Several years ago, on the liner notes of one of her CD's, Yolanda finally gave mention of 2 outstanding Texas sopranos that were inspiring to her. They are Sarah Jordon Powell and Betty Ransom Nelson. If you hear them them sing so powerfully you'll hear the elements in their voices that Yolanda has emulated.
Betty's "style" has become her own through the years. As I remember hearing her sing for the first time( playing piano, wearing a pill box hat) at a Convocation midnight musical at Pentecostal Temple COGIC(Memphis, TN) , I dubbed her "Gospel Aretha" (as in Franklin). Seriously way back then (late 60's/early 70's) with closed eyes , you couldn't tell the difference!
FAW is the Frank Anton White Celebration Choir of New York. Bettina Pennon leads this on one of their CDs. Check out Bettina singing a hymn on YouTube! I love Betty Nelson!
