  • I've just discovered that song and I listen to it again and again. It's brilliant. Love Paul McCartney

  • How much does The Harmony/backing vocals sound like John In Some Parts?

  • John-Paul, who cares when there both on top their games

  • Reminds me of Peppers.

  • so beautiful.

  • this is such a gorgeous song. but all you folks arguing about paul vrs john are missing the point. they were both great. awesome. great. but together...they were IT. they were the thing. i don't know if it was the harmonies, the musicianship, the arrangements, the together songwriting, or what it was, but it was magic and joy and neverending invention.

  • If memory serves, on Revolver, John asked (I think) George Martin if he could produce the effect of going in and out of a radio channel for "Tomorrow never knows". This song has kind of the same timbre.

  • big

     song

  • Honestly, I don't see how this could be directed at John. I am sad to say I looked it up because of such theories but I'm glad I did because I love this song now.

  • Just a genious!!

  • fabulous, perfect little song. but why so few remarks about the music (which is the really clever thing here) and so many about the lyrics (which are relatively trivial compared with other macca songs)?

  • @elgar104 this is one of McCartney's greatest melodies and almost no one knows this song. the middle 8 is stunning (well, it's really a middle 12).

  • @eyescandeceive My favorite part is the majestic ending.

  • I LOVE paul McCartney, i really do, but i honestly like ben taylor's version of this better

  • maybe it was not written for John, but he (John) was a little paranoid at the time and thought it was for him. only Paul really knows the truth

  • not Wings, is solo album

  • This is not a Wings song.

  • dear boy was written by paul mccartney for paul mccartney.

  • Sounds a bit like Macca's unreleased track "Suicide' from the same era.

  • HAPPY BIRTHDAY PAUL!!!

  • Stackridge! - Syracuse the Elephant!!! MsBkirk how obtuse!!! I've been listening to this song since I was 16 and I saw Stackridge when I was 21. So i think they must have been influenced by him, or is that what you were alluding to?

  • I can hear elements of Stackridge's earlier songs in this - that melancholy they had.

  • Mac Daddy Macca

  • My music life is nothing without this monkey. Thank you paul.

  • mom im gonna go kill two people

mom: what you cant do that!

Dont worry i have 182 people backing me up

    Mom:why?

    they dont like paul McCartney

Mom: *pumps shotgun* get in the car!

  • I had God Only Knows going through my head this morning and then the song turned into Dear Boy. Macca's ode to Pet Sounds? Either way, love love love this song. Ram's such a great album.

  • @madlydrawngirl Don't know if Macca actually had that in mind, but it makes a great deal of sense to me.

  • written for Linda's first husband, case closed.

  • Dear Boy was written for Linda's first husband. End of discussion.

  • @Sadpoppet That I do believe

  • You noticed on the back of the LP cover of two beetles screwing one another, a message to John? I had always heard that "Dear Boy" was a attack on John thats why John wrote "How Do You Sleep?". I love "Uncle Albert-Admiral Halsey"!

  • I've been reading some of the comments on this video and I'd like to say two things. No this song was not directed at John. And on Abbey Road he didn't kick of his shoes as a joke, it was just because it was hot outside and he felt like it. Good song though : )

  • @HippieChick445 I'd like to hear some interview Paul telling about what this really is about...It seems John thought it was about him?..Like he did in Hey jude by the way. But then again, Paul also thought jealous guy was about him...Erm...I don't know what conclusion I should draw of this

  • @albuorkka Honestly I don't remember where I heard it but Paul did say at one point that it wasn't about John. Sorry I cant tell you where that was.

  • @HippieChick445 actually, you're thinking of the paul mccartney song "Dear Friend," not "Dear Boy."

  • @eeeebob OH....im sorry : /

  • @HippieChick445 Really? - he felt like burning the bottom of his feet on the hot pavement ?

  • @LODGE4444 I'm not trying to be a know it all....it's just what I saw in an interview : / maybe i misheard...sorry people.

