....once upon a time it was the final prog on BBC2. Remember the swans sailing by on a lake?? Now of course its on at 12.45 every night on BBC Radio4

  • Sailing by is such a lovely tune

  • ah, the shipping forcast on radio 4 back in the early 80's! when i was a boy....lol

  • after a serious operation this music kept me going, looking forward each day to hear it knowing i had reached another days end, giving me hope through the pain for a night for another day to come

  • This beautiful music so inspired me that i added lyrics ,made a recording of it and posted it on You Tube.(search Bernard sailing).cheers

  • I haerd this first with my Mum and Dad in the late 60's early 70's when it was the background music to a feature program on I think the BBC on a Hot Air Balloon race over England.

  • My dad and I do a sequence dance to this music, bit I get mixed up sometimes as to whether it is Waltz Katerine or The Crystal Waltz. Please can anyone help?

  • recalling my studying abroad in UK,i always recall ed this music played by bbc4 at night. never forget the most peaceful music

  • The next bit sounds a bit like the Waltons!

  • Reminds me of my seagoing days

  • "Sailing by " one of the most beautiful short pieces of music I have ever heard !

  • I love listening to this!

  • This is played almost every night just before the shipping forecast on BBC Radio 4. A most excellent piece of music.

  • I want this played at my funeral ^_^

  • just said the same thing today ! So many nights I have drifted in and out of sleep listening to this beautiful piece of music !

  • @RobotwarsKing Strange how at the age of 8 my father told me the same thing, and I was just thinking about it before I read your comment.

  • Sailing By is on Mozart Edition CD MECD1001.

  • ah sailing by. not quite the same without the uk theme at the other end of the world service shift. still a nice tune though

  • And now the Shipping Forecast issued by the Met Office on behalf of the Maritime and Coastuard Agency at 0505/1130/1725/0015 on [Insert Date].

  • This track is the original still used by radio 4 although they do have another recording in use not as good in my opinion. This track has now been released by edition ukwho own the copyright on numerous cds

  • This certainly sounds like the Radio 4 original verison of 'Sailing By', I never knew it had been used for TV at one time. If you add..&fmt=18 to the URL you can hear it in stereo. This is a gem!

  • how does anyone know this info?

"was also the title track of this CEEFAX AM tape which wa sin service between March 1983 and the summer of 1984 on BBC1"

and more over - who has it taped n saved?

  • There are people who've done all that, and tried to preserve and keep records of this kind of music, because the BBC hasn't!

  • hi, do you know the artist's name who performs "Sailing by" and if it can be purchased?

    thank you :o)

  • Yes you can actually buy this - I got my copy of composer Ronald Binge's music if you order through HMV or WHSmith if you are very lucky!!!!

  • thank you so much for the info, my mother will be a happy lady this xmas :o)

    thank you :o)

  • Hi, thanks for posting this, I've always loved this track! Do you know if the published recording is the same as the BBC recording? Cheers! :)

  • I have an mp3 of Sailing By identical to this thanks to meldrum PP, and it's definitely the BBC recording, having listened to the Shipping Forecast on a few sleepless nights near to exams or similar.

  • What is meldrum PP? I would like to get this mp3 version. Know what you mean about the sleepless nights!!! Hope you did well in the exams!
