There's obviously still a chance that he's gotten lucky, but it's going to be pretty small with that large a sample size. There's a tonne of threads on twoplustwo about it with the actual formulas for working stuff like this out as far as I know.

I also am very very familiar with probability theory and mathematical statistics to a T for I have 2 masters degrees in economics and probability theory. The book fooled by Randomness addresses this point specifically. The fact is when accounting for all possible alternative histories that you will see many people deviate from the mean in a way that looks convincingly like them having skill. Actually this is nothing more than randomness

I definitely think there are plenty of examples of poker players winning large amounts of money over massive sample sizes where ultimately they're not talented enough to account for it. If someone consistently makes decisions that are profitable based on all the different factors that they have to work with, and makes a profit, is that them being fooled, or is it because of skill? Going to check out the book btw, sounds interesting.

All of these are very complicated issues at their core and im sure this book will throw you for a loop as it did me. I love poker and for a long time had the exact same arguement as you about how large sample sizes do the job of eliminating people whos short term winnings were simply a product of variance in the data. This book shows how much of this is simply noise in the data.Great book and great author.

lol this is pretty standard. they play at 2/4 or w/e and then multiple the amt won by 100 or 1000 or w/e. They then settle up afterwards and wire each other the real amt won. that way they dont need to move 500k on to a poker site. DUCY?
