Cant believe this is on youtube, but if some random unknown person makes a video with music from an MGM band it gets removed instantly.. pathetic. Fantastic movie btw, have seen many times before.
Most people are completely UN-aware of the fact that this was Spielbergs very first Movie. Prior to this, he had a couple of Columbo's and somthing else under his belt. BUT, this was his first feature length movie. And still a Classic, in my humble Opinion. It has ALWAYS been in my personal TOP 10 List. I would LOVE for him to do a complete top to bottom re-make if for no other reason than to bring it up to date. Even in it's original form, a movie
I remember as a kid how this movie made me terrified on semis on the highway and that one of them would try to run me down. STILL one of the best movies ever made!
I can't believe I found this just by google searching the words "truck terrorizes orange car, desert, classic movie" ... this movie was pretty awesome when I was a kid....
@societyofsin In Japan that is my home country, even in as currently as 2011, there are no highways where we can drive cars so comfortably as you American did in 1970s! It costs a lot of money to use expressways such as Tomei(東名) or Meishin(名神) route. In Diet, the ruling party proposes to make a bill so that we can use expressways for free.
@MurphyColeman That's interesting.I thought Japan was a predominately urban country. If you are speaking of toll roads, then I can relate.Florida has a toll road called the "Turnpike" and it can get costly if you travel a lot.
Japan has rugged terrain,from what I understand.So that may be a factor...I don't know.
Anyways,I hope that the bill will pass so it will make it easier on your wallet to travel :)
@societyofsin Thank you for your warmhearted response! Of course, any route running around Japan has been drastically improved compared to that of 1950s. There were long unpaved ways all over the nation at the time. Even many part of the national highways was filled with a lot of mud when it was raining. There was a big difference in economic power between USA and Japan. After Japan was severely defeated in World War II, it made an effort to catch up with developed countries.
In an odd way this first scene reminds me of the astronauts in 2001. In their space suits all you hear are breathing and the hiss of an air supply. In Duel all you hear are road noises and the radio. Both examples reinforce a feeling of isolation from the outside world.
Friends, know this: this movie is NOT about road rage. It's about man vs. the machine. In other words, it's about the domination of man by the very technology he has created. Notice that the truck driver is merely a spectral figure, the "soul" of the machine.
@Phanfer. Fagfer. I read you bad mouthing the beginning of this movie. Maybe I'm the man in the truck and I will crush your puny Brokeback Mountain ass.
@TakeAShowerStinky All i said was i think the opening is pretty boring. I'm entitled to my own opinion, i was just leaving a comment because thats what the comment section is for, COMMENTS.
@Phanfer What do you mean "most boring opening ever"? What do you want - big blockbuster special effects from the first second? The best films are the ones that start slow and gradually build up. Duel is a perfect example of a film that proves you don't need loads of money and loads of over the top special effects to make a great film. This will stand the test of time far longer than a lot of todays shit. No amount of special fx can glue you to the screen than a film with a great story line.
A man and his little 1971 Plymouth Valiant i saw this on the ABC Tuesday night movie of the week when i was a kid. It had me such suspense as a child but it's so memorable, those were the days when you actually get to watch good movies on regular TV I truly miss those days!
@hobokenplayboy Can't be a 1968 Valiant because in 1968 "The Big Three" GM, Chrysler & Ford did'nt produce vehicles with "column" mounted ignitions. As you can see @4:43 of Part 9 when he shifts the car into nuetral. Ignitions on the column were implemented in all Chrysler vehicles in 1969, also there were no "over the shoulder" mounted seatbelts manufactured in 1968 either, they were implemented in 1970. Also there were no front bench seat headrests manufactured in 1968 so it's a 69, 70 or 71
@kdemonde I have completed some additional research. It is a 1971 Plymouth Valiant. It is evident by the 1971 hubcaps and the style of the side marker lights.
Two additional scenes were filmed using a 1972 Plymouth Valiant. The scenes with the school bus and the "rear shove at the railway crossing" to lengthen the film to 90 minutes for international theatrical release. There's something new just for you.
@hobokenplayboy Your welcome and thanks for that additional info, i never did any research on the caps and rear lights so that was very diligent of you. I knew they used two Valiants because in a few scenes while he was driving down the road, you can see that in one scene, the car is very high in the back and in another scene the car sits low to the ground so i figured there were two cars throughout the movie. I'm gonna look into the Valiant myself and by the way do you remember the Dodge Demon?
@hobokenplayboy Check with your Dad again regarding ignitions on the dashboard and ignitions on the column. 1968 was the last year for dashboard ignitions on mostly all American cars. I can't think of any cars that had dashboard ignitions after 1968. Seatbelts before 1969 were manufactured "around the waist" style. And front bench seat headrests did not exist in ANY American made vehicles OR split bench (ie: Cadillac & Buick) with armrests in 1968, Headrests were implemented in 1969, it's a 71.
Thanks for posting this. Its one heck of a good movie. Ive seen it loads of times but never tire of it. It sort or draws you into the fray. How weve all felt like weve encountered this type of idiot on the road too!
I showed this to a girlfriend who'd never heard of it and when I told her that the plot consisted of nothing more than a truck chasing a car, she said she'd give it a few minutes to humour me, then leave me to it. She was gripped right to the end. A real classic!
