Allow me to toot this brilliant man's horn today. Alan is still squirming with the grooviest, hippest intentions to melt your boots off. He has uploaded this wonderful video below to youtube:
Alan Haven - What's Going On
( be sure to subscribe to Alanhaven and encourage some more great posts of his playing).
@billmcljnr - I remember Alan doing alternate sets with Peter Leigh's big band at the palais with the occasional teddy boy's rumble going on in the crowd. Thinking back to the 50's, the dance halls were only source of live jazz & swing around in the NW apart from the jazz at club "43" on oxford rd M/cr.
@doctortracy Although he played a heritage, I don't think this is his actual heritage he's miming on. The very early Heritages(like Alan played) had solid wood keys with a plastic overlay and a rounded key front. They had a much shallower drop to the key action and were much quicker to play. Very very rare. Alan later had 4' added to the bass pedals and a seperate output to a bass cab that "ignored" the swell pedal also a leslie knee control. He also had marble formica added to the end cheeks!
Darn! What a shame he's miming! (and WHY? He's a monster organist)
The organ looks very much like a Lowrey TLOK (Holiday). You can tell it's a Lowrey by the unique key shape.
I have one. It's a fabulous instrument. Alan produced his own range of organs, but I never had the privilege of playing one, or even seeing one.
I saw Alan many years ago and he was amazing. His pedal technique is quite special to say the least. He's such a tasteful jazzer. I don't remember all that body movement though!
What a perfect way to approach the organ. I bet you could match Alan's body motion in this clip to almost any of his songs and most watchers would think he was playing it. I fully dig his playing.
It's actually a Lowery organ Alan's playing here. I met Alan about 2 years ago. He's in the North West and home from Spain. Haven for Sale is my favourite Haven album followed by Live at Annie's Room. By the way this video is out of sync with the audio.
I bought my first organ 45 years ago as a result of seeing Alan at a concert. He plays the most exceptional chords. I wanted the Haven Crumar but couldnt afford it at the time.
Iremember reguarly seeing Alan playing his range of Haven organs and Crumer keyboards. I bought a Haven 103 which I split and gigged for years. Alan a teriffic player and still have his record, The Alan Haven Organ Show. Anyone know if Alan is still playing here? Last Iheard he was living in Spain. Hope he's ok and still entertaining somewhere out there.Talent like that is just not around now.
Many thanks for adding this or any other of Alan. This is the first time I have ever seen an image of him. He accompanied me on the daily 25 mile journey between Manchester and Warrington in those post-Thatcher survival years.
Ah! Alan Haven and his Lowrey Heritage DS0-1. Easily the UK's best ever organist. Thanks to him, I own 4 of these organs - each one as unreliable as the other. great vid this, but he looks like he's miming to a previously made live recording for the show. Shame there's not more of him on here.
I saw Alan and Tony several times when we were playing in the 60s he was using a Vox organ at that time with a Lowrie Rotary Speaker, awesome sound, awsome players, I have a track By Alan and Tony which blows me away "Chase me Blues" it is mind blowing.
Always a lively player - brilliant. I remember Alan touring the country in the 70's selling his Crumar 'Haven' organs. His show always started with his wife (an ex Miss World) placing his moccasin slippers by the pedalboard for his amazing foot work.
Alan Haven..Simply the best Jazz organist in the UK.Playing a classic Lowrey Heritage,I had one in the sixties toured all over the UK with it in a Horse Box sat on a mattress to stop the valves(Tubes) falling out!

It's not a TLOK - it's a Heritage DSO-1, valve-oscillator. A Holiday (TLOK) doesn't quite match up...

Although I don't really like this kind of music, I really enjoyed this! Alan Haven is a very good Hammond organist.

The Alan Haven revival starts here!
Which enterprising, public-spirited record company is going to re-release Alan's music on CD?

Just heard his work on the soundtrack for the 1964 comedy JOLLY BAD FELLOW. What a big, meaty Hammond sound!

Spoke to Alan last week and he reminded me of this show.
I have some rough camcorder footage of Alan playing a JVC during the early 80's. On VHS if I can just get it converted.
Still the best UK jazz organist, even now.

Tx for sharing. The "Haven For Sale" album has 1-2-3, which is an absolute corker.

Best British keyboard player ever. Brilliant. Not the best tune to showcase his talent though.

Awesome playing. Incredible really.
But, LOL, he looks like his bench is too hot to sit still on.
I suppose that's just the music and the beat moving him.

Hang on to that organ, boy! You're gonna fly away!
Looks like he's sitting on one of those stupid swirling chairs that's supposed to exercise you in the office!