  • @HippieChick445 Hi - no need to apologize - I was just pointing out how stupid Paul's "explaination" is about taking his shoes off for the cover shoot.

  • @LODGE4444 Oh! Well good, kind of thought people were mad at me XD. Anyway yes it was a relatively recent interview where he said that, and I thought of the hot pavement too. Strange it was....

  • @LODGE4444 i don't think he exactly remembers why he took them off so many years later. they were probably just bugging him. Leather can be very hot, you know.

  • @AmonCOCO Wearing a jacket in the summer can be very hot too but he didn't take THAT off.

  • @LODGE444 yeah but irritating shoes beats jacket.. and that was a suit jacket you just don't take those off like a normal jacket... he is paul mccartney. do not question his ways. haha

  • @HippieChick445 And another thing - he took his shoes off because it was hot outside but he kept his jacket on ??

  • John See - Heather's dad - had serious depression/alcohol problems - Paul was a heck of a lot more stable.

  • John See - Heather's dad - had serious depression/alcohol problems - Paul was a heck of a lot more stable.

  • death cab for cutie's cover is great but this is awesome

  • John Lennon, great composer that he was, could never have produced this.

  • @marvy1118 right he would never produce this cause he was too busy producing imagine

  • Comment removed

  • @marvy1118 Maybe, but could Paul have done Imagine? or Jealous Guy? The point is neither did anything as a solo artist as compared to what they did together.

  • @albatross7677 Of course Paul could have created those songs. He could have written those in his sleep.

  • @marvy1118 Okay, Paul should get to his nap and start composing.

  • @marvy1118

No, but he did beautiful boy, which i believe is better :)

  • @Esquich

Beautiful Boy is a nice tune, but it lacks the melodic complexity and contrapuntal ingenuity of this composition.

  • @marvy1118 - Beautiful Boy was a wonderful song but you're right it did lack complexity and ingenuity, but one could argue that John was superior in other areas. I'm not really sure h to explain it, but John had emotional issues, which somehow translated into raw pure emotion in his lyrics. I find that Paul's music, although wonderful to listen to, is most often generic, or cliche; it seems to follow a system, and lacks in thruth or honest desires/regrets. John was brilliant for this.

  • @marvy1118 - ... Although, I'm not questioning John's inferiority when it comes to composition. John hiself said that the odd year break he took was at least in part due to a lack of musical creativity; basically admitting to not really having what it takes to gracefully make pleasing music. Some, respectively, was not really radio material. That's not to denote the value of said songs, but some people don't really make music suited for such mediums as MTV.

  • @ViperXXXXXXX I heard that about john also.

I guess i would say that it appears to me that your idea of Paul's music is too influenced by some of his singles and ignores much of the rest. If you were to listen to his entire solo discography you would undoubtedly have a different opinion.

  • @marvy1118 Honestly, if you want melodic complexity and contrapuntal ingenuity you should be listening to Glenn Gould play Bach (which I love).

  • @rule914 I was thinking of Bach when I typed that comment. :)

  • @marvy1118 No... John will have to settle for the much worse "Imagine" or "Beautiful Boy". Note that I'm being extremely sarcastic.

  • @rule914

Those Lennon songs are nice tunes, but they lack the melodic complexity and contrapuntal ingenuity of this composition.

  • @marvy1118 no compare lennon with paul...lennon is very great...

  • even when paul's dead, he lives forever more

  • This song WAS about John....John See, Linda's 1st husband and the father of Linda's first child (who Paul adopted). Paul was hoping they all could still be "friends', but See made some nasty comments about Paul in the press, and this was Paul's revenge.

  • @MegaObserver1 How could Paul adopt another man's daughter? That is really bizarre. I would never allow my ex-wife's new husband to adopt my child and replace her last name with his.

  • This song is from Ram - which is not Paul McCartney and Wings, but rather, just Paul McCartney.

  • paul isn't dead. Never was. That album showing him walking along with no shoes was all an act ... promotional purposes only. They needed a gimmick and that was it at the time. Got a lot of people talking.,. and it worked.

