@hjf11393 first, if you are calling Celbrity Skin holes best album, you are a silly goose. that is the only record corgan ever assisted in song writing, and cobain had nothing to do with that record because he had been dead for 4 years. if you are refering to Live Through This, corgan had nothing to do with the record, except for a song that was written ABOUT him, and cobain only played guitar on ONE song on that album. just sayin'
Gish is such an amazing album. they should reissue it and restore it's sound for future generations. it's a classic. when i was a kid, i was slow on the music scene, the first record i ever bought and listened to seriously from beginning to end was Siamese Dream. It took me to another place. it was magical. this was before i really ever heard the beatles or the rolling stones or led zeppelin or heck nirvana. one of the best times of my life was siamese dream and this record as well.
May I just name the bands that really matter from the 90's: The smashing pumpkins, Nirvana, Hole, Pearl Jam, Alice in chains, Nine Inch Nails, Weezer, and Soundgarden! Best bands ever! And to think that I'm just a kid.
when did james stop smiling? what the hell happened to him? whenever i see him in the later years interviews i always wonder. maybe D'Arcy was his true love? and he seems to love the crow iconography. The Smashing Pumpkins absolutely epitomize this era of rock music, and in a way I think the band was doomed in the way that the Beatles and Led Zeppelin and Metallica were doomed to suffer death and breakup.
i noticed that in most interviews, Jimmy is always the shy one. He doesn't talk much lol Maybe it's because Billy's way with words<33 He says everything needed to be said. *sigh. I'd marry him. I totally would.
Bullshit. I totally fell in love with Gish on the first listen, I felt like I was on a fucking rollercoaster lying in bed hearing it with headphones on for the first time. Mindblowing.
Shamen for that? One thing makes me admire Corgan is his tightness and honesty writing songs like talking for medias. Once Rolling Stone Mag asked him for his favorite band actually and he didn´t name a band from his lable neither his country. He noticed an independent band called SWAVE, giving very good comments about their song "In the future" and saying what´s funny, the animated singer from this band has his same face! ha ha ha ha ha
Really, for me I've never liked a Pumpkins album the first few times I've listened to it, especially Adore (and I have all of thier albums). But they've all b/c my favorite albums.
Same here, if it wasn't for the fact that i forced Gish down my throat (i just left it on loop without bothering to turn it off, then it just grew on me), Smashing Pumpkins wouldn't be my favorite band of all time, they also left me more open to new music
thats the fundemental difference between their first 3 albums and the ones since "new band and old" is billys happy rich rockstar life. it makes no difference that darcy and james arent in the band from the songwriting side of things cause apart from gish billy wrote and recorded all the giutar and bass parts on pumpkins records with jimmy on drums without any contribution from james and darcy except adore when billy worked with a drum machine. but the band just aint the same without them!!
You have no idea how wrong you are... go learn more than the bullshit they have on Wikipedia, and actually go on their website. Billy doesn't give a flying fuck about the money or about the past, really, sure, he never said anything bad about James or D'Arcy, but, they ALL worked on Gish, and Matt Walker did the drum parts on Adore. The band now, they ARE the Smashing Pumpkins, because they can play the music with passion and realism... go read an SP article, and you'll see.
man u need 2 check their website, billy called darcy a bitter nasty drug addict, and that he ended the band because he couldnt stand james iha's attitude! he asked them both 2 rejoin the band 1st and when they refused he got jeff and ginger instead. I said they all worked on gish, as 4 adore matt walker only drums on 7 tracks, joey waronker did 3 matt cameron did 1 and billy used a drum machine on 5 tracks.
Umm... In case you missed the second sentence of my comment, "Go to their website", meaning I have been there, and signed up. And yes, I know about the "mean-spirited drug addict" comment, and about James' attitude, which was almost right after the band was broke up. SO HE WAS ANGRY! duh. I'm actually surprised that you know the other drummers on Adore, I'll give you props for that, and, and this is just a personal thing, but everyone leaves out Lisa.... why?? But, I'm sorry for ragging on you.
