There's clearly a slight difference, but there's no technical reason for the physical unit to sound better - although it seems to be that way. Even if the analog filter has different behavior, should be possible to program the VST's filter to emulate - but the settings might be slightly different. @Oldworldman - do you just use analog low-pass, or is there any resonance in the mix as well?
To put it in my own words, it would go be described that the emulation sound is like well simulated bubble movement, whereas the original sound is the bubbles with some aftermath rapture.
Well, I have the real hardware and the software and really all you do with the software synths is just run it through an analog filter to warm it up. The real PPG would sound just like the softsynth if it were not for its analog filters. You know? I use the software synths as a tool to make more patches on the real hardware. Then I just layer the two and get the best of both worlds!
vst interface is really ugly... i personally don't feel like playing it. For a +200$ softsynth i'd expect something more sexy; not 100% funny to play an emulation, 200% less funny if it's ugly.
They emulate the sound, why not try to emulate the shapes? =)
Maybe not what you like to hear, but the real one (hardware) sounds a lot better and more interesting. The simulation sounds rather flat and boring. There are some random effects in the original sound that is lacking in the simulated one.
@MacXpert74 I can barely hear any difference if any its so close. I couldn't even tell which one sounds better. Now the original is going to set you back a few thousand plus maintenance and space requirements. The software costs a fraction, integrates within a DAW, takes up no physical space, sounds amazing and you can run more than one at a time as a vsti. Do you honestly think the original is better than that?
@maccagrabme Oh, I totally agree that these plug-ins have their purpose. From a economic and ease of use point of view they completely make sense. My comments where purely based on the sound alone. I for myself can hear the difference. And it's not difficult to tell which one sounds better, because the original is always the best by default (because it's the original ;) And despite the money and other issues, there is just something very cool about playing a real machine, that can't be emulated.
@MacXpert74 I still have the the real PPG. Best decision ever not to invest in Waveterm! Crashed every time you looked at it lol! My wife actually said that PPG stood for 'Pretty Poor Gamble'. Love the sound - gratetful for the emulation - sounds like the hardware when treated correctly. Real keyboard was AWFUL. Ended up like a roller coaster. Software more versatile, reliable & sounds like a PPG. On this vid I suspect the h/ware is recorded louder which makes u think 'better'.
if you put 2 sameday manufactured identical vintage synths together , due to degradation of circuits and components they never sound alike

whats the difference between the waldorf 3.v and the other free ppg vst? what has the better sound quality compared to the hardware?

Can you do some more 3.V Vs 2,3 examples please?

@MacXpert74
"I for myself can hear the difference"
I am thoroughly convinced it's mostly psychological. You BELIEVE it to sound better, so for you it simply DOES. It's just how the mind works.