  • @kwilliamsjr The Abbey Road cover was just a cheap and quick way to come up with an album cover. All four Beatles worse what they usually wore in those days - John in a white suit, George in jeans and a denim shirt and Paul and Ringo in dark suits. Just to be different, Paul kicked off his shoes just before the shoot, just as a little "in joke". It took only an hour, and then they went back to the studio to finish the record.

  • @kwilliamsjr Like anyone bought Abbey Road cause of a rumor that Paul is dead. I bought the album a couple of weeks ago. Was it because I thought he was dead. No, it was because I love the album and wanted to give it as a gift.

  • ele e único e maravilhoso em todos os sentidos! Ano que vem vou atrás dele na inglaterra! Se Deus quiser!

  • @madguitar5 That's the rumor... But I was telling this to whoever posted the video, since it's says by Paul with Wings, when it's not.

  • @tecoomexicano cierto tienes razón, porque es del album RAM, que es de Paul como solista.

  • This song is by Paul McCartney before Wings.

  • Another McCartney song that should have been a themesong for a series; other songs include (Beatles) Michelle, Heart of the Country, Two of Us (Beatles) ...songs like this are TIMELESS.... should be soundtracks, even now!

  • 6 days from now I'm going to see PAUL MCCARTNEY LIVE here in Brazil I can't wait, just being in the same place of this legendary genius gonna be an honour already!

  • Lost in the gorgeous gorgeosity of it all!

  • ESTE DISCO SE OYE COMO SI FUERAN THE BEATLES

  • ....1.00 to 1.18 is jaw droppingly good. Somekind of genius brain explosion..... If others share the excitement this drives in me - and you havent heard got into them already. Check out Queen : Good old fasioned boy. Prokofiev, Symphony No 6....1st movement.....

  • Possibly the catchiest tune he ever wrote.....which given his output....is a rash thing to say I know. Quite wonderful and from an album that Im just re-discovering is one of the best. Period.

The counterpoint and rounds used in here blow me away, but not so as to ignore the strength of the harmonic progression. Stronger than a pint of Smiles Exhibition....(Bristol Tavern - I miss you !). And smart enough to not outstay it's welcome. Crisp and fabulous.

  • @elgar104 Very nicely put!

  • Macca,love your music!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • sheer genius...

  • Excelence pure. Thank you Paul for this song...

  • @AlbertCunning The song "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey" was also on 'Ram', and it was included on 'Wings Greatest'. 'Another Day' was a single credited to Paul & Linda McCartney and it was included on 'Wings Greatest'. Go figure.

  • So one day the good guy and the princess meet in an alley way , though she explains to him them being together might put him in danger. At first he scoffs , but after he remarks ``What's the worst that could happen?'' The villain comes around the corner with his three guards , who beat him up. The villain who approaches the riff raff mocks him and tells him `you have no right to be with her' and blackmails him that if he gets near her he will be arrested for kidnapping.

  • @Retrofanatic10 i don't get it.

  • @AmonCOCO You're not really supposed to. I wrote that awhile back. I have a very active imagination , and when I was 15 and heard this song , it made me think of a main character and his nemesis in a love triangle situation. Think about it ``Guess you never know how much you missed.'' That's the bad guy telling the good guy , I got the girl , you don't , ha ha ha. It has the cynical moodiness vibe to it , it's not really cheerful if you listen to the music carefully.

  • @Retrofanatic10 Similiar situations in movies/tv would be these ``Popeye'' , ``Balto'' , ``Aladdin'' , ``Beauty & the Beast'' , ``Pebble & the Penguin'' , ``Back to the Future'' , ``Batman''

  • This is a pretty cool song , it has the makings of a *dare i say* villains song. Ok picture this : the female character ( the love interest of the good guy ) is reluctantly engaged to the villain ( the king's best captain ). A poor humble riff raff ( the good guy ) falls in love with the girl , she after meeting him is in love with him too. The villain questions her where she has been , but she tells him a girl just needs time to herself , which makes him suspicious.

