This is an amazing piece of video. Almost surreal. Germans cheering and showing affection toward an American. Wonder if these German kids we see here, as well as their children, are now among the ones who show up everywhere you look on YOUTUBE hurling insults at American patriotic songs and historical film clips? broadcast was time-delayed for unexpected 'dangerous' political comments from Bruce. So they cut off the "..one day no barriers should separate us anymore.." message. 2.5 hours spirit of freedom, then back to day to day life in repression. East-German band Sandow made a satire song about this oddity called "Born in the GDR" - 'I saw 160.000 people, they sang so lovely' - song was promptly banned. "Born in the USA" was allowed to listen. How bizzar? But it was great gesture to sing there for us!

This song is IRONIC, people! It's not a R&R version of the Pledge of fucking Allegiance. Find the lyrics and read them, if you can.

But, that said, at the time, it was an incredible thing to do in the DDR and it doesn't matter if the East Germans understood the subtext or not.

@vsftin in june 1988 , i saw bruce in the RDS dublin, with breda . the following october i went to germany .too work in the forestry. had the best days of my life in germany . am 50 now, this vedio brings back great memories, thank you german people. tim

Not really. If you listen to the lyrics, it's an Anti-American song about the lost Vietnam war and the failure of the US-American civil society. It's NOT a "freedom song" or "patriotic anthem". US-Americans have a blind spot in the eye. They misunderstood "YMCA" as well (a pro-homosexual song but cheerfully sung by All-American cheerleaders and young Republicans LOL). Or think of the Anti-American film "TEAM America World Police", they think it was patriotic. OMG
