  • I SEEN LED ZEPIN AT PIRATES WORLD DANIA FLA I WAS ABOUT 13 THAY HAD A SRT OF DRUMS I AM EACH PLAYING FOR THE CROWD OH STAYED FOR ALICE COOPER CONCERT DEAD BABYS

  • i like it just to see jeff beck on those times

  • Jim McCarty didn't suck. You are right. Sometimes he made mistakes like we all do. Townsend is an ass, but maybe not a molester. I don't know and I hope that's not true. I've always liked Pete until he said that the Yardbirds were a shambles.

  • Awesome!

  • I love the Yardbirds.

  • What a mess. Horrible.

  • great cover

  • It's good.......inspiring *

  • it looks as if the Beach Boys' wardrobe manager dressed them. :)

    Still a great post though.

  • The Who were at this Festival as well. Keith Moon destroyed his drumkit (I mean by one of the most killer drum solos you will ever see).

  • wow the screaming is just like the screaming at tokio hotel xD

damn the youth is just used to crap xD

  • Danelectro bass

  • Agreed - a tent in a field is not the best showcase. In an interview on MTV Jeff Beck said that he wished he could see some footage of this performance as the atmosphere was so great - as it was, the Yardbirds had the time of their life as top of the bill. I think The Who MAY have played the same night - but all I wanted was The Yardbirds so can't remember. I can say that I saw the Yardies perform this song many times - much better than the "poppy" McCoys version.

  • shame there are so many 'haters' take it for what it is, an important piece of Yardbirds history. don't forget this is a live outside broadcast, using recording machinery that we now consider antiquated and the crowd certainly loved it. is this the same show with the infamous early Who performance? is there anymore out there?

  • Correction to below - it looks like the MacCoys WAS the first version. But not the best - find a copy of the Yardbirds studio recording and compare ...

  • The Yardbirds recorded My Girl Sloopy on their first EP Five Yardbirds in 1965 - I have a copy and it shows Jeff Beck at his best - it is brilliant. I am pretty sure that the McCoys version (a pale imitation) was released later. This clip does not show the Yardbirds at their best - they had come on as top of the bill at the Richmond Jazz & Blues Festival in 1966 - I woz there! and the atmosphere was electric. I believe this clip was made by Shindig. The early Yardbirds were the best EVER.

  • God this is painfully bad!

  • I like the orig version better.

  • I remember reading an interview with Keith Relf, saying that they did this song sort of as a joke. Is there any validity to that?

  • Wow! Never seen this performance before. Jeff Beck is playing the old Telecaster that Page ended up with and used with Zeppelin. Love the little fast riff Beck does at about 5:14 just before the end. He was way ahead of his time.

  • @spyguys that's just a standard Beckie pull off / descending scale. Great though...

  • @af4k Yeah, I know. I learned that little riff from istening to Beck back in the 60's. Beck did that sort of stuff in "Jeff's Boogie" and other songs too.

  • Wikipedia: "Hang On Sloopy" is a song by the pop group The McCoys which was #1 in America in October 1965 and is the official rock song of the state of Ohio and The Ohio State University. It was written by Wes Farrell and Bert Russell and is named for singer Dorothy Sloop, who used the name "Sloopy" on stage.

  • whats a "slooopie"? i hope they arent talking about a vietnamese woman. someone told me thats what this song is about. Is it? some white person tell me honestly

  • it is a good job the girls made a lot of noise ,they are not as good as i remember ,

  • I kinda like this... almost has an early Beatles... "Shake it up Baby."

  • esta chida esta rola

  • whoa wait isn't this by the McCoys? is this just like a cover?

  • Jeff Beck looks very bored

This has no ........well, no rick derringer

  • You may burn me alive but it's crazy cool. Reminds me the early Stones Station hotel days!

  • God that's awful :0)

  • Yes, it is Jeff Beck, he's on the right. The singer is cute, though not the best of vocals here.

  • heeeeeeeeeey lupeeee!!!..............(8)

  • why do i get the vibe that the singer is only in it to get laid? :)

  • @PersistenceMusic You tell me. He had a lovely wife back in England, and I don't think he was that kind of guy.

  • @Oswulf1 That is probably true. Although I had seen an interview with Keith and he was accompanied by a woman who was not his wife. Could have just been a friend though. He probably wasn't a womanizer, which is good. But he certainly DID have the looks to play that role. ;)

  • self-indulgent garbage.... I still don't understand what people saw in these guys

  • You know, after all this time of watching this clip, I really do think Keith was trying to cover up a shiner he had. haha. And the way he pushes Jeff towards the end, makes me think that maybe Jeff gave him the black eye. Oh well, boys will be boys. ;)

  • @wouldntyoulike2know Maybe that is why he started to wear sunglasses or shades for awhile.