  • Always loved this song--the harmony with Linda is great. Yoko could never have achieved with John what Linda did with Paul.

  • @kennyt1230 Well sadly John and Yoko never had another chance to make music after 1980 like Paul and Linda....

  • is this with wings? or is it off RAM before he started wings?

  • @M32Steven No its his solo career RAM is just Linda and hi,m.

  • this is not about lennon its about Linda. ex Too Many People is about lennon

  • dear boy could be a beatles song, with lennon's and harrison's choirs

  • @sebgereda All RAM songs and also 'Maybe I'm amazed" could be potential Beatles songs, they probably would of been to if the band stayed together a bit longer.

  • un gran compositor y un gran interprete de su propia musica. 10 estrellas.

  • More singer should do these kind of amazing harmonies! I would listen to it more if they did.

  • Faul has some great stuff. It's no wonder they- let it ride. Poor (P)fools.

  • I'm a metalhead, a nihilist, a misanthrope, and this song brings tears to my eyes.

  • This song makes me sad about the one who got away, but I was younger! I missed a lot, but it still hurts.. this song feels like heaven laughing at hell. When you take away the flames, all you got is darkness and shame. Hee hee..

  • you ar wromg its about pauls relationship with linda, and how it blown him away how he fell in love with her so fast..........Pauls words not mine check out the paul encyclopedia

  • Great song, great album, one of my favourites!

  • One of his best with regards to harmonies and melodic arrangement. He's a true genius for that.

  • Still two Beatles alive = Two cool Dudes.

  • one of paul's best!

  • i love his voice: so calming, powerful and perfect

  • paul's voice is delicious

  • @mecaesare not necessarily the words I would have used, but yeah.

  • I'm diggin' the hell out of this tune.

  • I have that album at home (in vinyl of course) this is my favorite of Paul McCartney <3

    Thanks for sharing. 5*

  • @grandehillusion Me too I like this album better than Band on the Run or Tug of War (both are great albums though)!

  • this is by Paul McCartney and his wife Linda.- It's not by the Beatles, Wings, or any band.

  • @4FabBEATLES Actually Denny Seiwell played drums on this album, and many future songs like Dear Friend and Little Lamb Dragonfly where written during this period. Your right that its credited to Linda and Paul, but in essence it is a wings album.

  • i'd say this one is for lennon! who's with me?

  • @joaormedeiros

Not written with Lennon in mind.

    It´s written for Linda´s ex-husband

    Joseph Melville See

  • @joaormedeiros it was for Linda's ex...not Lennon

  • Frigging brilliant, melodic material worthy of Vivaldi.

Of course there was a very fruitful rivalry between McCartney and Lennon, but also between McCartney and Brian Wilson, who were both as inspired by Mozart as Chuck Berry, a beautiful combination.

  • felt the same way when i heard it.

  • Hadn't listened to this for years - and now I remember how much I loved this tune, and indeed the 'Ram' album, desperately uncool as it was at the time. 40 years on, who cares about all that? There's some great tunes, smart arrangements and some hot performances from McCartney. You can see why the wonderful Green Gartside of Scritti Politti pays such glowing tribute to the Paul'n'Linda recordings of the early 70s. Check out the Death Cab for Cutie live version on this site: it's spot on.

  • this record isn't recorded with the wings.

    they did ot ever exist.

    it's pul and linda.

  • 10 ESTRELLAS. IMPRESIONANTE.

  • Great harmonies

  • At the time this LP came out, Wings did not exist yet. Paul played most of the instruments himself and did several background singing too.

  • if paul is dead, his substitute is a freakin' geniusssss! macca forever! beautiful, beautiful tune. period.

  • @glauberovsky lol that is just what i think

  • thanks for uploading these songs. awesome album

  • So true wolf. Love Mr Bellamy. What a song.

