tama si Johnny napaka old fashion na ng konsepto ng tao sa masculinity .. ang dami ng bakla ngayon no at ag dami na ring tomboy. so what kung anong gender mo ang mahalaga may maunlad ang sarili mo
One of my employees successfully sued me for £100k+ after claiming he’d suffered “crippling loss of self-esteem” due to my comments.
He’d been a real pain in the office, constantly showing everybody pictures of his young son. All I did was wish him well “this time around”, pointing out that he’d been “a failure as a parent the 1st time”- which was TRUE (a son from his first marriage had overdosed at 17).
Apparently this amounts to some sort of hate crime. Whatever happened to free speech?
Johnny has the right to express himself and his personality in any way he chooses, and to be who he is. Some will like it; some not so much. But no one has the right to insult him for it.
However, I can't totally agree with his comment at 2:10 - there's a reason women and men compete separately in figure skating. To say that we can overlook gender identity entirely is a bit unrealistic.
@nightswimmer99 Yes, but those reasons have to do with physical differences between men and women. Someone's gender identity doesn't change their physical body. He is quite obviously physically male, thus he belongs in the male division due to his physical abilities. What he identifies his gender to be is irrelevant to that fact.
Women and men compete separately in figure skating not because gender identity, but because of biological sex (should be that way, anywho). Anatomically, men are built with a different structure that allows them to jump higher and faster than women on average. I completely agree with Johnny. Gender identity - how people feel on the inside about their gender - should be up to the individual. People should be able to express their grace and athleticism freely.
@Hjosephm gender identity once meant "biological sex", whatever the doctor declared you equipped to be at birth. Somewhere along the way, the definition apparently changed to how a person "feels on the inside about their gender".
If I missed that change, perhaps it's because I haven't given much thought to how I "feel on the inside about my gender".
That said, I agree with you that anyone, in any discipline, should be at liberty to express themselves as they wish.
@nightswimmer99 No, they've actually always been separate - by definition. And both still exist today. And you give a thought about how "you feel on the inside" about your gender every day. How do you choose to represent your gender? How do you dress? What colors do you think are "feminine" and "masculine" and thus associate with your biological sex? If you're a man, how to you present yourself as such? Every man and woman expresses their manhood and womanhood differently.
@Hjosephm I have 3 rules for clothing - it must be clean, warm in winter and within the law in summer. As for colors, it's light shades in warm weather, darker shades in cold. I don't rule out any shade but yellow since it makes me look like a liver patient. But I do shop in the section marked "ladies", since that's where women are directed by societal custom to go. So I suppose you're correct in that we do all think about it, at least passively.

@philipem01 Well your spelling is incorrect. This is English, there are rules. Also, my compassion for my fellow humans is why I encourage manliness amongst the boys. If I saw others as a threat to my masculinity I would encourage them to be as feminine as possible- figure that out. Every day I see boys wearing the skin-tight jeans and adopting the metrosexual lifestyle. Obviously they seem pretty impressionable which is why they need a little guidance to help them grow up strong and not soft.