I think Steven Spielberg was 21 when he directed this, which was unusually young to be given the job of directing any movie at the time. But since he pulled it off brilliantly and had innovative ways of shooting it, he was catapulted into "very promising future prospect" in the minds of the executives. Later he did Sugarland Express which at least the critics liked a lot. Then he made Jaws and the rest is history.
One of the trucks they used to shoot Duel is still in private hands.
@McLarenMercedes The man was gifted in his talent very early in life. Gosh, thanx to him for his choosing Oprah from a newcast she was doing in Chicago for her color purple role really open doors for her. You go Steven!!!
Man. This movie is so good. I don't understand why it didn't win a whole bunch of awards. Its so orginal (yes there is a whole bunch of car chase movies out there), but this one is really suspensful because it can happen in real life. Ghosts, vampires, and zombies are scarey to look at- but to feel true terror- it must be something practical. This movie gets an A+.
@hail1985 They came with both but the one in this movie was a 225 Slant Six, because they didn't want something powerful enough to give the truck trouble.
@Blueblur444 I have to agree with you Blueblur, lol...! Also, you have to keep in mind that the character Dennis Weaver played in this movie..., the last thing he'd think about was a vehicle powered with a V8. I mean, he was a somewhat anti~social family man, can imagine someone like that driving a 318, lolol...!
This Movie is one of the Best Examples that you dont need a 400 Million Dollar Budget to make a Great Movie. Its all about the Ideas and Direction. Especially the Camerawork is Great in this. One of my Favourite Movies!
This is one of my all time favorite movies. There is such little dialogue throughout and it feels very spacious because of that. It's such a simple premise. Whenever I ask someone if they have seen duel they don't know what in the hell I'm talking about. WTF was this not a classic since it was Spielberg's first? I was born in '81 but I appreciate many of the 70's films.
@bogglerful DUEL was Made-for-TV movie, so it was only eligible for Emmys in the US. It was released as feature film over in Europe, so it could have won some major awards across the pond. But, yeah, I think Weaver is magnificent myself and this certainly has the aura of a major motion picture, albeit a very tight and lean one. I still say this is one of Spielberg's best works. Top 5 IMHO. Heck, probably top 3!
"You know something? You know how much your dog likes meat? Well, make sure that's what he gets..."
"...the Grocery Cart double discount value I mention each week is not one of a kind. Uh-unh! It's only one of hundreds of double discounts always available at Grocery Cart..."
"...on the first sign of any hemorrhoidal discomfort, treatment should begin at once. Remarkably successful results have been obtained, with doctor-proven medication..."
It was funny as I was just thinking of it the other day (first time in years) and I didn't know the title. I was only about 6/7yrs and barely remembered watching this on NBC's Sunday Matinee in the 80s.
Googled: man chased by ghost truck...and here I am!
Glad I get to watch it again. Won't forget the name now. :D
man this is a good movie. I remember at truck stops when they played this movie. wow. And I live in LA and i think he took the 110 to the 5 south correct me if im wrong
spielberg admitted the suspense in JAWS was influenced by his work on DUEL ...his personal hommage to DUEL>> during the scene with the dead shark disappearing in the ocean, there is the similar dinosaur-sound as the scene with the truck crashing in the canyon ...DUEL was realized in 11 days! unbelievable :-) ...cheers
That's great, Oh and did you realize that you just spoiled the ending to everyone who has not watched this yet? I've alredy watched it (I have it on DVD) but remember, not every one has. If I were you I'd delete your comment and post it on the last part of the movie (and just so you know, Steven Spielberg did not use a similair sound in "Jaws", he used the exact same sound, just so you know).
Well I think I know after watching it twice. When David Mann past the trucker that triggered the trucker to go postal. Oh yeah and Mann was going to a business meeting.
my daughter (she is 16) and I just got finished watching Joy Ride 2. We have seen both of those movies. I told her that the movie Duel is such classic, compared to that POS we just got finished watching! Speilberg greatness, without violence and gore
my old cousin (45yrs) told me about the 80s n 70s movies , songs , cars , styles , night life , sports , love or romance , brands , humours , schools or studies , food dishes and everything , to me 70s n 80s r the best decades ever , I WISH I WAS BORN IN 80S OR 70S not on 12 - 31 - 1989 :(
This is the 1972 theatrical release . This is the version which is shown on t.v. The original version was released in 11/71 as the "Movie of the Week" ; this original footage can be seen here as well ( look for the "8mm Home Viewing" or something to that effect ... ).
@dexamyl Actually you have it backwards -- the TV airing was the brief one, and this is probably it. The other scenes (the diner, the elderly couple in their old green car, etc) were shot shortly after and added to the film.
The diner is now a French restaurant, apparently. At least, according to what I've read on the internet.
Yes, I love the diner scene, however no doubt when most people think of this movie, they more than likely aren't thinking of the, "the diner scene," but I love that scene, HA THE OTHER GUY: Man, you need help. DENNIS WEAVER: Don't you tell me,I need help lol and slaps that sandwich out of that guy's hands, then lol he beats the hell out of, Dennis Weaver.
(Note: I have seen the trailer and read the Wikipedia article (not in that order), so I know what to expect. Still...) Is it just me, or do reports of a stalled vehicle over the radio and the sight of ambulances on the side of the road seem a little like foreshadowing?
So Dennis Weaver's character is trying to make it to a job interview. He lives in one of LA's suburbs and he's driving east or northwest or something... out into the sticks. Right?
THANKS!!! for up-loading these.

