  • i'm not sure the girl who RUSHED the stage was just a fan.you can hear her saying to ELT -i made it.maybe they knew each other. plus think of all the police in force.she could of been stopped.

  • people read too much into music...it's a fucking song. yeah, it is an AMAZING song, but it isnt some ridiculous, heart wrenching, stomach churning, life changing experience. it is a beautiful song. that's it.

  • One of the few Rock Musicians that was a Studio level Pianist and could play any style, with anybody just as well as his own creations. The reason he doesn't have the exact range today is during his 1984 tour he developed nodules on his vocal chords. He should have had the surgery but he went ahead and finished the tour with practically no voice and he STILL tore it up. Watch the clip on YouTube of him singing Take Me To The Pilot with the Australian Symphony in 1984. Amazing!

  • i'm a grown man in tears

  • Perfect - Simple and Eloquent

  • awesome

  • Beautiful song. Elton is such a sweetie!

  • Normally I'd be annoyed with a fan rushing the stage, but something is so endearing about the whole thing. Elton grabs her and brings here to sit with him. And her reaction is so genuine. And yet she still sits back a little to let him shine. It was quite moving and I think she represents the Elton/Fan relationship.

  • 3 people did not have their lives saved tonight

  • I can't beleive I'm just discovering this song now. It's my new favorite song and will be forever.

  • Ha! Is it just me or does Elton resemble George W.? (Sorry Elton!!) LOL

  • @TonyTube407 its just you

  • I love this song. by Sanjay

  • I love Elton john And I love this song.

  • I saw two men holding hands on the street today, and i want people to know that i look forward to the day when i dont even have to write a youtube comment about it

  • adore this song - one of his best

  • Elton is the music man and gives us all he can and he is a poet, that's for sure, and if you're sick for some music then he's your cure!!!!LOL:-)Keep it Rockin Elton(**)

  • @kyteddy1 all true.but no poet. Bernie Taupin writes the lyrics.

  • 4 people are dead tonight...

  • I think the no talent nobody losers who are pontificating about Eltons success or lack of it, better go start your lawnmower and get back to work, lol!

  • This song is really beautiful, I love it.

  • This shit rocks

  • He still has a pretty good range today! On some recent recordings from late 2011, he's hitting some pretty high notes (higher 4th octave), and he STILL has the falsetto (contrary to popular belief--though he often doesn't use it that much). No, he's not the same singer he was before his vocal surgery--but it's gotten richer and his lower range sounds amazing nowadays.

As for this song, best versions have to come from Elton's 1985-1986 UK Tour (Sheffield, Wembley, Belfast being prime examples)!

  • We all miss the great range & falsetto. But, hey, I've seen him 3 times in the last year & a half & he sounds fucking great. Voice is strong & intact. He's getting it done with no problem. He's not moaning & barking his way through. It's a different voice, mature, but I like it.

  • Long days and pleasant nights.

  • I can't help thinking about the scene in the Dark Tower series where Callahan gets beat up by the Hitler Brothers. The song is referenced heavily in that scene and this is how I found out about it!

  • he did, he started touring in 1992 but his higher range was fading and 1993 was the last time you would really hear him sing some falsetto notes and his voice was now in middle C range. By the 2000s his voice had got so low it sounded like he was moaning and barking his way through songs. Yes he can still sing but as for his range nah he doesn't have much range. So really it was a combination of everything that wrecked his voice.

  • continued: by 1988-1989 EJ was doing far more drugs and puking up food due to bulimia he was bulimic since 1981 that's why he seemed to yo-yo in weight sizes. So by 1990 he was alcoholic, stoner, did cocaine, and probably wrecked his esophagus by puking so much, it all took a toll on his voice. In 1988 he could hit some high notes like Philadelphia Freedom or I don't want to go on you like that but his voice was wrecked pretty hard. After EJ got cleaned up despite the resting he

  • continued: By 1986 EJ despite orders from doctors to quit drugs and start resting, he planed his tour de force where his vocals were now ragged and shot, his normal speaking voice sounded horrible. Only then when nodules were discovered on his throat caused by constant abuse of his voice EJ decided to get surgery. Still after the recovery EJ stayed on drugs and yet continued to oversing, do drugs and destroy himself ala Elvis Presley.

