Actually DOS got it's name from the earlier versions of the system called QDOS (Quick Dirty Operating System) which was a hobby project bought by microsoft for use with IBM compatibles. It is a command line based system (you have to type commands to use it) It worked with harddrives and floppy disks. So you didn't HAVE to use a floppy, but it was normal to have so little harddisk space, or none at all, that you used floppies.
