There are many governments that try to cencor internet-use. The thing is, that people are very creative in finding ways around it, and often succeed. What is best? China with a censored Google, or China with no Google at all?
A gov't that must censor it's flow of information to the people is a weak government indeed. That Google (and others) are willing to allow themselves to be censored puzzles me...well, not true. It's about the bottom line. China is an odd bird on the world stage.
Is the American government weak, then? I don't think so - but they censor like hell (which is not easy to realise if you live in the US and have no access to foreign media). Most governments do, by the way, the only difference is that some are better than others at concealing this fact from the populace.
Hi Peter. Yes, I had heard that Google was censored in China several months back. I have a friend who just moved to China to work, and he told me the same thing. Remember, freedom of information and the press is STILL not tolerated there in spite of all the advances the West has made. Ask anyone under 30 there about Tiananmen Square in 1989, and they are coompletely puzzled! I saw that this summer on a TV documentary.

Well said Peter, we are currently seeing ads here in Australia regarding NOT signing up for pay TV. When I have visited friends with Austar or Foxtel I cant see what they are paying for, it seems to be you have the same problem with your "Sky" television in Uk.It is a worry what will happen now Google have YouTube and maybe this Chinese station is a hope for us all..!

Saw a good discussion on PBS news about how Google must monetize YouTube. Adds will have to come. Also they mentioned that since google has more money to go after, more chances to get sued by copyright infringements for stuff that gets posted. Ads are most likely going to be in the YouTube future. It sucks.

As for google buying youtube, I guess it was inevitable but I think it's a shame. Once the "suits" take over, I think youtube will lose some of it's inventivness and freshness. However, as long as you're still making your videos, I'll keep coming back.
Actually, its not like Google is a huge conglamorate. One thing thats kind of putting my mind at ease is that Google is a free service so hopefully YouTube will remain a free service as well.
Peter, there's a channel here in the States on the DirecTV satellite service called "Current." A substantial portion of the content is viewer-submitted, and they are hooked up with Yahoo. If you want more info: currenttv.com. But I agree with rdwo - YouTube is great since it's on-demand.
Google is generally a user-friendly and user-concerned company. As far as I know, Google's only major faux pas was allowing China to call the shots as far as censoring Chinese citizen's access to the outside world. They appear to have realized the folly of that but is that just lip service? I hope not. I hope that Google HAS learned by this.
With that one albeit major concern, I am confident that the association between Google and YouTube can only be good for us. As for Google video... I used it to begin with but uploading took forever and vidoe would often sit for days (even, in one case, for nearly two weeks!!!) waiting to be approved.
i agree but do you think that one channel could play hundreds of thousands of videos "on demand" plus you can get it on the internet FREE!!! this idea won't last long its just a fad in my eyes!

The founders of YouTube will no longer have control and eventually they will probably move on to something new. They are entrepeneurs and very successful ones at least from a financial standpoint. Of course it did not hurt to have over US$10 million in venture capital backing for YouTube.
Peter, the problem with TV is that it is normally not "ON DEMAND."
Let's remember that the Founders of YouTube came from Paypal which was sold to eBay and is quite a mess now. Even though YouTube is supposed to stay somewhat autonomous, there will be major changes to boost the value to the detriment of the community. Once upon a time the eBay community had high hopes too but look at it now.

Btw... i wanted to say.. I may become an outcast amoung all youth, but I agree with you about sky tv. We got digital tv and went from 5 channels (which were all crap) to 900.. we've got 895 new Channels Of New Crap and not one thing on the new or old channels is worth watching. Not one.

Saw a good discussion on PBS news about how Google must monetize YouTube. Adds will have to come. Also they mentioned that since google has more money to go after, more chances to get sued by copyright infringements for stuff that gets posted. Ads are most likely going to be in the YouTube future. It sucks.

this site spends 2 million a month on bandwidth. Google is the loser in this transaction. Also the creators of Youtube were already millionaires ( VPs from Ebay/Paypal )

As for google buying youtube, I guess it was inevitable but I think it's a shame. Once the "suits" take over, I think youtube will lose some of it's inventivness and freshness. However, as long as you're still making your videos, I'll keep coming back.

Peter, there's a channel here in the States on the DirecTV satellite service called "Current." A substantial portion of the content is viewer-submitted, and they are hooked up with Yahoo. If you want more info: currenttv.com. But I agree with rdwo - YouTube is great since it's on-demand.

Google is generally a user-friendly and user-concerned company. As far as I know, Google's only major faux pas was allowing China to call the shots as far as censoring Chinese citizen's access to the outside world. They appear to have realized the folly of that but is that just lip service? I hope not. I hope that Google HAS learned by this.

With that one albeit major concern, I am confident that the association between Google and YouTube can only be good for us. As for Google video... I used it to begin with but uploading took forever and vidoe would often sit for days (even, in one case, for nearly two weeks!!!) waiting to be approved.

i agree but do you think that one channel could play hundreds of thousands of videos "on demand" plus you can get it on the internet FREE!!! this idea won't last long its just a fad in my eyes!

The founders of YouTube will no longer have control and eventually they will probably move on to something new. They are entrepeneurs and very successful ones at least from a financial standpoint. Of course it did not hurt to have over US$10 million in venture capital backing for YouTube.

Peter, the problem with TV is that it is normally not "ON DEMAND."
Let's remember that the Founders of YouTube came from Paypal which was sold to eBay and is quite a mess now. Even though YouTube is supposed to stay somewhat autonomous, there will be major changes to boost the value to the detriment of the community. Once upon a time the eBay community had high hopes too but look at it now.