  • continued: by the fall of 1984 he was blowing his voice and could no longer do the falsetto completely for Bennie and the Jets. Instead of resting, in 1985 he went on a full blown world tour through 1986 with longer setlists more wrecking and abusing his voice, plus taking cocaine for fast songs and use of marijuana for the slower numbers. Despite the trashing of his voice and arrogantly ignoring the warnings from friends and band members to stop destroying himself EJ continued on.

  • As a big EJ fan I'm one of the few fans willing to admit that EJ's voice isn't as good as it used to be. It's not that he can't hit the high notes but it's the fact that starting in 1980 EJ was going on stage high and stoned and started to oversing. By 1982 he was taking more drugs and his songs were played at a faster rate forcing him to sing with more head voice to keep up. By 1984 his touring nearly trippled and he started to over do his performing without giving his voice a rest.

  • There seems to be some confusion about why Elton John sings differently today than he did back then:

Elton John had surgery on his vocal chords in 1986/87 which permanently altered his singing range. His voice went from a tenor to a baritone. He was fortunate enough to recover to the point where he could sing again at all. He now usually plays his classic songs in a different key signature so that he can sing or else has a guest singer who can cover his early tenor range do it.

  • I remember watching this concert on tv when I was a kid - I remember when he dressed up as a duck and played this is Your Song! Time flies im 40 now and the music is still better then whats out there today!

  • Beautiful song

  • i want to be her so bad.

  • 1. Great Song and vastly underrated, IMO its his best and thats saying a lot.

    2. This was a BRILLIANT live version of this classic, vintage EJ at the top of his game.

    3. The way he handled that girl who ran on the stage speaks volumes about what a gentleman he is and how much genuine affection he has for his fans, and he did it with such composure.

  • cool..very cool..grab her back!...I suppose the perfection of the moment singing the song were important..way cool..yes it does appear to be a song at the top of the world! Planet Earth! she said! "I Made It!" -wouldn't wanna spoil her kiss 'thrown back down to Security! @DickLodge68 there are more than a million people in this song if it is also: The Kingdom of I Am Music!

  • Just FYI, the Guinness World Book of Records shows the attendance here at 400,000+ See for yourself! The is a mass of people!

300 years from now, people will look back and listen...like we do Mozart, Bach, and Beethoven. They will listen to Elton John, Queen, and of course The Beatles. They all created timeless music!

  • In rock there's only a few great legends. Elvis, Beatles, Rolling Stones, and Elton John. No, no, no, don't add more, that's it. I'm thinking Elton may be #1 overall though. Just plain brilliant.....

  • Very cool, man. Thanks for sharing :)

  • 08:01 There's a Pavarotti on the stage? :)

  • Well said, @bunzy,,

  • what is he wearing?

  • man, what composure. i'm sure if this would've been just a few months later, he might've freaked the fuck out. this was, what, september '80?

  • Elton is a rare talent in the history of music. He has lived up to his name. He had throat surgery in the mid 80's but he is resilient. His register decreased a couple of octaves but he still sounds better than the vast majority of "artists" that are parading around now, male and female. Just sheer genius!!!

  • Once of his most energetic performances

  • EXTREMELY joy to my ears.....very well put together..

  • Best song ever and artist ELTON JOHN

  • nice ending!!!

  • This is one of my favorite song by Elton. Such a beautiful song and voice.

  • it is the best song EVER!!!!!!!!

  • Nigel Olsson Has A Great Voice!!!!

  • Magnum opus

  • I think that I am Viewer # 60,000. Great Video, Song and Artist!