Wow, he comes across as an extremely well-integrated and self-assured person. Admirable. I think he will be a great role model for a lot of young people -- especially those who don't fit neatly into society's prescriptions of how people should be. They can look at him and know they have value; that it's worthwhile to be themselves despite the pitfalls.
Johnny Weir has an angelic beauty. Please don't get shocked by my words but, honestly he is one of the very few people on earth who can make me hot just when I hear their name. Johnny : NEVER CHANGE A THING FOR GOD'S SAKE. :p
You know what's gay and queerish? Boys who always hang out with boys rather than girls. Homophobes who hang with their same sex friends are more gay than those who don't hang with the opposite sex.
@psychoB8765 You forgot guys who spend a lot of time making homophobic comments on "gay" related videos...I mean, real str8 guys don't care if other guys are gay. They might be interested in the vids, but wouldn't need or want to make a comment like that, right?
You go Johnny, People who call you a fag are ignorant, attention getting, conformists. They rather be told what to do than be themselves. Whatever you say about Johnny, you can just kiss his ass. That's all you guys are doing. KISSING ASS! oh and btw, most Olympic athletes are gay, so why even judge?
Any person who portrays a stereotype should expect negative comments as well as positive ones. If you have an over the top personality then people are going to respond. It won't always be what we want to hear. Johnny is a great skater but his antics outshine his ability sometimes.
@mabdancer I dont have a problem with someone commenting on his perceived sexuality. Commenting as in observing him, that is. Guys who seek out videos of him to make disparaging comments about his perceived sexuality, in my view, are lacking confidence in their own sexuality. A confident man of any sexual orientation would not feel any desire to put him down. i.e., as we know, the closet cases are the loudest homophobes.
@philipem01 First this video was sent to me.... I didn't seek this video out. You are joking when you say "perceived sexuality" right. I didn't put him down. My point was that people's antics can overshadow their talents. And please don't try and insult my confidence as a gay man. Every day when I wake up next to the man I married I have no questions of who or what I am.
@mabdancer I don't know his sexuality any more than you do. I say that as one gay man to another. And I apologize for assuming you were str8, your comments are the kind of thing str8 homophobes often post. I don't think anyone who is being true to themselves is "portraying a stereotype" I would think those words describe a pretender, someone acting in a way that is not natural to themselves. And if I misunderstood you as saying 'He deserved what he got' for being himself, then I apologize again.
@philipem01 If he was straight that would be a HUGE shock. My comments had no hate in it. His personality is over the top, and some people look more at some of his antics more than his skating. This isn't a straight or gay thing. Think of talented and famous people who are in this same category. Michael Jackson, Anna Nicole, Whitney Houston, etc.
@drewsph1000 ...why thanks, and you too. Why did you feel the need to say that? To prove you AREN'T? It didn't work, I know guys who say things like this are almost always gay themselves...
Team Johnny here! I used to be homophobic because I couldn't accept the fact that I like guys but the joke was on me. Calling a person a fag, or a dyke won't make you more of a heterosexual. It just makes it more obvious how insecure a person is about his or her own homosexuality... & possibly bisexuality.
It´s interesting how HE is suppose to answer what his view of masculinity is like he suppose to decide for everyone else and decide what it is like he´s a politician or somethin! Its so stupid and Im sure it has something to do with the fact that theres older people in that pressconference that are going to decide what´s being written and put in the newspaper and maybe write something nastylike these commentators at the olympics. He shouldn´t have to bear that burden.
@zeroendless2 sorry i meant to thumbs up this comment but i accidently clicked thumbs down......dont know how to undo it but just thought i'd let you know :)
"And I think, masculinity and feminity, it’s something that’s very old fashioned. There is a whole new generation of people that aren’t defined by their sex or their race or by who they like to sleep with. " – Johnny Weir
Thank you Johnny Weir for such precious words. This is defenitely how everyone should act :).
Johnny, this is why I love you. :) You are always amazing and if more people were as level-headed, eloquent and open-minded as you are, the world would be a better place.
I agree with his opinions on masculinity and femininity 100%.
99 Percent of the human race can't skate at Johnny's level and 99 pecent of humanity is not as beautifully evolved as Johnny. His ability to be himself and act and speak faithfully to that is beauty and intelligence beyond compare.
I don't think there was anyone in this planet that was shocked when he came out. So why anyone said anything worse after or before so why it's a big deal is the 64,000 dollar question. I mean it's figure skating, you pretty much have to assume the guys are super duper gay, and because it's figure skating, who gives a shit in the first place? Now if he was a football player then you could see shock and nasty comments because such defies masculinity standards, but he ice skates, big surprise.
He takes abuse and admits they do have a right to their own opinions rather than lowering himself to the same level. If that isn't manly, I don't know what is.
@mclovin01021 you are an idiot..you aren't raised gay..you are born gay, why don't you try reading a book, you're obviously uneducated and it shows horribly, I'm embarrassed for you..
With all the flamboyance and other half spoken words supposedly replacing gay, Johnny is more of a man than many other tough guys in sport and not only. He's free minded and has the courage to speak it out loud, people usually don't like hearing things that they're not pleased with so a person like him is not very liked
What I know about Johnny Wier, is that he's absolutely beautiful on ice. Skaters have different styles, and his is very soft and ballet like, with feeling all the way through his fingertips. And he's right, his sexuality is nobodys business but his. Ifyou don't like to watch his skating, shift channel or change opinion!
This is unfortunate, as agoppi love (a boundless and selfless love expressed for all, by all, all working together in a nurturing and accepting manner, putting others first and having a servant's heart) is the highest accomplishment possible by humanity, but this will never be because people will always be self serving, using their intelligence for self gain, and not for learning to accept others. Masculinity is natural for males but expressed differently. Most ACT hard, some KILL, some REBEL.
Yes, society has sanctions that it practices to make those who are acting outside the prescribed gender roles to feel "hated" or disliked, or worthless (unless a woman is considered attractive and acts like a homo or bi, this is encouraged by males, because this arouses their sexuality). Society has established patterns in which males must "act". They must act defensively, unemotional, rigid and strong. What they truly are, or feel like, on the inside, can only be expressed subtly once respected
It is difficult to believe that these men are supposed to be professionals in skating and slur this beautiful athlete. they are pigs- they deserved to be fired. Clearly, they do not belong in this job if they do not understand that some of the figure skaters will be gay. They should be let go. If they were making racist comments, this would not be in question, they would be fired.
What is the strangest part of this is that lots of people are that cover themselves up with there football watching and wrestling. When these people are caught it was a mistake. I am the most open minded person around. I don't care what any body does. I think this guy is great at what he does. Lets not dwell on who people are, move on with your lives and move forward.

so what if he is gay its his choice.it doesnt affect anyone else but him.we all live the way we want its our choice.so if you dont like him cause he is gay thats your decision but dont hate on him for it.
i tell you what also i would like to have friends like him he is a wonderful man and they are hard to find gay or straight.