Why would you post this movie and leave out the whole Chucks Cafe part? I'm not going to even watch it now, you should ad that.

Does the engine of Plymouth Valiant like that red one is a V8 or a 3.2 six cilinders engine?
hail1985 1 year ago
@hail1985 They came with both but the one in this movie was a 225 Slant Six, because they didn't want something powerful enough to give the truck trouble.

Ok, man. Thank you.
hail1985 1 year ago
@Blueblur444 I have to agree with you Blueblur, lol...! Also, you have to keep in mind that the character Dennis Weaver played in this movie..., the last thing he'd think about was a vehicle powered with a V8. I mean, he was a somewhat anti~social family man, can imagine someone like that driving a 318, lolol...!

This Movie is one of the Best Examples that you dont need a 400 Million Dollar Budget to make a Great Movie. Its all about the Ideas and Direction. Especially the Camerawork is Great in this. One of my Favourite Movies!

@Affenexpress yeah and another thing, at the end of movies today they have to have a humongus explosion(unrealistic) and they made this one perfect.
ZR1KingOfTheHillZR1 1 year ago
This is one of my all time favorite movies. There is such little dialogue throughout and it feels very spacious because of that. It's such a simple premise. Whenever I ask someone if they have seen duel they don't know what in the hell I'm talking about. WTF was this not a classic since it was Spielberg's first? I was born in '81 but I appreciate many of the 70's films.

Dennis Weaver deserved an Academy Award for his performance in 'Duel'.
bogglerful 1 year ago 2
@bogglerful DUEL was Made-for-TV movie, so it was only eligible for Emmys in the US. It was released as feature film over in Europe, so it could have won some major awards across the pond. But, yeah, I think Weaver is magnificent myself and this certainly has the aura of a major motion picture, albeit a very tight and lean one. I still say this is one of Spielberg's best works. Top 5 IMHO. Heck, probably top 3!

It was funny as I was just thinking of it the other day (first time in years) and I didn't know the title. I was only about 6/7yrs and barely remembered watching this on NBC's Sunday Matinee in the 80s.

spielberg admitted the suspense in JAWS was influenced by his work on DUEL ...his personal hommage to DUEL>> during the scene with the dead shark disappearing in the ocean, there is the similar dinosaur-sound as the scene with the truck crashing in the canyon ...DUEL was realized in 11 days! unbelievable :-) ...cheers
1bottlejackdaniels 2 years ago
That's great, Oh and did you realize that you just spoiled the ending to everyone who has not watched this yet? I've alredy watched it (I have it on DVD) but remember, not every one has. If I were you I'd delete your comment and post it on the last part of the movie (and just so you know, Steven Spielberg did not use a similair sound in "Jaws", he used the exact same sound, just so you know).

OK. I finished watching the movie, but I got a couple of questions.
Where was the guy going and why was the trucker chasing him?

This is the 1972 theatrical release . This is the version which is shown on t.v. The original version was released in 11/71 as the "Movie of the Week" ; this original footage can be seen here as well ( look for the "8mm Home Viewing" or something to that effect ... ).
Brilliant film !
dexamyl 2 years ago
@dexamyl Actually you have it backwards -- the TV airing was the brief one, and this is probably it. The other scenes (the diner, the elderly couple in their old green car, etc) were shot shortly after and added to the film.
The diner is now a French restaurant, apparently. At least, according to what I've read on the internet.

Yes, I love the diner scene, however no doubt when most people think of this movie, they more than likely aren't thinking of the, "the diner scene," but I love that scene, HA THE OTHER GUY: Man, you need help. DENNIS WEAVER: Don't you tell me,I need help lol and slaps that sandwich out of that guy's hands, then lol he beats the hell out of, Dennis Weaver.
jackiemickie 2 years ago 2
(Note: I have seen the trailer and read the Wikipedia article (not in that order), so I know what to expect. Still...) Is it just me, or do reports of a stalled vehicle over the radio and the sight of ambulances on the side of the road seem a little like foreshadowing?
