they would wear pants wool socks that sort of thing all based on weather but they avoided lower body armor because the shield worked well enough and they prefered the mobility. There were a form of shin armor that strapped onto the sandals but i dont think it was used often at all.
@123DROCK I know right,I just wonder what those traitors think to themselves when they decide to take the seat as emperor LOL "Im going to bring this empire even more glory and become the best emperor of roman history" ..........next thing you know, empire splits apart and barbarians run amok
@123DROCK Was there any poet, scientist, mathematician, engineer born north and west of Rome? In 500 years? Do I miss something mate? Why when the Empire disintegrated the east moved forward and the west "went backwards". Did the west went backwards really or it simply remained in the same cultural level it was within the Roman Empire? Get the basics?
@123DROCK Roman Empire was from 30 B.C. to 400 B.C. - from there on we gradually talk about Eastern Roman Empire that lasted of course much more than that. Romans did notthing to expand or improve any Greek ideas for the VERY SIMPLE REASON that 99% of Roman culture and civlisation was happening south and east of Rome. Now you tell me why.
Thus the legion's appearence while far more standardised compared to the earlier Greek city-state armies (where the citizens were bying their own armours), it would be still far from the near-perfect standardised look of modern re-enactment legions. Legions of Rome would still look very much like a motley crew.
What re-enactors tend to forget is that the Lorica Segmentata never became the main Roman armour but was rather used by particular legions mainly of the west. In the east (as well as many parts of west), the main armour continued to be the chain as well as scale mail which were more easily fabricated in mass production style and offered satisfactory protection. Lorica Segmentata derivatives (but not identical) were also used occasionaly by later Eastern Roman troops.
Anyway, the Lorica Segmentata was an extremely old design which was notably used in Mycenean Greece (1800 to 1200 B.C.) i.e. more than 1000 years prior to the appearence in the Roman army. The Roman Lorica Segmentata segments that were found were particularly thin and hence this means that it was meant to be used over a leather or chain mail under-armour. Modern re-enactors make the mistake of making it as a "main-armour" which was not.
@123DROCK I am sorry mate but Rome was not exactly a civilisation. We can talk about Roman culture but we cannot talk about Roman civilisation - that was the civilisation of Greeks. We have to talk about Greek civilisation on which Roman culture was based. To be added that Romans not only did not add up themselves anything on that civilisation but even Roman culture, letters, science itself was largely produced by ethnic Greeks Roman citizens. The culture of Rome was produced south&east of Rome
@123DROCK Nero actually benefited the empire in the long run because he ordered wars against the persians, which actually went well. It wasn't until the crisis of the third century that rome began falling apart. Until Marcus Aurelius, the Empire was quite Stable.
Nope, that's the effect of having an Anglo-centric view of history. The longbow is a very basic and ancient bow design, Otzi the Icemen from 3300 BCE carried a yew longbow, practically identical to the English weapon. It's just that no culture at this point used it en masse in battle like the English did later (well that's not completely accurate either, the Nubians did actually, but they weren't that well known)
@123DROCK But then there would never have been such great emperors as Augustus, Hadrian and Marcus Auralius. Agree Nero was crazy, but he made Rome what it was architecturally. Much of the Rome we think of today is AD stuff.
@123DROCK it hadsome issues though, namely, chainmail had no gaps between the plates and you could get UNDER the plates in a segmentata, so it was fairly good, but not perfect.
Great Vid! I am a Year3 teacher in UK and would love to use your video in class with the children to get them to add their own voice overs, would this be ok?It will not affect the video shown on you tubue at all, and would be used for educational reasons on our school blog. Thank you in advance!