THERES A REASON PEOPLE HAVE A PROBLEM WITH GAYNESS IT GOES AGAINST YOUR NATURE. I MEAN IF THERE WERE NOTHING WRONG WITH IT WHY WOULD DO SOOO MANY PEOPLE NOT LIKE IT . DO YOU EVER HEAR PEOPLE CALLING NORMAL MAN AND WOMAN RELATIONSHIPS WRONG NO SO YOU KNOW YOU HAVE SECOND THOUGHTS ABOUT IT. I DIDNT LIKE THEM INSULTING HIM THAT IS WRONG BUT THERE IS A RIGHT WAY TO SAY ITS WRONG
@eliasleon11 you still failed to make any credible point other than "I DIDN'T LIKE THEM INSULTING HIM." Nothing, other than the Bible, which I'm sure you'll whip out (and actually the bible doesn't really validate your "point," or lack thereof, either) could possibly support whatever statement you were trying to make about homosexuality.
Really? Your argument it people don't like it so it must be wrong? Most Americans hate Brussels Sprouts, but I don't see stupid Christians picketing stores that sell them.
I've followed figure skating and the Olympics for years, and Johnny Weir has been one of my favorites. Thank you, Johnny, for speaking out - you are a hero.
I love Johnny Weir, he is one of my favorite skaters of all times. He is so expressive on the ice and so articulate in interviews that I could only wish for some other skaters to exhibit this kind of "masculinity". Most of them are utterly boring. Btw, not all Americans are narrow-minded, otherwise I would have moved back to Europe a long time ago.
had he not gone into skating he should have become a public speaker! he is elloquent, intellectual, and speaks so calmly and genuinely from the heart. who cares if hes gay or not, hes smart and sweet not to mention adorable looking! good luck johnny, those commentators prolly wish they were half as good at skating as u!
so, so eloquently stated. I love him so much. <3 P.S. Masculinity and femininity are socially constructed, as far as I can tell. Just because you're a man doesn't mean you need to belch and scratch and be a brute, and just because you're a woman doesn't mean you need to cry and bat your eyes and be arm decoration for some guy.

if its not an issue, why is he bringing it up. obviously it is. good skater, stop defending yourself. if you cant ignore them, then you're no better. point is, you want people to ignore you, ignore them.
Are you serious? He was insulted by these men, had his gender questioned, & was asked about it for days afterward. He finally held the press conference to address the comments because almost a week later he WAS still being asked. Why should he have to have slurs hurled at him at all, let alone be forced to ignore them? He does not have to & should not hide. They're the jerks, not Johnny Weir. How can you say he's no better simply because he chose to speak out against slurs?
the words that he uttered just confirmed to me that the knowledge you acquire through different experiences makes you such a unique fixture in personality and behavior. this guy is one unique rare species in human soceity n im proud i got to hear of him before i died. what he said was so polished it blew me away. its not something i hear alot nowadays from a MAN. who agrees?
I wasn't a huge fan of his during the Olympics, but this eloquent and mature response to the immaturity of the french commentators just blew me out of the water. Way to go.
@littlenickyn Yeah guess Americans arent really swinging liberal these days. Your worthless nonworking ideals are being rejected day by day. Your party couldnt even hang on to your control for more then 2 years.
I was so disappointed I didn't get to see him when he was in Spkane. He's amazingly talented and I love his flare, style and his rebelion against society. <3
"aren't defined by.. who they they like to sleep with"
For the love of God, I wish more people shared this sentiment.
I am as straight as can be, but let me tell you, this man spoke true words of wisdom. I don;t care if you're gay, doesn't change who you are as a person,
Not particularly into skating, but I love this man SO much. What an eloquent, perfect way to explain how assuming anything based on the colours he wears, or his clothes, or the way he does his hair is ridiculous.
Johnny Weir has just been scheduled to perform in Yu-Na Kim's brand new skating show called 2010 All That Skate LA. The show is in Los Angeles on Saturday, October 2, 2010, 7:00PM, and Sunday, October 3, 2010, 3:00 PM at the Staples Center. In addition, it includes skaters Michelle Kwan, Tanith Belbin and Ben Agosto, Ashley Wagner, Stephane Lambiel, Brian Joubert, Shen Xue & Zhao Hongbo of China, and Olympic Dance Champions Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir.
they hate u b'coz there r jealous of what u can do,they don't. Love u johny...........Don't give a damn about it..........................let's em suck their word, only JESUS can judge u,good luck
Wow. I was really impressed by his speech. It's rare that you find such profound wisdom in someone so young. I think he's absolutely right though, and I hope that in one or two generations people will not be judged by what gender, sexuality, race or religion they are, but by "the content of their character".
@denalihedgehog The sad thing is that Johnny's statement here was about people passing unfortunate and inaccurate judgements that not only hurt him but hurt other people as well. And you have passed judgement about the American population that is unfortunate and untrue. (Besides, Johnny was talking about FRENCH commentators, not Americans. So criticism of America seems completely uncalled for and unrelated.) Johnny brings a fresh angle to figure skating and hope he skates for many years to come.
so well spoken.. not just extraordinary talented but very inteligent too..