  • @britfrenir Maybe. Or just because he knew it would make him look extra amazing. :)

  • It looks like they have stolen the Beach Boys' stage shirts. The Beach Birds?

  • Nice Tele!

  • The chicks are digging it, dancing and all, so I guess it's good! :o)

  • The chords sound so familiar. It sounds like another song used that ta nan tan tan nan nan part.

  • @NotAWarPerson Most classic rocks song used an I-IV-VI (VI-IV-I) progression. Such as F-Bb-C (C-Bb-F). The original Hang On Sloopy, Louie, Louie and a few others.

  • @Drag2hand I think you mean I-IV-V.

  • @bfish89ryuhayabusa Yeah, I, IV, V

  • dear IDIOT thats Jeff Beck on guitar

  • I remember with Keith Relf was electrocuted... the urban legend went around that he'd died in the bathtub playing his electric guitar. In fact, he had a studio in the basement of his home. There was some kind of ground fault which killed him. The old 220-volt, 50-hertz European wiring had only a hot and neutral... no ground for safety. Something went wrong... what's the odds of getting electrocuted in your home studio?

  • Not the best version , but at least they did their own version instead of just copying the McCoys version .

  • They all have their Beach Boys outfits on. might be the same guitar that was given to Jimmy Page. One guys playing a Jaguar or Jazzmaster? Beck is the only one up there that looks cool except the overhead clapping.

  • This does notring true as a Yardbirds song.Mind you Keith without sunglasses cool !!!!!!!!!!

  • LoL! Not a vocal group..by any means!!

But it is fun! And on an island where the kids were starved for a taste of what was happening in the states!! Thanks for posting this!! ;-)

  • who cares, everybody was havin' fun-everybody's a critic....this was 45 years ago

  • Bueno es un experimento..hay cosas peores...y esta presentacion es de lo mas divertida...parece que ellos tambien se divertieron a su manera..lo mismo que el publico...

  • Lousy cover, but nice rare footage of the CLASSIC Yardbirds.

If Jeff would see this now ,his toes would curl,I wonder who pressed the Yardbirds to cover this, they usely had great taste in material.Probably Giorgio Gomelsky.

  • was your uncle in the vibrations the strangeloves or rick and the raiders

  • copyed my uncles song

  • Not a good fit...they were wicked cool(over, upwards) but some ol' producer was tryin for some lame teen- beat sound here out of them

  • McCoys > Yardbirds

  • The McCoys version much, much better !!!

  • eu keria q a minha juventude tivesse sido na inglaterra na decada de 60.

  • The McCoys do a much much better job.

  • I agree even though I'm a yardsbird fan.

They seem to be trying to meld this song with the Beatles' Twist and Shout....it doesn't work.

  • this is a horrible version of the song

  • He is completely addicted, it shows in his eyes

  • Il est completement drogué, ça se voit à ses yeux

  • This just isn't a Yardbirds kind of song.

  • @endora60 Maybe, maybe not. Of course, the Yardbirds ARE doing it, so that makes it a Yardbird's kind of song by definition.

What you don't get is that this is FUN ... and FUNNY.

Enjoy yourself a bit before you die, huh?

  • @Rajamuttu I often myself a lot with YouTube videos, including Yardbirds videos. I'd enjoy myself more if this video hadn't been made or posted, that's all. I love the Yardbirds, but this one is just horrid.

  • @endora60 No, and they made a mistake releasing their recording, which couldn't touch the McCoys' version. But watch and hear this live performance, any you'll see how they could turn even this into a rave-up. These old live clips show them at their best.

  • lol this is the reason eric clapton left lol

  • IT was probably one of them, but mostly because of the song for your love

  • @sensai61

this rendition? your comment is right on target! ;)

  • @sensai61

nah, if they tried something like this while he was in the band i think he would have became a murderer of his band mates...

  • I heard this song on my flight from SFO

to India Feb 2009 ,to pick up my wife just an awesome cover better than the original . I played it over an over at least 20 times .

  • is eric clatop or jimmy page here?

  • No, it's the one "in between": Jeff Beck! ;-)

  • Great video.and a great cover ..If you have more put it up there music should be shared what a great band and a great gift

of blues and rock with lots of soul

  • @JimMcCartyandCo ---The best of the -3-

  • @JimMcCartyandCo

the one under whom page had to start as a bassist if i'm not mistaken, then shortly afterwards take rythm duties and then for a short time they had the godlike double lead guitar of beck and page.

