the recces (South African special forces) didnt eat or sleep for 5 days as part of their selection... well dont know about nowadays but up there with the best in old days. experience > then training and bet your avg SA policman has seen more action then most.

This means in situations of high stress they will overcome, after weak r weeded out they r put through more technical aspects of training

1) These guys are not only highly trained operators, they still work on investigations much like regular police officers... yet they are trained to similar standards to the SAS CT level.

I've never heard that one before, however if you look for Chris Ryan's Elite Police Unit documentary he says the Polish Elite Police are most like the SAS. Go search it on YouTube and have you forgotten the South African Recces, Seyerat Metkal, Delta is all just talk at the end od the day.

You have to bear in mind these are not ordinary police... 99% of ordinary cops dont make it into this unit. Theyre just not good enough.. the same as soldiers who try out for Delta, SAS, SEALs.... these guys are probably closer to being special forces operators than cops... the training is based on SA special Forces (originally called Reconaissance Commandos or Recces for short) selection and training.
This is not a pissing contest this is just a selection phase that just happens to have a colour balance that isn't to your liking. If you had to attend all the selections you'll see it has nothing to do with colour, but rather skill and endurance. The mission that they do is where the lines are drawn. Just cause they do CQB and skydive doesnt mean its soldier training its just another way to get to work for these guys.
Looks very tough, but some of the stuff there is blatantly just giving the guys a hard time for the sake of it. I know that is a test in itself, but training and selection should be relevant. Secondly the SA police have more chance of being killed than most other police forces in the world besides maybe Colombia and Iraq. I watched this documentary and found the task force to be amazing. The things they are asked to do on a routine basis are what other law enforcement agencies (and military special forces) train for on a worst case scenario. I could not believe how violent their job is.
And on the topic of training, I do have to say that much of their training is simply unrealistic as to what they do. They do not 'train as they fight' as much as they try to do manly type tasks to get into an exclusive club. But if it works for them then who I am I to judge.
you are judging their training by what you saw in the video.You must realise that a lot of the stuff you saw on the video is from the "vasbyt" stage of the training.This is the initial stage to weed out those who are not psychologically and physically tough enough to continue.Once you have sorted the men from the mice,then you can resume with the more specific,skills-focussed training.
Well this initial phase of training is as tough as any premier infantry unit, but that is precisely my point. This Special Task Force is more of a SWAT/counter-terrorism team than a unit that would be assigned to fight a military. The long marches, scarce food and severe sleep deprivation would be appropriate training for the British Royal Commandos or the US Army Rangers. But these guys are not given the same tasks that those types of units are.
I hope that you do not see this as an attempt to denigrate these brave men who fight and die so that others may live. Their willingness to put their lives at risk for their countrymen is admirable. I simply see this type of mission creep all over the place where the training becomes more about being a 'tough guy' and less about accomplishing the serious tasks at hand.
Next I suspect that we will see qualifications for entry into an elite unit becoming that of eating hot sauce without sweating, or holding your liquor well. It is becoming patently ridiculous.

Yes I agree with you there, these guys see a lot of combat. However how much of that combat involves shortages of food, long grueling marches, and shortages of sleep. I bet none of it. As I have said repeatedly before I respect these guys and their dangerous job to save the lives of innocent people. But their training and selection process are as relevant to their mission as it would be to a bunch of firemen.
Well, first off, the sleep and food deprivation is both a test of psychological toughness and mental/physical training. It's a way of weeding out the weak.
Second, these guys apparently end up working sometimes 3 or 4 days straight all over the country without any sleep. So the training is necessary in order for them to remain alert and motivated each and every time they go out no matter how exhausted of tired they may be. Lives depend on it.
the exercsises are not ment to train them for the real situations (well some of them) but the ones with the long marches andnot eating is all about building there stamina

After Winston Cherchill was captured in SA by the Komandoes. In honour of their sacrifice and fierce fighting ability he made this unit during WW2 we had them before.

The average bobby does not even carry a firearm. While they are brave and do a great job, it is a totally different type of policing. The UK police have dedicated Firearms Units (SO19), who are proficient, but not in this way, but then they dont need to be.They train for what they are required to do and face in the UK. This selection and training is based on SADF Special Forces selection, but toned down a fair bit. I saw the whole program when it aired back in 2001. Awesome!

Hi Guys -- I'm the Cameraman/ Director who filmed the Special Task Force series. I spent 3 years in SA and filmed a trilogy. The STF are the hardest working and bravest unit I've ever covered. It doesn't matter your colour or creed -- once your in the unit, you're a brother. Since then, I've filmed with Colombian SWAT and 20 SWAT teams in the USA: but for hi speed/ dangerous ops/ and heavily armed criminals, SA tops it all.

I would argue that comment.
It is impossible that N Ireland has the crime rate we have here in SA. (eg ave, 52 murders a day).
As a result our Task Team members are constantly in real life situations and not just training.
Also it is fact that we have trained French, German and many other teams from around the world.
A part of the their proud history is that the SA Task Team has never lost a hostage in a hostage situation EVER!
With the primary focus being on criminal activity unlike the RUC.

