The perfect tactic to take on the schiltron. In that regard the movie is accurate. King Richard sent the troops to lock the Scottish schiltrons in place and then bombarded them with arrows to break them. It was a brutal affair.
dumb yank. you dont have a clue what i base my outlooks on, or what i believe.
i knew my scottish history before i ever saw braveheart you ignorant idiot. run along and start on some1 else because you clearly arent worth talking too
Keepingcommandments, although Braveheart is a highly fictionalised account of the first Scottish war of independence, Longshanks was actually quite a ruthless king. He killed most of the inhabitants of Berwick upon Tweed, as well as using the request for help from Scottish nobles to select a king as a brutal attempt to install himself as the feudal overlord of a neighbouring country. And I would highly doubt that the United Kingdom has made the worlds lives easier in the long run...
@nazinator7 How on earth was his attempt to use his position of judgement brutal? It wasn't untill the Scots waged war on England that things became brutal. And I see you omit Wallaces vengeful attacks on Northumberland? Because he's Scottish. It's funny, an English historical figure does something "wrong" (if youre ignorant enough to judge those that lived hundreds of years ago based on todays ethical code) and it is an eternal stain on the nation, but a scot or an irishman does it and its fine.
@slowlybutfasholy Everything in this clip is fictitous, all the monolouge is invented, york wasn't sacked, the battle of sterling bridge took place at a bridge, Wallace never met the princess. The movie is based on a 15th centruy poem not reality. Don't get me wrong it's a very entertaining movie but it's not a historical document.
While most monarchs of the time were ruthless, Edward I was actually worse than many of his predecessors. He was certainly more brutal than his father Henry III.
While Braveheart is not very historically accurate, by modern standards Edward I would be an evil man- he massacred towns of people, ordered the bodies of his enemies to be mutilated, and persecuted England's jews. He invaded other nations such as Scotland and Gwynedd- he even constructed nets of castles in North Wales to oppress the North Welsh. And Longshanks has little to do with the British Union, that was centuries later in 1707.
@keepingcommandments Yep, and likewise, King George III was not evil as Americans make him out to be. It was actually the Americans who were the villains.

But when he was born, England was an emerging power, after his death, England had recaptured ans subdued her territories in Ireland, Wales, Scotland and Gascony and had came to the forefront in Papal approval. What excuses Richard The Lioneart of his many transgressions and then chastises Edward on his, is only a distorted personal view.

