His explanation is not good enough. First, he did not explain why the second number is 4x. The second number could have been 4+x or x^4. And why is x + 4x equal to 5x? Why not 4x^2?And the last part! If 5x = 45, shouldn't x be 40? Why divide by 5 for both sides? Why not minus 5 on both sides? Bad teacher!!!!

His final answer is x = 9. Then the 2nd number 4x should be 49, right? Why 36? 9 + 49 = 58, not 45. This teacher simply did not make sense to me!!!

@HoSayLiaoLah Its is 4 x 9 not 49. So he is right. In algebra form it stands for 4(9)= 36

if x=3 and il say, 2x, that means 2*x means 2*3 = 6

or 2x = x+x=3+3=6.. :)

The explanation is clear enough, but I feel the style is a bit dull. This results in some students not paying attention, and not getting what should be a simple point.

I somehow prefer having a guy teach me than a female...since alot of times i found myself throwing papers at the teachers..but male teachers seem to take it more serious..so i pay more attention.

i still dont get how your second number is 36. I do understand that 45 - 9 is 36 but when you plug that into 4x wouldn't that mean 4 x 36 which equals 144

You need to watch again, but this time pay attention. He didn't say "4x36". He DID say "the SUM of x and 4x (x+4x)". x=9, and so 4x=36, therefore, x+4x=45.