roman army aws awsome but i like the korean army better back then wen they were in war wit the japs and yeah they didnt bring much in to civilization but the generals were smart and our archery was efficient and yeah not hight tech but still
@nior000 It's better designed because it's lighter and more flexible, whilst offering around the same amount of protection. Plate armour is much lighter than chain-mail, and the multiple pieces of armour mean than it's not all on the shoulders.
By the fall of Rome 80% of its armed forces were barbarian mercanerys! that was a deciding factor her army was no longer as effiecient over extended and internal problems caused its ultimate destruction
too bad they were crushed by the barbarians if they were still part of our world today we would be over 1000 years advanced imagine their armor during the middle ages that would be cool
kelvar armor with a helmet maybe a riotshield. And a uzi a 9 mm in my holster and m60 :). And for the final touch a humvee with a grenade launcher mounted. Where is the time maching XD
The armour was actually quite light, at least lighter than chainmail. The thing that makes his equipment heavy is the large shield. Belive me, i have worn this armour myself.
and remember back in the day recycling was a big thing, and before the maridian(i believe thats the spelling not sure) reforms each soldier had to pay for their equipment, the ones with the better equipment usually being in the front line, go figure
yeah thanks for telling me bout the name i remembered later, but you are wrong about the equipment, ultimately the best equipment soldiers did go in the back but that was because they were bodyguards or more important, but for the comon soldier after the marian reform the best equipment went first, otherwise alot of the poorer soldiers would be lost way to fast and most likely rout, starting a riot among the rest of the troops
Pre.marian where not divided by clases, but by experience in the battlefield, hastati being the newest recruits(first to third large battle) principes being more experienced(third batlle and on) and the triarii being the elite veterans, of course the first where the ones in greater number and with greater losses, and rarely would the triarii have to fight, losing few and so needing less, leaving most up and coming soldiers to remain as principes for a long time
@tacotony24 Wrong. Philip of Macedon created history's first paid professionally-trained standing army. Philip's son of course, was Alexander the Great.
you're right that the Roman Army is not the first professional standing army but you are wrong because the Greco-Mecedonian Army is not the first professional army
Most historians believe that the armies of Sumer and Akkad 3500-2200 BC are the first professional armies. The armies are at a full-time basis and are paid and equipped at royal expense
it was a great replic of a shield and equipment but i think the part of begind of the helmet si too close to the ears is more at level of the neck and the arms because that dont protect of an atack from begind...but all the other stuff was great!!!
Yeah but these soldiers were trained to carry twice that load. Even their swords were lighter than the training ones. They may have been a little out of breath, however still capable to fight effectivley. Plus when on the battle field a sort of sheild wall was used and marched towards the enemy at a slow pace or probablly wait for the enemy to come to them.
imagine you walking for tens of miles a day with a 80 pound heavy kit the romans carried, by the time they would have gotten to the battlefield they would have been exhausted even before battle
Its called a Gambeson, it was quite common throughout history to wear such padding under armour, especially in the Medieval period. However, soldiers were wearing these way before that.

Yeah, I agree. It was the Equestrian classes that let the Romans down. They were reckless, arrogant and aristocratic - a bad combination if you ask me... But I think there were some exceptions.
@whowantsabighug That one was my little brother screwing around on my account... I've since disabled the login on that computer... Srry for him being a little brat...
@LvpvsRomanvs I dont know, with the new lethality of weapons a much smaller army could be considered the mightiest, and nearly all the countries in the world have an army that would have beaten Romes. If you mean mightiest compared to other contries of it's time, then that is very hard to translate to modern day.
Besides the jingling and the alck of ability to look down yeah. It was alot cheaper and quicker to make than chainmail but I also feel it gives a special look to the roman army. A unique look which imediatly identifies them as a roman.
It makes you feel alot safer to because you are. theres nothing like knowing if a sword hits you it will all be fine but if you hit the other guy(unarmoured) he will die. haha
from where can i buy this antient rome equipment,i want the replicant to the made from a authentic material just like in antient times, can someone give a link so i can buy it online?
The Roman citizens were too much rich to do the hard life of the legionary, they paid mercenaries to fight their wars at the end.
The Empire didn't have legions anymore, the soldiers haven't lorica, gladius, scutum, pilum, they weren't legionaries anymore, they were Barbarians as those against they fought.
one reason is because the romans had let in too many groups of people disloyal to the empire such as the goths and the huns, they evan made the goths part of the roman army for a while which taught them roman tactics and gave them roman equipment.
I stand corrected! Most of what I know about the Ancient gauls,Britanians, celts etc is based on the writings. Of Romans like Tacitus I've read a little of him I'm know expert.
@Kalydosos Well it wasn't exactly the barbarian only who beat the roman army and made the civilization crumple, but they were a big part of it. Having a strong enemy as the barbarians in today's Germany, did pound a civilization that grew too big and was split in two, the internal structure of the roman civilization could not deal with an everlasting enemy in their conquest with the situation in their cities and politic getting ripped apart.
Actually the army was weak too. By the fall of Rome the military was made up mostly of barbarian fighters and no legionary as we recognize them was around.
@Kalydosos They broke the disipline and morale of the army due losses over time, the enemy knew how to break their formation, then the enemys broke these in battle, the romans were as good as doomed.
that was sweet i bet everone that reads this watched this video because medevil times were the best i love playing acting out and watching these things awesome video

google-romen armer for sale-type that.
rainbowsixODST 2 years ago
holy shit that must be tiring just to wear all of that equipment and they had to march up to 25 - 30 miles on roman highways.