@keepingcommandments but Longshanks was no saint either. Lets not forget his harsh treatment of the Jews, Llewelyn Prince Of Wales or many others. With that being said, old Longshanks has to be up there as one of, if not the most, successful King Of England
Longshanks was one of the greatest Kings England ever had. Not many people realize that, or the fact he was the son of King Henry the VIII. An obviously better king than his father ever was, lol. Anyone who knows and understands history knows that England was the epicenter of the Industrial Revolution. diggerodell100 i have watched this clip several times for mcgoohan is one of my favorites. for some reason i decided to read a few of the comments and can not believe the degree of hatred that is present. i was expecting the comments to be positive reactions to a fine performance, and not the petty bitter commentary that is here. i am sure i will get shot down for this, but i could not resist voicing an opinion.
@mcRioRemedy There's a higher probability that you will get what you want from someone when they are afraid of you than if they are content with you. It isn't "love" in the romantic sense or even the platonic sense. It's a different meaning of the word. The reason nobody attacks President Obama is because they know he'd send the CIA after their ass. The principle holds true everywhere from high-school to a nations gov't. The people on top get there by being ruthless. You want to argue that?
@TehSmellulare im well aware thats how people in power operate, my point is, NONE of them are happy, none of them are free to do what they want, they are all caught up in the biggest type of rat race its unbelievable, they are insecure and sad inside, whereas im free and happy, living live doin what i want, when i want.
obama cant even walk down a street without 5 million bodygaurds protectin him. fuck that for a game of soldiers
@mcRioRemedy Dude, if you're content doing what you're doing, then that's fine. The problem is that you'll never find objective success without a backbone like that. If you act that way, you (not you specifically, but anyone who behaves in such a way) will end up on the bottom--every time, hence why Longshanks son is such a failure and everyone (from the characters and the people watching the movie) knows it. It's because he's a little bitch.
@TehSmellulare i am a man without being feared, id rather be respected and loved, people who rule by fear in this day and age have something seriously wrong with them, the school bully syndrome. no place for it and no need for it. its not like the average guy starts war is it. in the movies yes, but not in most peoples real life.
longshanks is feared and hes still a cunt, his son is soft and hes a cunt too. the person in the movie who is respected is wallace, because he is brave and honourable.
@mcRioRemedy Ok well, I didn't say Wallace wasn't the hero. I was contrasting the aggressive and capable Longshanks and Wallace against the little pussy that is his son. I would rather be Wallace or Longshanks than the son.
@RichardElden That dosen't mean anything. The only reason he had multiple children was because he had to continue on the lineage. Look it up! He had homosexual relations with Piers Gaveston. He also had a terrible realtionship with his wife, Isabella of France. She was the one who ordered the death of her husband (he was killed by her agents). He was only king for 19 years! He sucked at being king! King James the VI and I was also a homosexual.
Based on your comment, you are a slimy maggot with a very tiny dick. The only "talentless bald wig-wearing CUNT" whom you have crossed paths with was your mother.
lol...one of the funniest scenes in a serious movie ever.. longshanks is an awesome character right next to that mad irishman guy and who cares if it wasn't historically accurate. it was a great movie, and probably better than it would have been if it was historically accurate.
Best king ever played in a movie. While the movie isnt historically accurate it is based on wallace and wallace was a bad mother fucker. Im not a scot but I visited scotland and climbed the wallace monument. The wouldnt have built that right next to stirling castle for no reason. Look up the real history and you will see that this movie is great and it did justice to a man that stood up to tyranny.
Undoubedly Edward I was a ruthless man and a nasty piece of work like most medieval rulers. To build an empire, go on two crusades and to quench a rebellion of an entire nation in the North he most probably WAS the kind of man Patrick
to those people who are wishing cancer on gibson, and showing joy at degrading death of partick McGoohan, enough already, your starting to be patheitic, these actors put their hearts and souls into it. Far greater an acomplishment than anything you people have probably done, these peole could kick your asse in every way imaginable, they had and have character.
pps here's a little information for people who say this movie sucks, 18th highest grossing film of 1995, The film's depiction of the Battle of Stirling Bridge is considered the best movie battles in cinema history, The movie was nominated for 10 Oscars and won 5: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Sound Editing, Best Makeup. grossed about $210,409,945 world wide, then more with vhs and dvd sales, when you people acomplish that, then maybe you can judge
@MAnnaconduit1 This made up, historically worthless film is a piece of crap. King Edward II wasn't gay at all and all the Oscars should have gone to The Usual Suspects. Why didn't they film the battle of Sirtling Bridge over a, er, bridge?
The Irish were actually allied with the English against Wallace. Did you know Edward the Bruce carried out genocide in Ireland?
