Thirdly, Subaru withdrew from the WRC due to the rule changes and the fact that their boxer engines have now been singled out in the WRC (*sarcastically* Thank you FIA). Why? Because all cars to compete under the new rules must use an inline, transverse mounted engine which has to be the same as its production model. And with Subaru saying no changing their engine/drivetrain layout and dump alot of money into R&D, their best alternative was to drop out. You can still see them in IRC and PWRC.

Secondly, please note that Subaru's main reason for retiring from the WRC wasn't because they were getting no where in the season. If that was the case, they would've retired every since. Subaru and Suzuki pulled out of the WRC due to financial constraints because of the economy and keeping their cars running in the WRC would've only put a hurt on their pockets.

Not a single win in their last 3 seasons and no title in 5 consecutive years despite running the sport's highest budget is exactly "getting nowhere", in particular the Subaru S14 WRC pictured in this video never scored a victory in the world championship.
