People who listen only to mainstream music know Airplane for the two songs they hear most often on mainstream radio: White Rabbit and Somebody to Love. But this album is full of good songs, this being only one. Although I didn't grow up in the 60's (I was born in the 70's) I can feel the lifestyle that defined that decade through this kind of music. I hope to always be a fan of this music.
This music is as fresh and vibrant as it ever was when I used to play it relentlessly on vinyl. Fantastic, amazing group. Everyone should have "Surrealistic Pillow" in their music collection.
Yes, all the gushing about Grace; I agree. But really, isn't the opening drum part on this song darn infectious? As a 7th or 8th Grader, I couldn't get that rhythm out of my head!
Absolutey fantastic opener. This song is a knockout in all aspects : its musical structure , the soaring vocals, the growling fuzz guitars, the pounding Gene Krupa drum opening and the unhinged guitar solo at the end over a bed of distorted bass and seething rythym guitar. I'll always love the Airplane. They gave us so much great music . I hope some of the younger players turn on to them.
my sister owned two jefferson airplane records this one and a blue comp (i still haven't forgiven her to not have let me have it and sold it, seems a rare one) which she played non stop when I was a baby sharing a room with her. This song is one of the first sounds of rock music I heard and I thank her for getting me into the JA.
I saw Jorma Kaukonen at hardly strictly Bluegrass this year in Golden gate park He is still great, please seek his new music CD's and add them to your collections.
Yeah - this is a GREAT song that I forgot about - it showed where the Airplane were headed.. it's still understated here - on Baxter's and Pointed Little Head they had developed it a lot more - there were still part a 'folk rock' band on the first two albums - so I don't listen to them much and forgot this song. They are so underrated - musically they were very advanced and distinctive - always preferred them to the Dead - but they didn't have a single charismatic personality to unite them.
This song has an opening riff that is a variation on the "Last Train To Clarksville" riff, which itself, is a variation on the "Run For Your Life" riff. All roads seem to lead back to the Beatles.
@txeire -- Almost like something out of a dream when you think about what a creative genius she was too. There were a few at the time like her (Joni for example). No airheads.