Further more more while I have a lot of respect for the RUC, their focus was to try and stabilize a country at war with itself.
With many from the "other" side seeing the RUC as the opposition.
As a result many RUC members lost their lives (about 300) mostly killed by the Provisional IRC.
The RUC and SA Task Force are 2 vastly different organizations.
Both for whom I have respect!

Legends.. absolute legends. As for those who think that these cops arent as good as their western counterparts.. well, you need to realise this:
1) These guys are not only highly trained operators, they still work on investigations much like regular police officers... yet they are trained to similar standards to the SAS CT level.
2) They dont face average western citizens or petty criminals - they face crazy mofo's armed with everything from AK47's to RPG-7's, R1A1's to R4's / R5's and beyond..

I've never heard that one before, however if you look for Chris Ryan's Elite Police Unit documentary he says the Polish Elite Police are most like the SAS. Go search it on YouTube and have you forgotten the South African Recces, Seyerat Metkal, Delta is all just talk at the end od the day.

I also spent some time with some ex-selous scouts from Zim who became gun-dealers & supplied the Congo with ammo when they were having their wars, another forgotten bunch

You have to bear in mind these are not ordinary police... 99% of ordinary cops dont make it into this unit. Theyre just not good enough.. the same as soldiers who try out for Delta, SAS, SEALs.... these guys are probably closer to being special forces operators than cops... the training is based on SA special Forces (originally called Reconaissance Commandos or Recces for short) selection and training.

Looks very tough, but some of the stuff there is blatantly just giving the guys a hard time for the sake of it. I know that is a test in itself, but training and selection should be relevant. Am serving Brit Para btw, and I have met some of the Task Force Guys, really good fellas, they have a very tough job.

Firstly, the training is not only about physical but mental as well ok? Secondly the SA police have more chance of being killed than most other police forces in the world besides maybe Colombia and Iraq. You guys have got no idea what they go through each and every day so shut your f*cking mouths. These guys do it for love of their country- they get paid sh*t and yet they do it. I watched this documentary and found the task force to be amazing. The things they are asked to do on a routine basis are what other law enforcement agencies (and military special forces) train for on a worst case scenario. I could not believe how violent their job is.

you are judging their training by what you saw in the video.You must realise that a lot of the stuff you saw on the video is from the "vasbyt" stage of the training.This is the initial stage to weed out those who are not psychologically and physically tough enough to continue.Once you have sorted the men from the mice,then you can resume with the more specific,skills-focussed training.

Well this initial phase of training is as tough as any premier infantry unit, but that is precisely my point. This Special Task Force is more of a SWAT/counter-terrorism team than a unit that would be assigned to fight a military. The long marches, scarce food and severe sleep deprivation would be appropriate training for the British Royal Commandos or the US Army Rangers. But these guys are not given the same tasks that those types of units are.

I hope that you do not see this as an attempt to denigrate these brave men who fight and die so that others may live. Their willingness to put their lives at risk for their countrymen is admirable. I simply see this type of mission creep all over the place where the training becomes more about being a 'tough guy' and less about accomplishing the serious tasks at hand.

Yes I agree with you there, these guys see a lot of combat. However how much of that combat involves shortages of food, long grueling marches, and shortages of sleep. I bet none of it. As I have said repeatedly before I respect these guys and their dangerous job to save the lives of innocent people. But their training and selection process are as relevant to their mission as it would be to a bunch of firemen.

Well, first off, the sleep and food deprivation is both a test of psychological toughness and mental/physical training. It's a way of weeding out the weak.
Second, these guys apparently end up working sometimes 3 or 4 days straight all over the country without any sleep. So the training is necessary in order for them to remain alert and motivated each and every time they go out no matter how exhausted of tired they may be. Lives depend on it.

After Winston Cherchill was captured in SA by the Komandoes. In honour of their sacrifice and fierce fighting ability he made this unit during WW2 we had them before.
And please keep in mind this is a police unit not a military one. Just police

The average bobby does not even carry a firearm. While they are brave and do a great job, it is a totally different type of policing. The UK police have dedicated Firearms Units (SO19), who are proficient, but not in this way, but then they dont need to be.They train for what they are required to do and face in the UK. This selection and training is based on SADF Special Forces selection, but toned down a fair bit. I saw the whole program when it aired back in 2001. Awesome!

Hi Guys -- I'm the Cameraman/ Director who filmed the Special Task Force series. I spent 3 years in SA and filmed a trilogy. The STF are the hardest working and bravest unit I've ever covered. It doesn't matter your colour or creed -- once your in the unit, you're a brother. Since then, I've filmed with Colombian SWAT and 20 SWAT teams in the USA: but for hi speed/ dangerous ops/ and heavily armed criminals, SA tops it all.
