How have tried???? By getting Bush Elected or McCain....how have either of them helped???? Joining the military is a choice, no one forces someone to join the military....serving your country....now that is a funny statement....it is really serving Your Gov't and whatever war they have going on at the time....I don't believe in war...just like I don't believe beating your wife (like I'm sure you do) will make your homelife better. Senator Waxman tried to pass legislation to the effect that companies overcharging above 100 million dollars would not be allowed new defense-related contracts. McCain voted against it. Obama voted (as in several similar instances) to curb this form of abuse and treason. Tell us about hanging with terrorism or wealth distribution.

The police officer's mistake was violating the Hatch Act, which prohibits government (federal and state) officials from using their government position for politcal influence. If he had been dressed in his personal clothes (not a police uniform) and made the statements just a "Joe Blow" the regular citizen (not as the Chief of Police), there probably would not have been a problem.
