  • This video used to terrify me when I was little! It still creeps me out now. But The the lyrics are gold!

  • I used to fap when seeing Kate Bush, then I took this music video to the eye.

  • I wonder whather the helicopter noise at the tail end wasn't inspired by the Wall (1979) by Pink Floyd. One of my favorite songs by Kate Bush all the same!

  • @lyonslaforet That is exactly where it was taken from.

  • House!

  • we recorded it , and put it into or machine ....

  • brilliant video,!! i KB is not just an amazing singer-songwriter, musician, producer and director she is also a master storyteller

  • Best ever....so intense !

  • Raiders of the Lost Archives :)

  • Pardon, what's this song about?

  • @lucypuddlejumper How the military tried to use sound to kill but it backfired on them because in truth they had no idea what they were doing.

  • Stephen Fry on the new album. She's nabbin the lot!

  • Hugh Laurie at 0.47

  • @nGrEng I thought it looked like him!!

  • you people are nuts. I love Kate, this is the worst video she ever made. She can get a bit cheesy at her worst - and this is her worst, ever.

  • There was a time when pop music could be art. When a pop artist could produce something that would take the listener out of their comfort zone and make them question the world they lived in. This was one of those moments.

  • Wow,I love this song!

I too have made a video to it...

  • English pop music in the 80s when it was allowed to be exactly that. Long before the days of Brit pop had the chance to taint English music with its 'coolness'. Today is another story for pop music from this island, with the likes of the Xfactor, Pop idol and all the rest. How much more in the 80s were artists allowed to be themselves? The proof is shown here!

  • creepiest part is that it looks like the military actually got what it wanted and now has the sound according to the video. they just used the science team as the "ultimate test subjects" in the whole thing.

  • my mum loves Kate bush but i love the video

  • my mum loves kate bush but i love the video

  • my mum loves kate bush but i love the video

  • ah, for the days when music videos told a story... Also, anyone ever notice how similar the plot of this video is to the Monty Python "Funniest Joke In the World" sketch? Makes me wonder if both weren't based on the story of some real-life WWII-era Ministry of Defence project.

  • @billd66 The Brown Sound

  • @billd66 wall,s of Jericho;-) destroyd by sound, there,s even a de Jerry-co working on tthis project ;-)

  • Hahaha!

Dawn French and Hugh looking amazing as usual :L

  • Where is dr. House in this video?

  • @maciekschnitzer 0:48 there's house!

  • @maciekschnitzer From 0.47,maybe he looks a bit different if you only know hin as DrHouse;-) and this video is from 1986;-)

  • The US military is torturing people with music.

  • poor poor DEL !

    haha (chuckles)

  • 3:52 House overdosing on Vicodine

  • 9 people must have worked in the sound weapons research centre ....

  • Great song.

  • This music both pleasures and thrills....I hope it isn't going to kill me.

  • this song came out in the 80's.

Now,sound weapons are real and in use

  • Kate kills Del :o

  • dr. HOUSE! hugh laurie!!

  • Finally! A coherent narrative to portray a complex plot, a music video that tells it like it is while exhibiting some advanced production values, by Kate Bush no less. Cloudbusting was another good example in this genre. I guess they can't all be like this but since this was my first opportunity to view this fine short film, I'm happy to register my gratitude. Bravo!

  • The ending is scary! Kate BANSHEE Bush is free and is going to sing soon :))

  • A sound weapon exists now, unfortunately..

  • wow thats really Hugh Laurie

  • It's not lupus @ 0:47

  • House M.D. - The Beginning :)))

  • Gloomy Sunday?

  • Sure it's Hugh Laurie but how could you have missed Dawn French (the professor's assistant?

  • Is that... Hugh Laurie?

  • Well, Hugh has come a long way in his acting career (thank goodness!) LOL

  • is this a kate bush site or retards r us

  • is this a kate bush site or retards r us

  • No wonder it all went terribly wrong.

I mean, what were the military thinking by tasking this to the Vicar of Dibley and Dr.House?

  • @KlaxonCow

    LOL xD

  • @KlaxonCow And Grouty from Porridge

  • Inimitable HUGH LAURIE in an image of the doctor....House, M.D.)))

  • OMG, at 0:49 you see Hugh Laurie :D

P.S. For those who do not know who Hugh Laurie is:

    Google it !

