One day a guy left for a pee when old Mr. Weaver was out; when Weaver came back, he wanted to know where Doug was. We all mumbled about a tunnel and he tore the place apart, not wanting to believe Doug was down there. When Doug opened the door, he howled GO TO THE OFFICE! at him. Doug was totally "WTF?!" and we damn near wet ourselves.

looks nothing more than elevated craw spaces to me, this could easily be designed into new homes. Back when I took drafting in vocational school I had a layout similar to this, where the living room, kitchen, and bedrooms could be connected with hatches mounted inside closets and a hatch going out to the backyard. Nothing special, just specifying the crawl space to be 4ft over 2ft. And predictably, the idea was killed and I was accused of being unrealistic.
