I don't think there's a problem with Idina but more her interpretation of the character. Sherie Rene Scott gave her more depth and made her seem less shallow.

I read the book and the score merci. Despite directions, she still has an intonation that I find annoying and she is sharp. Also she should have pleased the director by finding a happy medium between his direction and something that gave the part more depth despite the book.

Besides, she didn't come up with all that annoying attitude, mostly the directors have to approve of that attitude for the character. You obviously know nothing of musicals and its backstage work. To be honest... Idina has more of the voice for this Role than Sherie does... Not that I don't absolutely love Sherie in shows like The Last Five Years and Dirty Rotten... Sherie just has more of a mixy tone... Idina has a full out belt. Its beautiful.

I love this so much! Idina is just fierce and fabulous in this role! She really knows how to contrast every character she plays. You see so much raw energy and power in Maureen. So much inner emotion in Elphaba. And here you see this shallow girly side to a great character. A fabulous actress. I admire her so much!

I agree though. I saw Idina in both Wicked and Rent and thought she was fantastic and this is just NOT the role for her.... I agree that she is off pitch and bored is definitely the word for her performance. I just get the feeling she doesn't care what happens at all. Of course this definitely could just be an off performance, but especially in the beginning it sounded very mediocre. She definitely got better towards the end when she could utilize the choreography though.
