Gaara could've beaten Deidara in this fight. Had Deidara not used his C3 on the village itself and forced Gaara to protect it, Gaara would've won due to Deidara being unprepared.

If Deidara was fully prepared for the fight, he could've beaten Gaara without attacking the village. However, if Gaara resorted to using Shukaku, he would've won.