yeah im signed up on the website myself, i think people forget lisa cause well would it really matter if she was'nt there? im a huge pumpkins fan since i was 11 and i like the old and new band. jimmy is an insanely gud drummer who gets better on every record, my point on billy was just now thats he's a happier and content person his focus to making music has becoming almost entirely aimed at the writing and arrangment of the guitar parts with lyrics as almost an after thought.
billy still has great passion for making music and moving forward, but the new work by him and jimmy its clear to see that he doesnt write lyrics with the same sentiment and fire he had on early records and thats understandable, that doesnt mean the new work is bad, i thought zeitgeist was a great record but these songs will not capture the hearts of people like before. the new band only play new songs with passion and realism as billy has already stated he has no interest in playing old songs.
i think billy continues to become an even more accomplished musician all the time but with the huge success of the pumpkins he got so rich and famous he doesnt have the heartfelt lyrics anymore in him! we need billy broke and depressed!!!
i idolize both bands for diffrent reasons....the pumpkins for there atmosphere...i can put the album on in my room and never want to leave the pumpkins are almost a way of thinking...if i can say so without sounding like a stoner lol
And i admire MCR for there loyalty and there drive to save peoples lives they give it there all....two great bands and i hope to make one that does both of them one better
I kind of favor the pumpkins and so does MCR but I favor the pumpkins older stuff thow I like Zeitgeist but i prefer albums like simease Dream almost all the songs were good today and cherub rock are just a couple on there I remember how excited I was when I played guitar Hero 3 and cherub rock was on there now theres a bunch of hours I've played on a game
I don't really consider Zeitgeist as a Pumpkins' album. It's still Billy and it's still genius, but it's just not the same. It sounds different and the lyrics aren't really the same either.
darcy and james had very little 2 do with gish and nothing to do with any other pumpkins album, so other than the persona and image of the band its really not very different. only thing for me is billys voice got a little better technically throughout the years but lost a bit of its rawness.
that's BS. even Billy said that's not true. james co-wrote two songs on Gish. and two on Siamese Dream. james actually wrote the music to SP's best song 'mayonaise'. yes, he wrote all the music. and MCIS was a complete band effort. go watch the 666 video, you'll see the band in the studio working as a whole unit. everybody doing their part.
I agree, scott172. D'Arcy and James' absence has less to do with what's lacking in the Pumpkins' music today than Billy's own vocals (and songwriting, but that's a different story). In terms of technique, he's a better singer now than he was before, but part of what made the Pumpkins so unique was his voice and the rawness and emotion he put into his singing. He's lost that by trying to sing with more precision.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
The whole band had their influences on the creation of the albums they released. Billy had the most but nevertheless the Smashing Pumpkins are Billy, James, Jimmy and Darcy. Not what they have now 2 members and 2 replacements. And the reason the music sounds different is because it is Billy isn't trying to go for the Siamese Dream or Mellon Collie or even Machina hes trying to give them a new sound with the new music. Even if he says he isn't. But the Pumpkins probably never will what they were.
That's what I'm saying: the music sounds different because Billy is making it so, not because James and D'arcy aren't there. Besides, D'arcy has been absent since the production of Machina, at which point she'd been replaced by Melissa Auf der Maur, who is arguably a better bass player anyway. As humans, we all tend to be biased towards originals; they're our "first loves," so to speak. (continued in next comment)
(continued from previous comment) But, in reality, it was all about image; James, the hip and androgynous Asian-American, was the token minority, and D'arcy, the cool and sarcastic woman, was the token female. As a young Asian-American woman myself, I appreciate that diversity, and that lineup is still a breath of fresh air in today's testosterone-dominated rock world, but I also understand that image had little to do with sound.