why i agree the usual suspects derserved some of those wards(an amazing movie by the way) i in no way defend Edward the Bruce, but he lead lead the fight at Bannock Burn, and yes the irish sided with the british, mosltly becasue the english would kill them if they didn't but not every irishman served the crown, many rebelled. This film has some inaccuracies, edward II was not homosexual but he was weak, he was abandoned and dethroned then killed until edawrd III took over
i love the girly moaning the pricne makes when longshanks beats him becasue he through a hissy fit becasue his ass pounding love was thrown out the window. it shows you how weak he is, and makes you glad he's being taught a lesson by a real man. too bad the king didn't throw out his feminine son as well, asnd get a more manly, qualified heir to throne maybe a caousing or nepthew.
."..use up the Irish... the dead cost nothing" ...well
...since the Irish are know to be strong and have stamina... then when I flip the meaning on it's head... hmmm...then... the Irish served for "free"... and were unbribable... and Edward "the oldest brother" ...needed loyalty the most... and loyalty is worth more then gold/women/power/drink & food... and lets remember that this is just a Hollywood fairytale... so everything is reversed or upside down
No greater actor could have portrayed King Edward quite as convincingly as Sir Patrick here himself! He's such a concited, self-centered, self-righteous, arrogant bastard......I love em'! =D Nobody tells him what is what or what to do! Ahhh, when men were really MEN! King Edward can live next door to me anytime he wants! He's got brains, class, poise, tact, looks, strength.....and he knows how to keep his family in line too! Now that's one jolly-well, rowdy bloke!!! =D
Isabella of France was only twelve years old... too young for child birth... also... this was a time before people ate chicken with hormone additives...hmmm...
I will degrade my self further and use the term of OMFG... you can make your own conclusions... Mr. Mel Gibson
furthermore... the King knew everything... he knew who/what/when/where/how and why... Longshanks... knew she was pregnant all along... and ...it was quite unfortunate and common for women to died during child birth(ha ha)... or to switch the baby.. etc.
Longshanks aka Lordson aka (role the letter "R") Lord-Deutschen
aka Herr-Deutch aka German-master etc. ...(Longshanks was a disrespectful insult/nickname) ...he had 100% loyalty from his loyal troops... and had spies everywhere hahaha
...it's amazing to think that the British use to role their "Rs"... just like in the Polish or German language... hmmm...
also... if your the King... then it's smart to have a sissy la-la hair to the thrown... someone with no military ambitions... and... and that was the reason why the "advisor wessel to the prince" got thrown out the window...
plus... when the Kings escort asks "wouldn't we hit our own troops,Sire" ...he was just being sarcastic... in front of the trader/puppet king
just so you know back then homosexuals were considered scum and weak, it was not tolerated back then, but becasue the homosexual is the kings son, he can't simply throw him out as well, he needs a amle heir, so he shows his disgust and the disgust of others for this ass raising weakling who is actually only weak not becasue he's gay but becasue he's been pampered all his life and is pathetic. Gibson portrayed accuratley the hisotrical treament of homosexuals, learn history
Jesus Christ this movie blows. The Scots wear kilts from the 18th century with Pictish face-paint from the 5th century! Here's a hint Mel, Wallace was a knight, his battlegear looked just like the what the English had. Not that it matters tough because you dressed them wrong as well.
Christ, i do hope that Mels rumored Viking movie never gets off the ground i tremble when i think about how bad Mr.Historian here, will fuck up the history of my part of the world.
England's northern army has been annihilated, and Longshanks returns from France and finds out immediately that Wallace has sacked York, and to top that, his own nephew's head has been sent to him in a basket. Longshanks was clearly in no mood for Phillip's 'arts of war' bullshit.
This is great entertainment, and I love Patrick McGoohan as Longshanks here. However, you have to understand the movie has to portray things in black and white, with Edward 1 (Longshanks) as evil as possible. Historically Longshanks was one of the more effective English Kings, with many positive credits and he wasn't the only nobleman who was always seeking to expand his holdings. In fact, that's the family business from the dark ages to near modern times - to be the warrior leader.
@vonKressenstein He was seen as being a strong leader and a warrior king, however later criticised for his ruthless methods against non-English people (Scots, Welsh and he evicted the Jews from Britain). However there's no doubt that he had a commanding presence, and Patrick McGoohan is brilliant in this role: one of my favourite movie villians.
Interesting fact about Edward Longshanks is that he is one of the few medieval kings who was faithful to his wife, Eleanor. They were married when he was 15 (and she was 13) for 36 years, had 15 children and he never fooled around at all. Upon her death he erected several Eleanor Crosses across England. :D
Maybe you people who are glad McGoohan died of cancer will die the same way one day !!!! He was an awesome actor of Irish descent ! Have some respect or don't watch the fucking movie !!!!!!
@ChupacabraMaquina no, now you're mixing up strategy games with medieval kings. They were evil greedy fuckers who did evil greedy fucking things for evil, greedy fucking reasons , romanticizing them is really creepy.
By the way, the fact that people are glad that he died (the actor) is just horrible. I am Scottish and I don't like the thought of Longshanks as much as the next Scot, but the guy did an excellent portrayal of edward II, it was convincing, and scary...whch is what the movie required. Atleast he made you hate him which is what a good actor should do and what a good villain should be.