    No, i will tell you:

    It is Dr. House

  • @Danceintothelightnig I loved him in a bit of Fry and Laurie and Blackadder before he went to the USA to play an american doctor, which he does very well too;-)

  • THIS VIDEO SCARED THE HECK OUT OF ME WHEN I WAS LITTLE.IT STILL DOES!!

  • @fashiondesigner124 Couldnt agree more, scared the absolute bejabbers out of me,lolol

  • noooooooooooo hugh why did he have to die

  • And there's Dawn French, friend to several musical geniuses :>)

  • Its real.

  • When this first aired back in the day i was so enamoured by this beautiful talented lady and horrified at the same time she was pure class no one has bettered her.

  • I was really shocked as I first got to see it! This is so damn good! The video seems timeless despite today's quick progress. And Kate's music... what can I say? It speaks for itself! I guess almost everyone can feel its grandeur!

  • Omg i love the way she says 'bad' at 2:20

amazingly talented woman i love this song especially the violin solo, really captures the essence of the video and music

  • First time i have seen that video! I Just Don't Know What To Say!!!!!!

  • does anyone know what the snapshot at 3 minutes and 52 seconds is? It doesnt seem like the old guy buried in whatever that grey stuff is. Or is it just me? :P

Fantastic song/story/video btw, There's no one like Kate.

But dont forget she is also just human ppl ;D

  • @banijntje

...NO...., dear Dutch {?} mate... I'm pretty sure that she's a .... W I T C H !!!!! (naturally, in a positive meaning...). That made me shivering all these times when I heard or saw her in my life... My faves are "Breathing", "Army Dreamers", "Wuthering Heights" and many other early masterpieces... But this one is truly Sci-Fi HORROR Classics' state-of-the-art piece!!!! Love it since accidentally downloaded and saw it 9 years ago (one of the first clips d-loaded over Morpheus!!)...

  • @banijntje It's an old guy lying on his back and the grey stuff is smoke (is that the grey stuff you mean?). And he's got a fallen box on his chest.

  • Not Gary Oldman... Is HUGH LAURIE! :) The guy who fall beside the phone when the dream monster attack him

  • @Zonzolana I think Gary Oldman is the guy strapped into the seat that the "ghost" flies around? Cheers!

  • @SMCNI1968 Actually, I think that guy was Kate Bush's boyfriend at the time (and her bass player). Can't remember his name right now.

  • Lyrics, please. Or captions.

  • @davidqxo you can just google that! Type in the name of song and artist and word lyrics and you get several sites that provide lyrics

  • OMG!! I've seen this video at least 20 times over the years and didn't realize that Dawn French of "French & Saunders", Hugh Laurie of "House" were in it!!!

  • This song is too good to be true....

  • My son loves this and watches it over and over again :-) The scary Kate Bush always gives him a fright! lol

  • Professor Jerry Coe.....ha! I get it!

    /watch?v=CxD8ivHM2v8

Anybody know who the gentleman at 3:31 is?

  • i've said this on facebook, but watching this again, I'll repeat it. There are some good, new musicians out there, but the major asset many groups today have is that this generation doesn't listen to anything over 10 years old.

I seldom see or hear anything as thought provoking, or mesmerizing as Kate Bush was and still is.

  • Where the Hel is Gary Oldman in this? I can't see him. But a few other notable cameos...

The kindly old professor is played by the late Richard Vernon (Slartibartfast in the radio and TV Hitch-Hiker's), the evil military man is Peter "Genial Harry Grout" Vaughan (also notable for Citizen Smith, Time Bandits and Brazil), the screaming lunatic is Kate's brother Paddy, and Nigel Kennedy did the violin solo. A real all-star production.

  • 3:22-3:29

Ever noticed that Hugh Laurie is part of this video?

  • @esu4Me Yes, but did you also see Dawn French?

  • It's a prescient song about what is now called the ADS System (Active Denial System).

    It's real.

    Look it up.

  • Very few people can write such captivating melodies.

  • Holy shit it's Dr house XD

  • @kazozaman1 Yup. One of Englands finest comedians/actors - Hugh Laurie. Never been a fan of House myself, but I adore the comedic work he's done with Sthephen Fry.

  • @MsSarjen I adored Hugh Laurie in Blackadder.Hilarious

  • One of the best pop videos of all time...