  • sucks the throat surgery he had ruined his voice

  • @bunzy11 i know and i think its bullshit they tried to say he had better range afterwords what a crock

  • @tmtmoormr better range my ass, the guy can't even hit the high notes anymore

  • @bunzy11 lol, you idiot, he's what..65? 67? and spent all of his life touring and singing, maybe he cant hit the "high" notes as good as he once could, but man, he has more talent in his earwax then you could ever think of having in your life time. I saw him in concert last week, and let me tell you, what ever high notes couldn't be hit, which were very few and far between, he made up with sheer talent, cripes, what are you twelve?

  • @daytona69 WELL SAID ;)

  • @daytona69 I can't agree with you more. Who cares how many high notes he can hit these days? He's an amazing talent and his music alone has gotten me through many, many hard times. What a gift to be able to give to MILLIONS! God how many LIVES has he saved? Right? Want an example of magic? Well that's it right there. Magic! Peace. :)

  • @daytona69 O M G Why do you gotta be so bitchemomma?

  • @daytona69 YES, he has more talent in his tiniest fart than many musicians have in their whole bodies.

  • @bunzy11 , you really are a complete idiot. If throat surgery had ruined his voice, do you think that he would still be one of the most famous, amazing, top selling artists of all time? The throat surgery was minor and had little if no effect at all on his fantastic voice. If your going to post dumb, pointless comments, then at least don't waste them on Elton John, because they mean nothing.

  • wow really suprised anyone disliked this let alone the three people who probably won't be saved....oh well can't save em all..

  • hpuse payments

  • Best Elton John song

  • Woah, no cool shades?!

  • I hadn´t noticed that the lady that he sat next to him actually climbed on the stage and told him something, and tried to leave...but Elton John got up and took her back with him to the seat, LOL. Very kind of him, nowadays that approach can get you a good whacking by the security blokes, ha, haaa....this version is awesome!!

  • Allllllll time classic, totally agree, the acts of today pale into insignifcance in comparison too Elton ....

  • Hoyy

  • What does the line "paying your hp demands forever" mean?

  • @TheSRalston 'hp means hire purchase' as in rental etc, maybe its just a term over here in England

  • @skguy7 Thank you. Now I have to work more and come with an interpretation of what he meant with that line, LOL...cheers!!

  • It is a pity he can´t sing this song in this original key. Because of his throat operation he has to sing it in a lower key which in my opinion, doesn´t sound as well. Awesome!!

  • I love this song. When I hear it it reminds me of how my 15 year old son saved my life. I love you Brandon.

  • Gotta love that outfit he's wearing....LITERALLY. Not being sarcastic!

  • Shining ? Shining? They shouldn't be allowed to look!

  • I agree jazz2020...these people who make like the music they like is the only music to enjoy are the ones who have limited taste! And then they make sure everyone knows how stupid they are! Hahaha!

  • Why does everyone on Youtube obsess over "GOOD MUSIC" and inevitably tell the kids nowadays to shape up? It's always a zero sum game for you guys. I like Elton John as much as the next guy, but I'm not here to convert anyone...Who cares?

  • @PawtucketPatriot66, Thanks for your words of wisdom, I agree with you 100%. They probably wouldn't even know how to shine shoes more or less even tie them! I thought that was the coolest thing when he let that lady sit next to him! Shows he really appreciates his fans! Elton you are the coolest!

  • who's the chick in the end of the video?

  • @xpto1320 I thought it was Kiki Dee, lol...lucky person, hearing this great version at such a close range.

  • still great after all these years..

  • high quality and definition of one top song

  • Cool Suit&Performance:)

  • Saw Elton in Glasgow last night. The man is a legend. Great showman. Didn't sing this, but it remains one of my favs. Thanks for posting.

  • I don't know whether anyone knows this, but the man on the piano at 2:30 is the amazing James Newton Howard, the famous film score composer. He has composed the music for all of M. Night Shyamalan's films, King Kong, I am Legend, The Dark Knight and soon to be The Green Lantern.

  • killer band !!! killer band !!!!! most underrated DRUMMER in the world !!!! pocket !!

