@tommychaos3 I agree. When I first saw them sliding down the stairs from 1:29-1:38 I said to myself "ouch, that will hurt." (I guess the director for this movie put some soft padding that blended in on the stairs and told them to slide down on that soft padding).
@CatpurrRobertaBobbi Yes but Dickens novel draws him as pure evil, inferring his interest in the boys is MORE than in just their pickpocketing skills. Dickens understood well that child prostitution was rife in Victorian London, but couldn't be explicit about such dark issues.
@jimdivax Im reading the book at the minute, but ive only just got up to the bit where Dickens introduces Fagin...... I know its silly, but i keep expecting the characters in the book to burst out into song! :L
@jimdivax Personally I don't feel he is meant to be interpreted that way at all in the musical. He provides some comic relief to ease the stress induced by Bill Sikes. I think he also works in the musical as part of an interesting dynamic... you have Nancy, the tragic heroine who dies for her selflessness, Sikes, the misogynistic villain, and Fagin who's kind of the halfway point between her innocence and his depravity. Also the musical can't work if we don't like Fagin.
@allpossibleworlds In the musical they are toning him down.... it is a musical and aimed towards kids too. The original novel works for a proper film... where oliver is completely miserable, wants to kill himself (according to dickens) and the place is a hell hole.
@DLPBurke Yes, a musical is not really an artistic venue that lends itself to such grim realities. I am somewhat ashamed to admit I have not read the novel. I have tried a few times and could not remain invested. I love Dickens' writing style and admire his dedication to tackling disturbing social issues in his works, but before I was halfway through Oliver Twist I felt I was becoming desensitized to all the horrendous injustices piled on top of each other.