  • This song must have written by Kate Bush for the 'Chernobyl disaster' that happened 6 months before the release of this song (october 2006). This song and video symbolizes how dangerous are experiments contrary to nature...Hence the board 'prohibited' at the end of the video like Chrnobyl became a prohibited area (:

  • @Vasarnikos I also found this at : gaffa.org/cloud/music/experiment_iv.html

  • @Vasarnikos the song and narrative of the video fully explain what is going on...it's about a military experiment to create a weapon using sound that will kill people...nothing at all to do with the Chernobyl disaster whatsoever...I don't normally post to correct people but you are so off the mark I felt a need to do it...

  • @seventytwonames I was talking about a real historical fact that was 'possibly' a motive 4 Kate at the period she wrote the song.As 4 the video she directed I used the word symbolize (the behind meanings which u don't seem 2 b familiar with I'm afraid!).And when u talk 'bout artist motives u can never b 2 sure because all artists don't want 2 discuss much about the exact reasons 4making a piece of art...It is/could be useless or even (worse) harmless 2 do so-just like your correct observations:P

  • @Vasarnikos There's no need to be afraid, I am familiar with the concept of symbolism. I'm also familiar with the concept of someone who through their own pomposity writes a load of nonsense about a video in order to try to elevate themselves by pertaining to see something that nobody else can. You can speculate about anything but most rational, normal people deal in facts, and the clear fact is Kate Bush wrote the song about sonic weapons.

  • @seventytwonames You just prove your sad shallowness here with your comments...It's nothing but normal 2 see things in your own way and not try to make people see only the one (clear) way. This is called fascism so you better correct other people like your partner who undoubtly must have full freedom of choise and opposition living with ya! (:

  • @Vasarnikos Chernobyl might have been some inspiration - not sure. But I've also heard that the song was inspired by some mad old military theories (not sure which military) about the use of sound as a deadly weapon in war. As she says in the song "all they wanted was a sound that could kill someone from the distance". Apparently they decided the most terrible sound was the scream of mothers who's told about the death of their children.

  • @MsSarjen wait a mo.. an actual sound can kill you? thats kinda terrifying..

  • @houndsofroses That was the theory - a rather stupid theory, but still. Don't say that I agree with it, but apparently someone worked on it.

  • Amazing music video, one of Kate Bush's best. And thank you all for your commentary and fun facts!I spotted Dawn French(whom I love!)in this film, but Hugh Laurie and Gary Oldman??DID not know that!!!:)

  • @flowers321 who of them is Gary Oldman? Did not recognise him.

  • Somehow this reminds me of "Real Science" starring Val Kilmer.

  • @CR4TES Real Genius. The first time I heard this song (never saw vid), that was what came to my mind as well.

  • Kate Bush is a GENIUS

  • Gee thanks Kate for this inspiring, fun, get-up-and-dance foot-tapper... hum along to that catchy melody... really perked me up.

And what a great wedding dance it would be, eh?

  • and Dawn French is the blonde woman........ loads of famous people in Kate Bush videos - she is amazing, pure talent!

  • Yep, that is Gary Oldman and the scientist who passes out near the phone is Hugh Laurie from the TV show House (he is actually British). She liked to use bona fide actors in her videos- Miranda Richardson, Donald Sutherland...

  • theres a film here somewhere/?? is that why house is such a bastard

  • Isn't it the bloke who plays Sirious Black in the experiment chair?

  • @Rachelehartley

no, it's Del Palmer, Bushes boyfriend at the time.

  • amazing acting from huge laurie made the video so much scarier, with that fear. Was this made before black adder or after?

  • Music that can kill someone commissioned by the military: that's where Mariah Carey started!

  • @kentonlarsen lmao! My dad hates Mariah Carey too XD.

  • its creepy this video, and the lyrics, the fact that music can actually kill you (shivers)

  • @klarjannah hugh laurie is the young scientist. the one that dies at the phone.

  • Hugh Laurie before House! Cool!

  • @andremdesouza OMG, where?

  • @andremdesouza Way before, this video is from about 1986 or so ;-)

  • was soo scary!! xD

  • Comment removed

  • and omg House is in this as well

  • is that really Dawn French?

  • @CompulsiveGambler - Yep, Dawn French and Hugh Laurie.

  • Great video, what insight!

