I wonder whather the helicopter noise at the tail end wasn't inspired by the Wall (1979) by Pink Floyd. One of my favorite songs by Kate Bush all the same!
There was a time when pop music could be art. When a pop artist could produce something that would take the listener out of their comfort zone and make them question the world they lived in. This was one of those moments.
English pop music in the 80s when it was allowed to be exactly that. Long before the days of Brit pop had the chance to taint English music with its 'coolness'. Today is another story for pop music from this island, with the likes of the Xfactor, Pop idol and all the rest. How much more in the 80s were artists allowed to be themselves? The proof is shown here!
creepiest part is that it looks like the military actually got what it wanted and now has the sound according to the video. they just used the science team as the "ultimate test subjects" in the whole thing.
ah, for the days when music videos told a story... Also, anyone ever notice how similar the plot of this video is to the Monty Python "Funniest Joke In the World" sketch? Makes me wonder if both weren't based on the story of some real-life WWII-era Ministry of Defence project.
Finally! A coherent narrative to portray a complex plot, a music video that tells it like it is while exhibiting some advanced production values, by Kate Bush no less. Cloudbusting was another good example in this genre. I guess they can't all be like this but since this was my first opportunity to view this fine short film, I'm happy to register my gratitude. Bravo!
@Danceintothelightnig I loved him in a bit of Fry and Laurie and Blackadder before he went to the USA to play an american doctor, which he does very well too;-)
When this first aired back in the day i was so enamoured by this beautiful talented lady and horrified at the same time she was pure class no one has bettered her.
I was really shocked as I first got to see it! This is so damn good! The video seems timeless despite today's quick progress. And Kate's music... what can I say? It speaks for itself! I guess almost everyone can feel its grandeur!
does anyone know what the snapshot at 3 minutes and 52 seconds is? It doesnt seem like the old guy buried in whatever that grey stuff is. Or is it just me? :P
Fantastic song/story/video btw, There's no one like Kate.
...NO...., dear Dutch {?} mate... I'm pretty sure that she's a .... W I T C H !!!!! (naturally, in a positive meaning...). That made me shivering all these times when I heard or saw her in my life... My faves are "Breathing", "Army Dreamers", "Wuthering Heights" and many other early masterpieces... But this one is truly Sci-Fi HORROR Classics' state-of-the-art piece!!!! Love it since accidentally downloaded and saw it 9 years ago (one of the first clips d-loaded over Morpheus!!)...
OMG!! I've seen this video at least 20 times over the years and didn't realize that Dawn French of "French & Saunders", Hugh Laurie of "House" were in it!!!
i've said this on facebook, but watching this again, I'll repeat it. There are some good, new musicians out there, but the major asset many groups today have is that this generation doesn't listen to anything over 10 years old.
I seldom see or hear anything as thought provoking, or mesmerizing as Kate Bush was and still is.
Where the Hel is Gary Oldman in this? I can't see him. But a few other notable cameos...
The kindly old professor is played by the late Richard Vernon (Slartibartfast in the radio and TV Hitch-Hiker's), the evil military man is Peter "Genial Harry Grout" Vaughan (also notable for Citizen Smith, Time Bandits and Brazil), the screaming lunatic is Kate's brother Paddy, and Nigel Kennedy did the violin solo. A real all-star production.
@kazozaman1 Yup. One of Englands finest comedians/actors - Hugh Laurie. Never been a fan of House myself, but I adore the comedic work he's done with Sthephen Fry.
This song must have written by Kate Bush for the 'Chernobyl disaster' that happened 6 months before the release of this song (october 2006). This song and video symbolizes how dangerous are experiments contrary to nature...Hence the board 'prohibited' at the end of the video like Chrnobyl became a prohibited area (:
@Vasarnikos the song and narrative of the video fully explain what is going on...it's about a military experiment to create a weapon using sound that will kill people...nothing at all to do with the Chernobyl disaster whatsoever...I don't normally post to correct people but you are so off the mark I felt a need to do it...
@seventytwonames I was talking about a real historical fact that was 'possibly' a motive 4 Kate at the period she wrote the song.As 4 the video she directed I used the word symbolize (the behind meanings which u don't seem 2 b familiar with I'm afraid!).And when u talk 'bout artist motives u can never b 2 sure because all artists don't want 2 discuss much about the exact reasons 4making a piece of art...It is/could be useless or even (worse) harmless 2 do so-just like your correct observations:P
@Vasarnikos There's no need to be afraid, I am familiar with the concept of symbolism. I'm also familiar with the concept of someone who through their own pomposity writes a load of nonsense about a video in order to try to elevate themselves by pertaining to see something that nobody else can. You can speculate about anything but most rational, normal people deal in facts, and the clear fact is Kate Bush wrote the song about sonic weapons.
@seventytwonames You just prove your sad shallowness here with your comments...It's nothing but normal 2 see things in your own way and not try to make people see only the one (clear) way. This is called fascism so you better correct other people like your partner who undoubtly must have full freedom of choise and opposition living with ya! (:
@Vasarnikos Chernobyl might have been some inspiration - not sure. But I've also heard that the song was inspired by some mad old military theories (not sure which military) about the use of sound as a deadly weapon in war. As she says in the song "all they wanted was a sound that could kill someone from the distance". Apparently they decided the most terrible sound was the scream of mothers who's told about the death of their children.
Amazing music video, one of Kate Bush's best. And thank you all for your commentary and fun facts!I spotted Dawn French(whom I love!)in this film, but Hugh Laurie and Gary Oldman??DID not know that!!!:)
Yep, that is Gary Oldman and the scientist who passes out near the phone is Hugh Laurie from the TV show House (he is actually British). She liked to use bona fide actors in her videos- Miranda Richardson, Donald Sutherland...
I remember watching a collection on Kate Bush's videos when I was younger with my Dad (I'm 18) and to this day, I'm not even joking, this video still manages to scare the poo out of me. haha. Good song though! :)
@xxrainbowsxx Agree. It scares the living daylight out of me. I recently watched the mini-series "Steven Kings The Stand", and the opening of it reminded me of this video and brought back memories of me sitting alone in the couch after school tormenting myself with this scary/beutiful thing.
Such a wonderful video. It actually tells the story of the song (and Kate Bush has had a lot of songs that actullay have stories). It looks like it could almost have been a Doctor Who episode.
According to The Men that Stare at Goats, the US military was experimenting with "silent sound" around this time period, and Ayn Rand in Atlas Shrugged, published in 1957, described such a thing as Project X.
The song tells a story about a secret military plan to create a sound that is horrific enough to kill people. If i wasn't hearing the music,i would have taught this is music video for Slayer's Angel of Death xD.Seriously, great song, video, they just don't make music like this anymore.Today it is just SELL SELL SELL...