  • @rletherer

Nigel Olsson - and completely agree. Him and Dee Murray (bass) were a terribly underrated rhythm combination

  • This song came out when I was a young teenager and it has been my favorite since then, close to 40 years later. Yes, this is timeless.

  • Will that woman on the piano bench please ID yourself!!! You rule. Can that kind of thing still happen today? This concert was only 3 months before John Lennon was shot in the same city.

  • When did he lose his awesome singing voice? I mean, it must have been prior to this.

  • @treid100182 He began to lose his voice in 1986....He got a throat surgery for his vocal cords.....Since then, he almost never sings falsetto....

  • @dbowienlmd1987 I think the reason who doesnt sing falsetto anymore is because it doesnt sound as clear as it did prior to the surgery.

  • great to see this clip again from 71 to 80 no one or band could touch elton in concert.every song always has a different twist to it .but sadly he is older and the voice is gone you can never stay on top forever .point is he and bernie wrote so so many classic songs it has to end at some point .he is truly the king of pop/rock beatles sucked in concert zepplin garbage stones don't even get me started they suck michael lip syncs elvis come on king of country maybe.no one can match eltons gift !

  • she is going to die happy regardless of what happens later in her life. Hell if Reg was into women, he'd have probably taken her to bed.

  • id love to know who that women was, anyone? wow that was most likely her entire life right there, and well, considering where I am at, lol, what I know about this horrid world, that would have been mine too....well (ok, back to my cubicle and filing) lol

  • The Masterpiece!

  • exelente!!!!!

  • p.s. sure, Kenny Passarelli including backing vocals and guitar also.

  • Elton with a great band including Tim Renwick and Dee Murray playing guitars and bass, James Newton Howard in synth keyboards and Nigel Olssen drumming,,i forgot someone else?

  • Lucky bitch!!!!!!!

  • @smilady1 and Blake0496... you're both right! It was about Elton's fear of an impending marriage and getting exceptionally drunk one night. Long John Baldry was the one who talked him out of the marriage (and is the "someone" referred to in the song) but Bernie Taupin (being Elton's roommate at the time) was the one who found Elton laying on the kitchen floor with the gas oven on in a "cry for help" suicide attempt, as he had also opened a window in the kitchen.

  • an absolutely stunning performance.

  • Simplesmente maravilhoso ! Sempre me emociono ao ver este video. belo registro.

  • Was his suicide attempt and Long John Baldry saved him that night!!! Thats who this song is about!!

  • @smilalady1 No bernie did

  • The best[ live] someone saved my life by far.

  • The song it comes from his suicide attempt

But thanks was saved and continued his music ^^

  • @mariacarolyne1 I heard it was actually about his getting married, and a friend talking him out of it.

  • Young Elton is so adorable...

  • did she say she made it. nice

  • My goodness he sounds almost exactly as his studio voice. Many pop singers singing live would sound as bad as me singing karaoke.

  • Oh, what a wonderful video where Elton shows his warmth and compassionate side. Bless him and lucky young woman!

  • The girl said, "I made it!" Would love to hear what she would say about that concert today! What a great thing for Sir Elton to do.

  • Comment removed

  • I wonder if any of the security guys got the boot, or did Elton genuinely take it all in his stride and make the most of it? either way great song, great video great man.

  • Damn that is one lucky lady.

  • I miss Elton's falsetto, but I love his voice now, just the same.

  • what can you say elton man.

  • exelente!!!!!!!!!

  • LOVE this song! LOVE this video! Can't stop watching it! Tim Renwick on rhythm guitar/backing vocals! He's looking mighty good -- and doing a great job! Wish I could have been there, but I was 8 years old then. Looks like so much fun. Thanks for uploading this. Very good quality, too.

  • Comment removed

  • Seems like he is straining to hit the notes, they should drop down for him.

