of my family. my father lost a friend who was working for the CIA at the time (he was investigating a counterfeiting case). and the father of my cousin was supposed to be there but a twist of fate kept him from going there
One of my coworkers played hookey that day and went to the casino instead of to work and died in the fire as a result

how the hell did the fire spread that fast?
jacobmasta 3 years ago
Within a minute, fire can spread to four times its original size. It usually feeds off the atmosphere's oxygen.
Depending on what type of fire; A, B, OR C; it can spread faster or slower. Most fires spread fast anyway, b/c of the air's oxygen.
It probably was an electrical or chemical fire; B or C.
If you're wondering how I know all this, it's b/c I was a Level 1 Firefighter.

It was a flammable liquid that was deliberately set.
alexandermakrianis 2 years ago
wat r the different kinds like what does A B C mean and can you just kind of explain it to me please?
fangzupkobrastyle 2 years ago
If u look at fire extinguishers mounted in public buildings, you should see a "A", "B", "C", or an "ABC" designation.
Fire extinguishers designated "A" are good for wood/paper fires. I.E: somebody emptied an ashtray into a wastepaper basket.
Ones designated "B" are for electrical fires: i.e. a shorted out wire set the wall or carpet on fire.

I went to the beach behind the hotel the day after the fire. I remember the horrible smell coming out of that place. I was 18 then.
