We had the BIG one last night which treated us in South western part of Holland with 3 Mesoscale Convective Systems in a row, each followup more intense with approx. 1000 discharges a minute! Seems to be the most severe system that entered Holland in 25 years. Just check here on YT. Footages already posted.
The sound of the last thunderstorm coming in seemed like a heavy Roman army coming our way due to this heavy dischargecount . I never felt as anxious as I did last night!
That crackling noise says its a close one and boy was it. That would have had me running under the stairs or the table. I love lightning but it still scares the crap out of me though. Very, very rarely do we get anything like that in the UK. It has to get extremely hot first and then any storms we do get don't last that long and are over with quite quickly.
Just so you know that close bolt that looked like was right in front of you is actually an optical affect created by the beginning of the more distant strike. Lightning occurs so quickly modern video cameras are unable to decipher distance quickly enough. I am a photographer for the National Weather Service and this happens very often. We have some new high speed video cameras that solve this problem but they are $3,000 or more.
And this is what I love about Bangor! I've been there many times and have been caught in a few real whoppers. You just don't get lightning like here in California. Wow!
Wow that is amazing! Great lightning bolts. I love thunderstorms :)
5 stars on the video!
