It was all a precaution. They can't possibly know what this guy's story is. @alyr315 You approach any suspect with caution and in this case where the suspect is ID'd as ARMED AND DANGEROUS you have to take steps to keep yourself and your fellow officers safe. Criminals cross through checkpoints daily transporting weapons for cartel operations and a suspect who feels backed into a corner may just decide to use one. It is highly possible someone may attack a checkpoint in an act of terrorism. You have to think outside the box and consider the what-ifs.
