I've been reading about this. It has been said that this dam messes with the ecosystem by creating strange storms. There has also been about 91 collapses around the shore around the reservoir due to extreme pressure and flooding. Already 1.3 million people have been displaced because of the dam, and it is killing multiple aquatic species... Sure, it may produce 18000 megawatts of power, but people need to look at the bigger picture.

@hobatu The cultural relics were a lot more valuable to us than to people who do not have a genuine interests in our history, and as such, we have done to our best to preserve as much as possible the values of them. In a mammoth projects like this, there are always gives and takes - and I think this is the best balance that one can offer on earth!

Hochtief, the company which was contracted to do the preliminary study on whether a 3GD was economically sound said, 'no'. Largely because when you stop a river which carries as much sediment as the ChangJiang you get inordinate ammounts of sedimentation, which in turn lowers the water level, and thus water pressure. Never mind the millions of people in northern Hunan and southern Hubei who's shit and piss goes into that new lake everyday, creating a an ecological nightmare.

The main problem is that the 3 Gorges Dam is in an earthquake zone!!!So if there is a strong earthquake that will damage the dam, the huge water masses storm the dam and the earth is torn out of its axis and you propably can emagine what consequences this will have!Yes, 10% of Chinas electricity comes from the Gorges Dam, BUT don't forget that 1500 towns & 4400 villiages were FORCED to resettle in big cities! And now all these people are VERY VERY POOR!!

The flow rate at this area of the Yangtze is much higher now than in 1998, when almost 4,000 people died and 15 million were left homeless.

The other name for this, Chang Jiang ("long river"), would be known as "Sang Gang" by the Koreans.

If you have done the research then you should know that that the floods of 1954killed 33,169 people and forced18,884,000 people to mov. These sort of events have happened a countless number of times throughout Chinese history and the building of the dam was to prevent, if not, lessen the impact of such catastrophic events. The dam will be viewed as a positive construction just like other works such as the Grand Canal of China.

flood valuable farmland and animal habitat
capture sediment which backs up, restricts water flow and eventually reduces hydroelectric potential
endanger freshwater habitats
spread diseases by encouraging insects that thrive in stagnant reservoir water
submerge archaeologically and culturally significant sites
introduce the risk of catastrophic dam failures.

I've been reading about this. It has been said that this dam messes with the ecosystem by creating strange storms. There has also been about 91 collapses around the shore around the reservoir due to extreme pressure and flooding. Already 1.3 million people have been displaced because of the dam, and it is killing multiple aquatic species... Sure, it may produce 18000 megawatts of power, but people need to look at the bigger picture.

2. Eco-scientists and biologists are successfully breeding endangered species, such as the most notable Yangtze Sturgeons ... etc.. It will take time for the species to adapt to the environment