Might I remind you motherfuckers what Machiavelli put into words many years later?
"Since fear and love can hardly coexist together, one must choose between the two. Its is greater to be feared than loved."
Longshanks knew what was up, even if his son was a pusscake.

@TehSmellulare me myself and i, what about you, how many people do you rule?
p.s. - i dont wanna rule any1, im content.
mcRioRemedy 8 months ago
@mcRioRemedy There's a higher probability that you will get what you want from someone when they are afraid of you than if they are content with you. It isn't "love" in the romantic sense or even the platonic sense. It's a different meaning of the word. The reason nobody attacks President Obama is because they know he'd send the CIA after their ass. The principle holds true everywhere from high-school to a nations gov't. The people on top get there by being ruthless. You want to argue that?
TehSmellulare 8 months ago
@TehSmellulare im well aware thats how people in power operate, my point is, NONE of them are happy, none of them are free to do what they want, they are all caught up in the biggest type of rat race its unbelievable, they are insecure and sad inside, whereas im free and happy, living live doin what i want, when i want.
obama cant even walk down a street without 5 million bodygaurds protectin him. fuck that for a game of soldiers
mcRioRemedy 8 months ago
@mcRioRemedy Dude, if you're content doing what you're doing, then that's fine. The problem is that you'll never find objective success without a backbone like that. If you act that way, you (not you specifically, but anyone who behaves in such a way) will end up on the bottom--every time, hence why Longshanks son is such a failure and everyone (from the characters and the people watching the movie) knows it. It's because he's a little bitch.
TehSmellulare 8 months ago
@TehSmellulare i am a man without being feared, id rather be respected and loved, people who rule by fear in this day and age have something seriously wrong with them, the school bully syndrome. no place for it and no need for it. its not like the average guy starts war is it. in the movies yes, but not in most peoples real life.
longshanks is feared and hes still a cunt, his son is soft and hes a cunt too. the person in the movie who is respected is wallace, because he is brave and honourable.
mcRioRemedy 8 months ago

King James the VI and I was also a homosexual.

lol...one of the funniest scenes in a serious movie ever.. longshanks is an awesome character right next to that mad irishman guy and who cares if it wasn't historically accurate. it was a great movie, and probably better than it would have been if it was historically accurate.
maumac09 10 months ago

Mc Coohan has portrayed in this film.

@MAnnaconduit1
pps here's a little information for people who say this movie sucks, 18th highest grossing film of 1995, The film's depiction of the Battle of Stirling Bridge is considered the best movie battles in cinema history, The movie was nominated for 10 Oscars and won 5: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Sound Editing, Best Makeup. grossed about $210,409,945 world wide, then more with vhs and dvd sales, when you people acomplish that, then maybe you can judge
so
MAnnaconduit1 10 months ago
@MAnnaconduit1 This made up, historically worthless film is a piece of crap. King Edward II wasn't gay at all and all the Oscars should have gone to The Usual Suspects. Why didn't they film the battle of Sirtling Bridge over a, er, bridge?
The Irish were actually allied with the English against Wallace. Did you know Edward the Bruce carried out genocide in Ireland?
JuanMacready 10 months ago
@JuanMacready
why i agree the usual suspects derserved some of those wards(an amazing movie by the way) i in no way defend Edward the Bruce, but he lead lead the fight at Bannock Burn, and yes the irish sided with the british, mosltly becasue the english would kill them if they didn't but not every irishman served the crown, many rebelled. This film has some inaccuracies, edward II was not homosexual but he was weak, he was abandoned and dethroned then killed until edawrd III took over

furthermore... the King knew everything... he knew who/what/when/where/how and why...

Longshanks is a fucking bad ass. I am going to have to study Medieval England because of this.
MajBlood 1 year ago
This is great entertainment, and I love Patrick McGoohan as Longshanks here. However, you have to understand the movie has to portray things in black and white, with Edward 1 (Longshanks) as evil as possible. Historically Longshanks was one of the more effective English Kings, with many positive credits and he wasn't the only nobleman who was always seeking to expand his holdings. In fact, that's the family business from the dark ages to near modern times - to be the warrior leader.
vonKressenstein 1 year ago
@vonKressenstein He was seen as being a strong leader and a warrior king, however later criticised for his ruthless methods against non-English people (Scots, Welsh and he evicted the Jews from Britain). However there's no doubt that he had a commanding presence, and Patrick McGoohan is brilliant in this role: one of my favourite movie villians.
likepocketsjingling 1 year ago
Interesting fact about Edward Longshanks is that he is one of the few medieval kings who was faithful to his wife, Eleanor. They were married when he was 15 (and she was 13) for 36 years, had 15 children and he never fooled around at all. Upon her death he erected several Eleanor Crosses across England. :D