could say that Jimmy had nothing to do with the Adore since he was absent from the tour and most of the making of that album. Which to me signified the end for them.I just think that bands should keep the original members or not play because its the authenticity of having the original members because with replacements it seems phony and about money, though Billy says its not I believe him,you still get that feeling.I've seen the new band 3 times I it was theoriginals but that time has passed
Do you really think all bands must keep their original members? In that case, The Beatles would have no Ringo Starr and would instead have some other drummer and perhaps Stuart Sutcliffe and Pete Best. Nirvana wouldn't have Dave Grohl but would have original drummer Chad Channing. Would I call these bands un-"authentic"? Certainly not. And neither are the Pumpkins.
I do think bands should keep the original members. If you look at Nirvana they had at least 5 drummers between '88 and '90.There is a difference between finding the right members and replacing former members. And a lot of the first original members along with some you mentioned are not even credited for working on a record of the bands.I think if a band member is in the band for 15 or20 years they are there to stay and are part of the original cast so to say.Though some bands don't last that long
Image still has to do with the band because look at some bands would have never made it with out image, not the Pumpkins because they fucking rock, it does play some part in bands. And to say that Billy is the only reason behind the song writing of the Pumpkins, look at his solo project or Zwan I love both of those but they both failed so some where in the process all 4 members had to have something to the success of the music and the making of. But if you say Darcy had no influence either you
And we are a visual species; image, whether you like it or not, does play a role, no matter how credible the band may be. Imagine if the Pumpkins sounded exactly the same as we know them but were an all-female band, or were comprised of races other than white [and Asian]. Image doesn't necessarily detract from a band's credibility; it does, however, form a significant role in and of itself.
how about your a retard. they do care about their music as art. what the hell do you think zeitgeist was. i bet you listened to it once and thought "oh its not like siamese dream and mellon collie so its crap"
how can you say they dont care about their music. what the fuck do you know.
well, pumpkins obiviously :P, pink floyd, queens rych, staind, radio head, metallica, breaking benjamin, korn, ozzy, sabbeth, beatles, echo and the bunny men, beach boys, beegees, outkast, CCWR, depeche mode, the cure, mega death, dixie chicks, fly leaf, mudvayne, a whole lot stuff the list goes on and on...
damn , .. they were young . . i was grade 1 then . havnt hear of them yet . . wel wat do grade one know about music anyway . . but you cud tel in darcys statement tht shes alredy using drugs .. hehe
So cool to see them in the beginning of their career,so young, and hopeful for their band's future.Untainted by the crap music that was around then,as they are now.Completely doing their own thing. What's weird to me,is they got big when they were about my age now, makes me wonder where my life should be going and how lucky they are to have made it.
good point. you gotta just go watch a lot of up and coming bands play at small venues. most f them might be crap but if you go to enough shows you will find a few diamonds in the rough.
ps-next smashing pumpkins might be silversun pickups. check them out.
Ha, as good as the Silversun Pickups may be, there is no comparison to what the Pumpkins have done. Did you completely miss the point of Billy's anology? There is no "next Smashing Pumpkins," for one, because they're still around, and two because they both have completely separate driving forces. They may influence the Silversun Pickups, but they are not taking over a band's placehold in history.
Wow, rare. The luxury of Youtube. When I thought I seen and heard it all. The Gish era was The best Sp era. I like James' response to how Sp's music, at the time, was unique oppose to the other groups. It really was, everyone had their own sound. And D'arcy speaks. *Sigh* The Siva lyrics.
Man .. james iha got to bang d'arcy before she got old and fucked up. Lucky bastard!

