Saw ISN'T gory, it's all hype, it's too polished and hollywood to be graphic. Now there are much worse films such as House on The Edge of The Park, Last House on The Left (1972), Maniac (1980), The Untold Story, Cannibal Ferox, Cannibal Holocaust, New York Ripper etc. that are much worse. Yeah The Thing is 80's. Anything Carpenter in that time was golden. The Shining was amazing, but really nothing compared to the novel in terms of terror, though Kubrick tapped into that claustrophobia more effectively than the novel did.

The Thing is actually based on a veeeery old short story called Who Goes There!?

Agreed on all fronts. I thought Saw was a breath of fresh air, as bland as the series became after the first film.

I found The Ring to be pretty good (having not seen the original beforehand). Other than that yes I'd agree, horror just hasn't been horror in a long time.

What kind of 80's horror do you like, just outta curiosity. I remember Pumpkinhead giving me nightmares as a kid. (Btw i was born in '89 but I grew up watching an earlier generation of film)

Tbh I didn't like this movie at all. And though you're comparing it to PA and Saw, it doesn't really relate to either of them besides the people who made it. The whole movie is basically a cheap knockoff of Poltergeist. Token psychic, token kid stuck in another dimension, token parent sent to retrieve him, token evil spirits who want to take over, etc etc etc. Tiptoe through the tulips? Please. She tried to quietly tell her friends what happened but I overheard her. It grossed me out i fucken moved to another seat cause i started to smell the stench. I dont know what happened after but i'm guessing she had the help of her friends as they ran out to the restrooms to clean up and change

It really didn't, it implied that the man killed his wife. Sure, it used to be that horror movies with a 'happy' ending were a dime a dozen, but these days so long as you know the plot you can pretty much guess the ending. They all end with it seeming as though things will end well, then 'twisting' it even though it isn't a twist anymore, or outright badly. I don't want all horror movies to end well, but if they mixed it up, it would make the endings more of a shock when they did {c}

I didn't think it was really all that scary. Just jumpy. A little bit of suspense, the ending was kind of clever, but overall it wasn't all that great imo. Some of the content that they intended to be scary was just pretty ridiculous.
