My grandfather was dog warden here from 1950 to 1970. My mom just watched this and read all 43 comments and we just had an hour long discussion about it. She agrees this is inhumane and totally unnecessary. She witnessed everything that went on back then when she was a little girl. Back in the early 50's there was a tube coming out of a room they put over the exhaust of a running car and the carbon monoxide killed them. Then they would take the dead dogs in a wheelbarrow and put them in a shed.
Every two weeks a truck would come and pick up the bodies and take them off to make compost. After a few years they quit gassing them and Dr. Rinebarger (sp) (vet) would come every 72 hours (you had 72 hours to pick up your lost dog or buy one) and he would give them lethal injection in their kennel. My mom said the only time they used the catch pole is if a dog was vicious and he feared getting bitten. My mom said by the time the vet pulled the needle out, the dog was dead.
Back then they changed from gassing to lethal injection cause in was more humane and cheaper. My mom had no idea that this was going on now, and she's perplexed about it. She said she wants to go there and talk to them about this the first of the week and see if she can do something about it.
I have a couple of points to make here, so please bear with me.
First, the I hate the fact that Licking County has a kill shelter. I go several times a year and torture myself by looking into the eyes of dogs and cats, knowing that I can not possibly afford to take in any more.
Second, the only thing I see the man in the video doing wrong is dragging the body of the dog face down, and disrespecting the dog. Otherwise, HE IS DOING HIS JOB, PEOPLE. (cont. on next comment......)
Lastly, if you are so fired up concerned about these poor animals, GO ADOPT ONE OR MORE!! If you can't afford to adopt, GO VOLUNTEER!! Take them for a walk (a REAL one, not "the Last One.") I, myself, have adopted FOUR dogs, TWO cats, and TWO ferrets.
Which is why, currentlly, I can't get any more. I just don't have enough room. Someday, hopefully, I will be able to get another. But, until then, I will just go and visit. Yes, it breaks my heart.

Has the Dog Warden made any comment on this video? I read the Beacon article and it brought me to this video. As a taxpayer in this County I would like to see this man make a statement to his bosses boss. That would be me and every other taxpayer not the commissioners. I feel he not only deserves to speak for himself but actually owes us a public explanation of performing these acts in front of our school bus age children.
The problem is a lack of commitment and responsibility on the part of the owners that is evidenced by: lack of spaying and neutuering, lack of training resulting in pesky dogs, people get tired, etc. Only a small % is due to the economy. A friend and I just rescued 7 from the shelter who were on the short list. None were spayed or neutered and didn't appear to have any leash or basic training. The owners did not invest the time and then didn't like the results so the dogs pay the price.
Exactly, why blame this one guy when the responsibility falls on every single person who has thrown out a dog, and not spayed or neutered their dogs. This is not overpopulation; these were all adult dogs killed. These dogs HAD a home! What happened? Economy downturn has forced many to give up their pets. Would it be nice if HSUS had a fund to help these people get through these hard times? Donate food, vet services? Why aren't they helping? Other adult dogs are turned in due to illness, age, behavioral issues, etc. Breeders are NOT the problem; stop the breeder bashing and get that pound to work harder at placing pets!
I have adopted a beautiful German Shepherd from this shelter, who would have had the same fate, thru no fault of his own. He was turned into this shelter by a hospice worker, his owner had died of cancer. All I can say is DO NOT buy from breeders, ever, and ADOPT all your dogs from shelters, especially ones that kill inhumanely. So you know, dog transports travel all over the USA, so any dog anywhere can be your dog, just make the connections. We are in Wisconsin, this WOULD have been his fate!

I hate gas chambers and do feel that the dogs and their bodies could have been treated more respectfully. However, it is not the shelter workers who put the dogs there. It is the irresponsible owners and those who sold the dogs to them. Public education may help alleviate some of this, but really some people need a good swift kick !!!