  • Paul's best songs weren't even his singles. Stuff like this makes converts out of people who thought Paul was nothing but fluff. This, Rinse the Raindrops, Backseat of My Car, Beware My Love, Here Today, Mistress and Maid, Calico Skies, 1985, Wanderlust, House of Wax, Mr. Bellamy, Monkberry Moon Delight -- that's the real Paul.

  • Basically everything on the 'RAM on LA' album?

  • Two Many People was directed at John. You took your lucking break and broke it into. also theres a pic of a beetle screwing another beetle on the cover.

  • okay at first i didnt see how paul was attacking john so i went and looked up the lyrics and if you squint you maybe could make out why john thought paul was attacking him. i guess from johns point of veiw pauls saying that john was never there for him in the end and he was feeling like shit, that is till his lovely linda came and made him happy again. so yeah.

  • also from johns Point of view he's also saying johns love will never be as half as good as pauls love with linda. thats all i could get. also, great song!

  • Paul revealed earlier this decade that he directed "Dear Boy" at Linda's first husband, John Melvin See. Her marriage to See lasted from 1962-65. Paul adopted their one daughter Heather shortly after marrying Linda. See committed suicide in 2000, and Paul revealed the story behind the song shortly after that.

  • Beautiful melody with very poor arrangement. Sir George Martin, where you was?

  • ok, and why did John think that it was against him?

  • Comment removed

  • Esta cancion tiene aires de los primeros Queen como "nevermore" y "my fairy king".

  • this song fu****g rocks

  • wonderful song, one of his best in my view

  • My favorite solo album from Paul.

  • this isnt paul mccartney and wings. its credited to paul and linda mccartney

  • the beatles were my favorite band

it just makes me sad when i think that 2 of them are dead

  • Im sure this is a song that would have been a Beatles song if they were still together when Paul wrote it. . Shame. It would have been great to hear Paul, George and john's Harmonies on this

  • Awesome fucking song!

  • can someone send me the whole RAM album?

  • Hey fandino123,

I have the RAM album and you too can have it by simply buying the CD or downloading it at itunes.

  • Id rater just get it from a cool person

  • is anybody else reminded of panic at the disco? you can see where their success came from, lol.

  • This is not from wings, all of this is written by paul. Wings only did pop crap with poorly written piano, nothing good like this.

  • omfg the best backup vocals ive ever freakin heard!!!

  • The song is about Linda´s first husband. PERIOD. John was slightly paranoid at the time anf thought it was about him.

  • I guess this song is a jab at John, no?

  • Despite two songs on the RAM album having references to Lennon (Too many people, 3 Legs) this song is directed at Linda Mcartneys ex husband,John Melvin See, who she had divorced long before she met Mcartney.

It's just a straight love song basically saying she's now his and he never realised what a good thing he had.

Mcartney has gone on record at feeling a bit sad about the lyric as a number of years later See took his own life through a gunshot wound.

  • Supposidly, Lennon took it that in that way and then wrote "How do you sleep?".

  • no its 2 linda mcCartneys ex husband. just fyi, ur gonna get lots of peeps pissed at u if u ask a dumb question b4 reading other answers

  • Yeah like I care if other peeps get pissed. Ha!

  • what is peeps??

  • I think everyone should come to the realization that even though they had that agreement that all the Beatle songs would get the " Credit of Lennon and McCartney" lets face it ,99% of all of Paul's solo and Wings songs would have been Beatle songs.....Lennon didn't do much for years, his best work unfortunatley was right before he was killed.

  • lennon was good up to 1971 (Imagine) thereafter he lost his spark of genius. macca's material retained the touch of genius till band on the run, tho since then he's done many songs that are brilliant and possibly blessed with that genius vitality. some of lennon's 1980 material was very good (woman, wheels, starting over, nobody told me) but he had lost the spark. let's face it it's better the beatles broke up when they did.

  • No Wings didn't outsell the Beatles not even close, but I did like Wings...love alot of their songs, too bad it all fell apart when Paul was busted trying to bring pot in from Japan...I don't know why exactly that broke the group up, but that was the beginning of the end for sure unfortunately...

  • In your opinion, and only yours..