That's cool, but he's also said he just thinks "Gish" is an okay album. He's obviously much prouder of SD and MCIS.
Really, sometimes I think Billy only likes his albums based on how well they sell.

Maybe the reason the albums sold so well is the reason Billy likes them so much, rather than because they sold well.

scott172 3 years ago 2
But the whole tone of the music and lyrics are completely different. Some similar riff and solo styles, but it feels really different to listen to.
Mattoxicator 3 years ago
I agree.
BleachedNirvana 3 years ago
that's BS. even Billy said that's not true. james co-wrote two songs on Gish. and two on Siamese Dream. james actually wrote the music to SP's best song 'mayonaise'. yes, he wrote all the music. and MCIS was a complete band effort. go watch the 666 video, you'll see the band in the studio working as a whole unit. everybody doing their part.
houseofglass21 3 years ago
I agree, scott172. D'Arcy and James' absence has less to do with what's lacking in the Pumpkins' music today than Billy's own vocals (and songwriting, but that's a different story). In terms of technique, he's a better singer now than he was before, but part of what made the Pumpkins so unique was his voice and the rawness and emotion he put into his singing. He's lost that by trying to sing with more precision.

But the Pumpkins probably never will what they were.
tomsaccount1 3 years ago
That's what I'm saying: the music sounds different because Billy is making it so, not because James and D'arcy aren't there. Besides, D'arcy has been absent since the production of Machina, at which point she'd been replaced by Melissa Auf der Maur, who is arguably a better bass player anyway. As humans, we all tend to be biased towards originals; they're our "first loves," so to speak. (continued in next comment)
rhapsodeeinblue 3 years ago 5
(continued from previous comment) But, in reality, it was all about image; James, the hip and androgynous Asian-American, was the token minority, and D'arcy, the cool and sarcastic woman, was the token female. As a young Asian-American woman myself, I appreciate that diversity, and that lineup is still a breath of fresh air in today's testosterone-dominated rock world, but I also understand that image had little to do with sound.
rhapsodeeinblue 3 years ago 3
could say that Jimmy had nothing to do with the Adore since he was absent from the tour and most of the making of that album. Which to me signified the end for them.I just think that bands should keep the original members or not play because its the authenticity of having the original members because with replacements it seems phony and about money, though Billy says its not I believe him,you still get that feeling.I've seen the new band 3 times I it was theoriginals but that time has passed
tomsaccount1 3 years ago
Do you really think all bands must keep their original members? In that case, The Beatles would have no Ringo Starr and would instead have some other drummer and perhaps Stuart Sutcliffe and Pete Best. Nirvana wouldn't have Dave Grohl but would have original drummer Chad Channing. Would I call these bands un-"authentic"? Certainly not. And neither are the Pumpkins.
rhapsodeeinblue 3 years ago 5
I do think bands should keep the original members. If you look at Nirvana they had at least 5 drummers between '88 and '90.There is a difference between finding the right members and replacing former members. And a lot of the first original members along with some you mentioned are not even credited for working on a record of the bands.I think if a band member is in the band for 15 or20 years they are there to stay and are part of the original cast so to say.Though some bands don't last that long
tomsaccount1 3 years ago
Image still has to do with the band because look at some bands would have never made it with out image, not the Pumpkins because they fucking rock, it does play some part in bands. And to say that Billy is the only reason behind the song writing of the Pumpkins, look at his solo project or Zwan I love both of those but they both failed so some where in the process all 4 members had to have something to the success of the music and the making of. But if you say Darcy had no influence either you
tomsaccount1 3 years ago
And we are a visual species; image, whether you like it or not, does play a role, no matter how credible the band may be. Imagine if the Pumpkins sounded exactly the same as we know them but were an all-female band, or were comprised of races other than white [and Asian]. Image doesn't necessarily detract from a band's credibility; it does, however, form a significant role in and of itself.

Hey! A Chili Peppers asterisk in the background. I would have died to see the Chili Peppers and Smashing Pumpkins in 1992.

The only way to do it is to check out local bands in your area. Somewhere out there is the next SP
everythirteendays 4 years ago
good point. you gotta just go watch a lot of up and coming bands play at small venues. most f them might be crap but if you go to enough shows you will find a few diamonds in the rough.
ps-next smashing pumpkins might be silversun pickups. check them out.
wdashton43 4 years ago
Ha, as good as the Silversun Pickups may be, there is no comparison to what the Pumpkins have done. Did you completely miss the point of Billy's anology? There is no "next Smashing Pumpkins," for one, because they're still around, and two because they both have completely separate driving forces. They may influence the Silversun Pickups, but they are not taking over a band's placehold in history.

hopelesserik13 4 years ago
ForgottenSoul700 4 years ago
I agree. I miss the old pumpkins. But......that new album (Zeitgeist) does rock. Hold on to their old stuff.