  • @ludwig12344321 When he lost his falsetto in 1987, he started performing some of his more demanding songs vocally in different keys. The studio version of SSMLT is in A flat, but these days he does it in F, which is 3 half steps down. Personally, I like it in its original key a lot more. It's my favorite song by Elton hands down.

  • @tjcoffey Cool thanks :)

  • how could anyone dislike this?

  • @AndrewJBoyer You can't........unless you're a complete moron

  • Bernie Taupin & Elton John Collaborations UNBELIEVABLE

  • Just wonderful!

  • Excellent...as usual.

  • EXELENTE!!!!!

  • Wow, Sir Elton nailed this tune. Can't forget all the good he's done for aids research also. Great man and a great artist.

  • @timmacadocious You summed it up perfectly :)

  • Wow, his voice is not as strong as usual here, what a shame

  • @jethyy He'd shown signs of vocal fatigue in other songs that concert. He probably rarely gave his voice a rest back then

  • I heard he was sick during this concert.

  • Its 4 o'clock in the morning Dammit, Listen To Me Good, Im sleeping by myself tonight, saved in time thank god my musics still alive..... Gives me goosebumps everytime i hear it!!!!

  • just a pawn out played by a dominating queen.awesome

  • She made it!!!!

  • brilliant quality - timeless clip, also after almost 30 years of giving this legendary concert

  • It's nineteen!

  • The essense of nineteen!

  • MASTERPIECE

  • I would give anything to see him preform

  • @Zoe14561 Hes Not Nearky as good as he use to be due to vocal cord surgery in 87 but he is still an amazing showman and pianist!!

  • @bttrflykrs yeah :)

  • from 5:07-5:11 you're like son of a bitch he put everything he had into this

  • Music that will live for centuries. Pure talent

  • We're seeing Elton John in about 4 hours here in San Diego tonight, so thought i would check out some of his older concert vids. So freakin excited! Im 16, and his music blows away most of the stuff we have now. Sheeez, most of our singers today don't even have a live band on stage with em! Tonight will be awesome ! =))

  • i saw him live in okc, and it was great. but he didnt sing this song :(

but hes a truly great artist. he writes songs people can truly relate to

  • I always like the fact that Elton was honest about the fact that he got in to music performing for the fame and money. This was a balls out performance, son of a bitch he put his absolute heart and sole into this song.

  • Young kids pay attention! This here is real talent. Screw your untalentented flash in the pans like Justin Bieber, Jonas Brothers, Taylor Swift ,etc....They and all their songs will be forgotten in 3 years. This man is talented and is a legend. His music is timeless and he's still going strong 40 years after his breakthrough. Those other fools are not even wotrhy of shining his shoes.

  • @PawtucketPatriot66

    fuck yeah!!!!!

  • @PawtucketPatriot66 I've been a huge Elton fan since I was 8 and now I'm 24, I love every song made by this true artist, Justin & Co. really SUCK ;)

  • @PawtucketPatriot66 I Could have not stated it better!

  • @PawtucketPatriot66 Much as I agree Elton John is real talent I disagree with your insinuation regarding Jonas Brothers. Young men with talent have years of training as children The best time to teach someone in their life These guys ar ejust getting going. The Hansons fallow this same issue and so did the Jackson Five Osmonds Andrews sisters and many more. Its just different music you like . That Rock and Roll is gonna rot your childrens minds. Everyone has their choice. Im eclectic.

  • @PawtucketPatriot66 very well said, I couldn't have put it better. this song has literally changed my life.

  • I saw him in '80... It was the best concert I've ever seen, and seen a lot.. He played for moe than 2 hours..OMG, that's the same organ/keyboard player that was signaling w/ me for a half hour to meet up with him backstage.. We were standing right next to him..

I wanted to go and meet Elton, but my friend wouldn't go.. Hilarious!

  • @Shimmeringsmiley so true, people like him and McCartney are Gods compared to this Disney/New Hip Hop crap.

  • I remember watching this concert on HBO 30 years ago when I was 15 years old. Wow, do the years go by fast.

  • @vezina333 Same here!
