I SEEN LED ZEPIN AT PIRATES WORLD DANIA FLA I WAS ABOUT 13 THAY HAD A SRT OF DRUMS I AM EACH PLAYING FOR THE CROWD OH STAYED FOR ALICE COOPER CONCERT DEAD BABYS
Jim McCarty didn't suck. You are right. Sometimes he made mistakes like we all do. Townsend is an ass, but maybe not a molester. I don't know and I hope that's not true. I've always liked Pete until he said that the Yardbirds were a shambles.
Agreed - a tent in a field is not the best showcase. In an interview on MTV Jeff Beck said that he wished he could see some footage of this performance as the atmosphere was so great - as it was, the Yardbirds had the time of their life as top of the bill. I think The Who MAY have played the same night - but all I wanted was The Yardbirds so can't remember. I can say that I saw the Yardies perform this song many times - much better than the "poppy" McCoys version.
shame there are so many 'haters' take it for what it is, an important piece of Yardbirds history. don't forget this is a live outside broadcast, using recording machinery that we now consider antiquated and the crowd certainly loved it. is this the same show with the infamous early Who performance? is there anymore out there?
Correction to below - it looks like the MacCoys WAS the first version. But not the best - find a copy of the Yardbirds studio recording and compare ...
The Yardbirds recorded My Girl Sloopy on their first EP Five Yardbirds in 1965 - I have a copy and it shows Jeff Beck at his best - it is brilliant. I am pretty sure that the McCoys version (a pale imitation) was released later. This clip does not show the Yardbirds at their best - they had come on as top of the bill at the Richmond Jazz & Blues Festival in 1966 - I woz there! and the atmosphere was electric. I believe this clip was made by Shindig. The early Yardbirds were the best EVER.
Wow! Never seen this performance before. Jeff Beck is playing the old Telecaster that Page ended up with and used with Zeppelin. Love the little fast riff Beck does at about 5:14 just before the end. He was way ahead of his time.
@af4k Yeah, I know. I learned that little riff from istening to Beck back in the 60's. Beck did that sort of stuff in "Jeff's Boogie" and other songs too.
Wikipedia: "Hang On Sloopy" is a song by the pop group The McCoys which was #1 in America in October 1965 and is the official rock song of the state of Ohio and The Ohio State University. It was written by Wes Farrell and Bert Russell and is named for singer Dorothy Sloop, who used the name "Sloopy" on stage.
whats a "slooopie"? i hope they arent talking about a vietnamese woman. someone told me thats what this song is about. Is it? some white person tell me honestly
@Oswulf1 That is probably true. Although I had seen an interview with Keith and he was accompanied by a woman who was not his wife. Could have just been a friend though. He probably wasn't a womanizer, which is good. But he certainly DID have the looks to play that role. ;)
You know, after all this time of watching this clip, I really do think Keith was trying to cover up a shiner he had. haha. And the way he pushes Jeff towards the end, makes me think that maybe Jeff gave him the black eye. Oh well, boys will be boys. ;)
@NotAWarPerson Most classic rocks song used an I-IV-VI (VI-IV-I) progression. Such as F-Bb-C (C-Bb-F). The original Hang On Sloopy, Louie, Louie and a few others.
I remember with Keith Relf was electrocuted... the urban legend went around that he'd died in the bathtub playing his electric guitar. In fact, he had a studio in the basement of his home. There was some kind of ground fault which killed him. The old 220-volt, 50-hertz European wiring had only a hot and neutral... no ground for safety. Something went wrong... what's the odds of getting electrocuted in your home studio?
They all have their Beach Boys outfits on. might be the same guitar that was given to Jimmy Page. One guys playing a Jaguar or Jazzmaster? Beck is the only one up there that looks cool except the overhead clapping.
Bueno es un experimento..hay cosas peores...y esta presentacion es de lo mas divertida...parece que ellos tambien se divertieron a su manera..lo mismo que el publico...
Lousy cover, but nice rare footage of the CLASSIC Yardbirds.
If Jeff would see this now ,his toes would curl,I wonder who pressed the Yardbirds to cover this, they usely had great taste in material.Probably Giorgio Gomelsky.
@Rajamuttu I often myself a lot with YouTube videos, including Yardbirds videos. I'd enjoy myself more if this video hadn't been made or posted, that's all. I love the Yardbirds, but this one is just horrid.
@endora60 No, and they made a mistake releasing their recording, which couldn't touch the McCoys' version. But watch and hear this live performance, any you'll see how they could turn even this into a rave-up. These old live clips show them at their best.