  • This Bush is more interesting and intelligent and more powerfull then George ever was haha;-)

  • this video is worthy mainly because of kate's face in the very end of it. what a beauty

  • `Hugh Laurie *_*

  • Notice how the box looks like the old black Xbox and the newer XBox 360 Elites?

  • I loves me some bush

  • I remember watching a collection on Kate Bush's videos when I was younger with my Dad (I'm 18) and to this day, I'm not even joking, this video still manages to scare the poo out of me. haha. Good song though! :)

  • @xxrainbowsxx Agree. It scares the living daylight out of me. I recently watched the mini-series "Steven Kings The Stand", and the opening of it reminded me of this video and brought back memories of me sitting alone in the couch after school tormenting myself with this scary/beutiful thing.

  • @xxrainbowsxx Haha, I know. I used to scare my friends with this.

  • Dawn French AND Hugh Laurie in a KATE BUSH VIDEO! and this was before they were big (No pun on Dawn French intended)

  • @Yetaxa Im sure she would be the first to agree, that she is a much bigger star than b4 :)

  • Such a wonderful video. It actually tells the story of the song (and Kate Bush has had a lot of songs that actullay have stories). It looks like it could almost have been a Doctor Who episode.

  • Fantastic Kate, music of the 80 years is something learnable for our children with the electronic music....Greets from Belgium!

  • According to The Men that Stare at Goats, the US military was experimenting with "silent sound" around this time period, and Ayn Rand in Atlas Shrugged, published in 1957, described such a thing as Project X.

  • And also Tip for better sound down load the mp3 ok put the video into Windowns Movie Maker than remove the sound and put the mp3 over it lols

  • They are all British Actors and Actress arnt they that is Dawn French isint it

  • @EmoDeathStar121

    And Hugh Laurie

    Hooray~

  • Kate was well ahead of the game with this track.

    It's happening for real, folks.

I urge you to do some research into The High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program (HAARP).

    Be prepared to be frightened.....

  • awh, hugh laurie(:

  • It is Dawn French as the Blonde assistant. Also Hugh Laurie (Dr. House) as the male assistant , who ends up as the screaming guy at:3:28.

  • @JWUrsus He,sthere in the very beginning of the video;-)

  • Is that Dawn French in blonde?

  • I hadn't understand this story... (I'm french)... But, Kate Bush is a great woman ;) !

  • The song tells a story about a secret military plan to create a sound that is horrific enough to kill people. The ending of the story is unclear, but in the music video nearly every person working on the project is killed by the horrific sound, which is personified by Kate herself as she changed from an angelic woman into a grotesque monster.

  • Comment removed

  • This is storytelling Kate. Like "Cloudbusting" and "There Goes a Tenner" etc., Kate is singing a short story. Nobody else does it like her. We are just mere mortals.

  • If i wasn't hearing the music,i would have taught this is music video for Slayer's Angel of Death xD.Seriously, great song, video, they just don't make music like this anymore.Today it is just SELL SELL SELL...

  • Haha! Hugh Laurie at 0:47.

  • and dawn french!!

  • it's about electromagnetic mk ultra experiments conducted in the psychiatric hospitals

  • its about the montauk project in specific. when a machine went nuts and allowed protoplasmic objects created by sheer will to run amok!

  • great video- song on its own isnt the best kate. but still bloody good!

  • What is the point of a Kate Bush video with almost no Kate?

  • @LTF haha, get your point but still good video ;-)

  • That,s what we call"an early Hugh Laury"if I remeber well this is from 1986, around that time ;-)

  • What a great woman!

I want her to play write the OST 4 Sitgirl

  • She's a genius!

  • A sound that can kill someone!! It reminds me of the weirding modules in the 1984 movie "Dune"

  • this is a total masterpiece. astounding stuff. Love how she tells stories through her music

  • What the heck is pulling dawn french and Richard Vernon down the hallway?

  • And that's Kate's brother in the straightjacket.

  • I love this video. A somewhat cooler and less cheesy version of the mini-series of Stephen Kings The Stand.

  • Dawn French gets about.

  • @Aueneye

    Hugh Laurie?

    Okay - I saw him!

    But where was Dawn French?

  • The large nurse with the short blonde hair that assists the professor.

  • @rolchan the blond lady

  • Hugh Laurie is the doctor that gets killed in the hallway.

  • holy shit it is as well....thought he looked familiar
