  • I heard a very nice variation on this quite a few years ago. Chris Foster was the performer. The words are slightly different, the main change being one additional verse. After "All for the sake of his lady fair," Chris sang:

I killed my wife and my children three

    All for the cursed jealousy,

And on my servant, I laid the blame

And hanged he was all for the same.

Another traditional song that tells the same story is "Sir William Gower". Fairport Convention did a version of it.

  • The lead singer sounds like George Donaldson from Celtic thunder. Great song none the less

  • Hi BarbaricGoose,

I think I spotted another lyric difference. At the end I think its "That so enraged the whole ships crew..." instead of "That so enraged all the ships crew..." BTW thanks for putting up the song, its a great one.

  • Hey BarbaricGoose,

I think I spotted a different lyric. I think at the end the line goes "It so enraged the whole ships crew that overboard the captain threw" not "It so enraged all the ships crew..." at least that's what I hear. BTW thanks for putting up the song, its a great one.

  • Hi BarbaricGoose. Sorry, I meant to say 'The winds abated and so to sea' not 'see'. I think I'd had a glass of wine too many last night!

  • Hi Barbaricgoose. Some of your lyrics a bit out too, I think. I know this version well. Last verse is...'Our treacherous captain, he being gone, immediately there came a calm. The winds abated and so to see, and we sailed on to Americay'. Verse 4 should say 'Our captain in his cabin lay'. Verse 6 should be 'Bosun, said he, it grieves my heart to think I played a villain's part. There are a few odd words missing here and there but I think they're the main bits.

  • @rasher2221 Thanks for clearing up some of that, but a few things: "The winds abated and so to see," I think is incorrect. I'm pretty sure it's "So'd the sea," as in, so did the sea. The winds and sea abated, which means they calmed down. "So to see" doesn't make much sense. And I'm really surprised I missed the "Villain's part" line. =P Anyway, thanks!

  • Brilliant my dad has just played the album for me. I think its great will definatley be playing it at family parties this Winter.....