Zuxilbaja 8 months ago 4
You know what's gay and queerish? Boys who always hang out with boys rather than girls. Homophobes who hang with their same sex friends are more gay than those who don't hang with the opposite sex.
psychoB8765 8 months ago 2
@psychoB8765 You forgot guys who spend a lot of time making homophobic comments on "gay" related videos...I mean, real str8 guys don't care if other guys are gay. They might be interested in the vids, but wouldn't need or want to make a comment like that, right?
philipem01 6 months ago
@philipem01 Exactly!! Why talk about it if you hate it?
psychoB8765 6 months ago
You go Johnny, People who call you a fag are ignorant, attention getting, conformists. They rather be told what to do than be themselves. Whatever you say about Johnny, you can just kiss his ass. That's all you guys are doing. KISSING ASS! oh and btw, most Olympic athletes are gay, so why even judge?
psychoB8765 8 months ago 4
Any person who portrays a stereotype should expect negative comments as well as positive ones. If you have an over the top personality then people are going to respond. It won't always be what we want to hear. Johnny is a great skater but his antics outshine his ability sometimes.
mabdancer 8 months ago
@mabdancer I dont have a problem with someone commenting on his perceived sexuality. Commenting as in observing him, that is. Guys who seek out videos of him to make disparaging comments about his perceived sexuality, in my view, are lacking confidence in their own sexuality. A confident man of any sexual orientation would not feel any desire to put him down. i.e., as we know, the closet cases are the loudest homophobes.
philipem01 6 months ago
@philipem01 First this video was sent to me.... I didn't seek this video out. You are joking when you say "perceived sexuality" right. I didn't put him down. My point was that people's antics can overshadow their talents. And please don't try and insult my confidence as a gay man. Every day when I wake up next to the man I married I have no questions of who or what I am.
mabdancer 6 months ago
@mabdancer I don't know his sexuality any more than you do. I say that as one gay man to another. And I apologize for assuming you were str8, your comments are the kind of thing str8 homophobes often post. I don't think anyone who is being true to themselves is "portraying a stereotype" I would think those words describe a pretender, someone acting in a way that is not natural to themselves. And if I misunderstood you as saying 'He deserved what he got' for being himself, then I apologize again.
philipem01 6 months ago
@philipem01 If he was straight that would be a HUGE shock. My comments had no hate in it. His personality is over the top, and some people look more at some of his antics more than his skating. This isn't a straight or gay thing. Think of talented and famous people who are in this same category. Michael Jackson, Anna Nicole, Whitney Houston, etc.

Most ACT hard, some KILL, some REBEL.
nnnbbbmmm79 1 year ago

THERES A REASON PEOPLE HAVE A PROBLEM WITH GAYNESS IT GOES AGAINST YOUR NATURE. I MEAN IF THERE WERE NOTHING WRONG WITH IT WHY WOULD DO SOOO MANY PEOPLE NOT LIKE IT . I DIDNT LIKE THEM INSULTING HIM THAT IS WRONG BUT THERE IS A RIGHT WAY TO SAY ITS WRONG
eliasleon11 1 year ago
@eliasleon11 you still failed to make any credible point other than "I DIDN'T LIKE THEM INSULTING HIM." Nothing, other than the Bible, which I'm sure you'll whip out (and actually the bible doesn't really validate your "point," or lack thereof, either) could possibly support whatever statement you were trying to make about homosexuality.

@denalihedgehog The sad thing is that Johnny's statement here was about people passing unfortunate and inaccurate judgements that not only hurt him but hurt other people as well. And you have passed judgement about the American population that is unfortunate and untrue. (Besides, Johnny was talking about FRENCH commentators, not Americans. So criticism of America seems completely uncalled for and unrelated.) Johnny brings a fresh angle to figure skating and hope he skates for many years to come.