  • @JimMcCartyandCo Isn't that Top Topham?

  • @milagromac

    neither, girl, it's beck

  • Keith! My husband looks so fantastic here. ;)

  • Oh Wow !!! This is so cool...I hadn't seen this clip before! I didn't know the YardBirds covered the McCoys' Hang on Sloopy ! Great drumming Jim ! What a show man !!! *****

  • It's so weird to see the Yardbirds do this song.

  • O-H-I-O

  • My love Jeff Beck is so young in this vid, that's really rare!!

And I really want to say Keith is a great singer, that's sad about his death.

  • It is sad that Keith had to walk the Silver Tightrope so early......

  • Jeff Beck!!!

  • Well mean by anarchist but is just because everybody in the concert was out of control... and got craizy about them ...And I like much this concert, they are really great band.. people can critized their clothes, and song but even though they such original and unique...(sorry if my spelling is bad)..

  • oh no, your spelling is fine, I just didn't understand the word. :D I understand now though. Thanks for clearing that up. :D

  • Besides the obvious studio push to play certain songs, good or bad, they look like a British version of the Beach Boys the way they are dressed.

  • Omg did I get drunk and say THIS

  • While I don't think that much of this version of the McCoy's song, I'm glad I got to see this because it used to be that finding any Yardbirds material at all, even on vinyl, was a chore. Just seeing Jeff Beck at such a young age was worth it just in itself.

This definitely gives one a feel for what rock shows back in that period in the UK looked like. A cool artifact. This.

  • I like is anarquica....I love keith..

  • what does "anarquica" mean? I am always intrigued to learn new words. lol. And by the way, I love Keith too. <3

  • This is the lamest version ever of a great pre-drug era song; the band seems intent on destroying it, and nearly succeeds; Jeff Beck at this stage was evidently no match for the teenaged Derringer, and could as well have gone to the washroom during this number, for all he contributes here; but the singer really must get the glory for taxing the audience's aural senses and patience so recklessly.

  • i'm not so critical of this song yet i am not fond of it either. the problem: the yardbirds were pushed by label/management to be a "hits" band & that was not where they were at in their heads (beach boys style striped outfits?). "sloopy" was not their song choice - while rick made it work & it was a credible vehicle for him, the yardbirds were about extended jams & feedback, experimentation, etc. (none of which is demonstrated here - genuinely representative material is elsewhere on youtube).

  • Listen to their first album or the live side of Having A Rave Up. This IS the way they'd extend their material. At the time, they weren't about long solos so much as they were about creating excitment through dynamics.

  • Keith looks so cute in this..^-^.I dont know what it is

  • Its his hair in his face, that is so hot when his hair gets in his eyes all like that. I think he is adorable. :D

  • You are so right :D lol, he is adorable

  • I love his dimples. He has to have the cutest dimples I've ever seen. :D

  • While I don't think that much of this version of the McCoy's song, I'm glad I got to see this because it used to be that finding any Yardbirds material at all, even on vinyl, was a chore. Just seeing Jeff Beck at such a young age was worth it just in itself.

  • The Guitar solo's in this song are amazing!!!Great song!!!!

    I love the Yard Birds!

  • I'm not saying he's better in general, I'm just saying I think the McCoys version is a lot more professional and has a lot more emotion. Just my opinion though, that is the point of the comments page, for people to express their opinions.

  • Very cool. Like this version quite a bit. What's up with Keith's left eye? He get punched? Infection? Allergies?

  • That's what happens when you get punched by your lead guitarist at 4:57, then punch him back at 4:59...and if you carry on this "little game" shows after shows... ;-)

I think this is just due to the bad image quality, that's all!...

  • This version is shit. The McCoys version is so much better.

  • Du musst beachten: Das ist eine einmalige, historische Live-Aufnahme, und darf nicht als Konkurrenz zur Version der McCoys betrachtet werden...!

  • this is sick; the mccoys all the way

  • Alguien desafina...

  • buenisimo video!!

    gracias por pasarlo!

    un abrazo!

    desde Argentina!

    :)

  • Great!!!!

  • Great!!!!!

  • Amazing. Jeff Beck was so far ahead of his time.

  • Jeff Beck looks like he's 15 years old in this video.

  • Thanks for this video! I love how the Ybirds would improvise songs like this and make them so damn creative!! wonderful!

  • Yes, and a good cover.

  • Incredible footage! This is a gift.