That's how empires are made, my son. :)

that lorica segmentata was really light and if you dident look down you wouldent even know you had it on
tecna64 2 years ago
Besides the jingling and the alck of ability to look down yeah. It was alot cheaper and quicker to make than chainmail but I also feel it gives a special look to the roman army. A unique look which imediatly identifies them as a roman.
mokkan06 2 years ago
he looks like a packmule with all that equipment
sondreus24 3 years ago
Good description. After the reforms of Marius the Romans wanted to limit the baggage train and other armies they encountered called them mules

i thought centurions had a choice? but wasnt all legionarys helmets made out of bronze
whowantsabighug 3 years ago
I not 100% sure about choice but earlier back the bronze helmet was standard, until the new helmets as you saw were introduced.
Commie62 3 years ago
I have to say that the guys looks pretty cool in his gear.
anthlocal 3 years ago 8
yea but anyone looks great in full armour and it makes u feel great
whowantsabighug 3 years ago
It makes you feel alot safer to because you are. theres nothing like knowing if a sword hits you it will all be fine but if you hit the other guy(unarmoured) he will die. haha
aries772 2 years ago
Really? Interesting fact! Is there a reason for it, or is it just tradition?
000majorwinters000 3 years ago
Thats what you need for paintball protection.
Chompa901 3 years ago

what was the scarf and apron made from?
prd2bcrzy 3 years ago
no leg and hip protection?
kwstikas82 3 years ago
the legs were usually bare to increase the meanuverability the legion needed but was protected by the samnite-style shield that he carried
BlazenRocker93 3 years ago
Where can you buy the padded undercoat and scarf?
tawtu 3 years ago
scarf isnt really part of the uniform soldiers just wore them to stop the armour rubbing

How did mad northern barbarians beat such a good, diciplined Army. I can't believe that it was just because the Roman state was weak.
Kalydosos 4 years ago 9
the good army became corrupted the disiplined people got spoiled and generals became ambitious.. sad story really :(
yapxingguan 4 years ago 10
well, they got sloppy. Barbarians came in and destroyed the place.
Turboman1999 4 years ago
The Roman citizens were too much rich to do the hard life of the legionary, they paid mercenaries to fight their wars at the end.
The Empire didn't have legions anymore, the soldiers haven't lorica, gladius, scutum, pilum, they weren't legionaries anymore, they were Barbarians as those against they fought.
xilpix 3 years ago 6
I understand you. I think the a similar thing happened with Ancient Eygptian armies as well. 26Th Dynasty onwards mercenaries were heavily used.
Kalydosos 3 years ago
one reason is because the romans had let in too many groups of people disloyal to the empire such as the goths and the huns, they evan made the goths part of the roman army for a while which taught them roman tactics and gave them roman equipment.
DecimusAquila 3 years ago 3
how do you know that the gauls where barbarians?
they had there own relegion language their own kings etc...
if you want to know what are barbarians try searching for the Huns
yordi193 3 years ago
I stand corrected! Most of what I know about the Ancient gauls,Britanians, celts etc is based on the writings. Of Romans like Tacitus I've read a little of him I'm know expert.
Kalydosos 3 years ago
In order to know if gauls are barbarians, one must first as himself, what makes one a barbarian?..... I am so wise yey
amadeus987 2 years ago
to the romans you where a barbarian if you wear pants
amnb1234 2 years ago
really??
amadeus987 2 years ago
well good to know i'm not barbarian for them right? xD
spicki2 2 years ago
@Kalydosos Well it wasn't exactly the barbarian only who beat the roman army and made the civilization crumple, but they were a big part of it. Having a strong enemy as the barbarians in today's Germany, did pound a civilization that grew too big and was split in two, the internal structure of the roman civilization could not deal with an everlasting enemy in their conquest with the situation in their cities and politic getting ripped apart.
Isshiresshi 1 year ago
@Kalydosos
Actually the army was weak too. By the fall of Rome the military was made up mostly of barbarian fighters and no legionary as we recognize them was around.
leeham991 1 year ago
@Kalydosos They broke the disipline and morale of the army due losses over time, the enemy knew how to break their formation, then the enemys broke these in battle, the romans were as good as doomed.
pikathomas 1 year ago
Yep the Romans had the best stuff at the time I think the best stuff befor gunpowder came in to war.
