So the congressman mistook Dr. Brinkley for Condoleeza-- what's the big deal? No doubt he has made larger foo-paz in the past. Next he probably will work to cut off all govenment funding going to Rice University and its students, to assure that Dr. Brinkley really does work for the private sector.
Young was way out of line announcing the proceding as worthless and attempting to characterize Brinkley's testimony as garbage before hearing it. What a jerk.

I tend to think that Alaska will have to be tapped more heavily in the future, if it will help lesson our dependence on foreign energy, and lower the risk of a global war. But I haven't made my mind up on that topic yet, and more importantly, we have more pressing issues. Like debt, and saving the dollar. For example, after reading @canofsand's post, he or she is apparently under the assumption that Congressman Young represents a "district" of Alaska when in fact he is our only U.S. Representative. Note: Dr. Brinkley did nothing to belittle people from community colleges or non-elite institutions. His said "Yuba College," not "Yuba Community College," and made no reference to the quality of that school. The real "belittling" statement was towards Young, who "couldn't graduate."
To those defending Young, keep in mind you're defending someone who called the BP oil spill a "natural phenomena" and is notorious for taking bribes and wasting hundreds of millions on pointless bridges/roads.

The chair of the committee didn't concede any such thing, he simply said, when Brinkley stated he called him Mr. Rice that he, himself, has been called all sorts of names, and that's where he ends it, as Brinkley cuts him off. You're inventing motives and sentiments when you have no idea what either Young or Hastings meant by either statement.

I'd agree with you that people who attended elite institutions, are power-hungry, and classist --- they tend to view themselves as being above those who did not attend such institutions. But it's not just a liberal trait.

Professor Brinkley did lose his temper. But really, we should expect better from a Senator. He shouldn’t have talked to Brinkley like he was a dog, telling him to “just sit there and be quiet”.

@acebandge we don't know WHAT he was talking about when he said garbage. And, if someone attacked your intelligence because you flubbed their name, wouldn't you get pissed? Besides, Brinkley was wrong-Young has a B.A. from Cal State.
Why is Brinkley even there to begin with? This is a matter of science. Brinkley isn't an environmental scientists, he's not a biologist, he's not a scientist in any manner. He's a historian. The fact that they even bring him in us silly to begin with.
