moistsheep, Mr. Russell will turn 80 in August. According to Wikipedia, "Russell is most famous for his series of PBS specials, aired live at least four times a year between 1975 and 2004."
I've been missing his shows for a while; didn't realize until just now that it's been eight years since the last one. I'm glad I taped his 25th Anniversary PBS Special; and I'm glad we have Jon Stewart to watch -- not as classy as Mark, but better than nothing!
If you missed Mark Russell's great visit as a guest on the Dave's Gone By radio show, visit davesgoneby. c 0m and hear a free archive of the show (episode #354, which aired May 14, 2011 on UNC Radio).
@moistsheep I will check that out. I went to Mark Russell's website and it looks like it has not been updated in a couple of years. He would be pushing 80 by now, I'd think. Is he still performing anywhere? I always enjoyed him on PBS. Thanks.
I was introduced to Mark Russell via his PBS specials long before I heard of Tom Lehrer so the first time I heard Lehere on Dr. Demento I was wondering who this guy was ripping off Mark Russell's schtick. Russell didn't rip off Lehrer but Tom was no doubt one of his primary inspirations, if not primary. Lehrer decided to be a mathematician instead of a performer so Russell filled an important void. My thoughts anyway. Thanks for posting this video!
