  • @nerdrage is it just me or did you forget to add the sulfuric acid in the ebay batch ?

  • Love the vids

  • I ordered Iron oxide and aluminum powder from him for thermite. Mixed it 2 to 1 Iron to alum lit it with magnesium ribbon and got something resembling a brownie .-.-

  • Man! you just saved me from making a mistake getting this cheap stuff. Thanks a million for this. BTW I love your vids keep goin man you rock!

  • lets give some money to nurdrage so he can buy chemicals

  • that sucks. :(

  • how much he wanted for that stupid thing

  • I have bought chemicals on Ebay before-- looked like it was something spilled on the floor and then swept up with a bunch of contaminants. The seller couldn't use it for quality/ purity, so sold it on Ebay. Suitable for what I want it for-- and as it's a soluble chemical I can filter out the impurities and recrystallize. MnO2 is a toughie, though. Can it be reacted and recovered with sufficient purity to clean it up?

  • Hey I just looked on eBay and I have found so £3.99 1kg manganese dioxide and this dude has like 500 of them I honestly don't know if it's good or not as I'm still In school and love chemistry lol so yeah MAIN POINT I'm on uk site and these dudes only deliver Europe so yeah

  • FUCK YOU GUMBY! Now thats money that he coulda use to show us something AWESOME.

  • genius!

  • nurdrage, you know you can report him for scamming your money and false representation

  • FUCK YOU GUMBY :D

  • cant you just seperate that sand using distiliation or a filter?

  • Sue the a bitch!

  • NurdRage, did you ever get your money back? I hope something like this doesn't happen to you again.

  • Thank you for all the effort you take to give us interesting videos. Too bad you were cheated so badly. It doesn’t surprise me that the stuff you bought on Ebay was impure. If certified pure MnO2 is so expensive how could you possibly buy it for peanuts on Ebay? And how much costs the reserch grade manganese dioxide per kg?

  • Sorry for the scam...

also, is the sand moving or something?

  • SUE THEM, FOR FALSE ADVERTISING.

  • that sucks

  • f*ck you gumby!

  • gumby96 is a MEGA FRAUDER! (cheap stuff makes mad)

  • what a mofo!

  • Pour liquid nitrogen on his bed while he is still brushing his teeth (:<

    (jk)

  • Apparently people nowadays don't know the difference between manganese dioxide and silicon dioxide.

  • @ALeKZanDoHr The bag clearly says "manganese dioxide"

  • i saw it "98% MANGANESE DIOXIDE" its bullcrap! this guy is a rip-off artist!

  • Damn that's just messed up

  • Holy crap, that's sucks.

  • dude that sucks major butt ill make sure my pyro friends know not to buy from him thanks for the vid on the fraud but sorry that happened to u man

  • it sucks that you got ripped off. i hope that this video will help prevent it from happening to others in the future i have to say. i am a BIG fan of yours and the nurdrage channel and have seen probably all of your videos and i know im about a year late but did you ever make the 1000 foot glowstick?

  • i dont really think you can blame him he is selling one pound of Mno2 for in the 5 dollar range i have seen certified lab grade Mno2 go for 8 to 9$ for 100 GRAMS

  • @silentknight2112 doesn't matter, if you say something is X quality, and sell it on that basis, you are legally bound to that statement, no matter what price you charge. He said it was 99% lab grade quality, and clearly i have proven it is not. He is either A) fraudulent or B) negligent

  • @NurdRage i understand that and i realize that the way i worded my comment was incorrect. i meant it in a way that you are a VERY knowledgeable and you know the real value on actual high purity MnO2 but you went and purchased a quantity on ebay for a very low price and expected high purity i would have been skeptical in the first place .... like the old saying if it sounds too good to be true .... it probably is! but no matter whats done is done and we have all learned from this experience

  • @silentknight2112 Actually, high grade MnO2 is actually extremely cheap, this is because it's produced in bulk quantities for batteries. The stuff sold from lab suppliers is very high due to middleman mark-up and because its sold in smaller quantities. I thought the ebay seller had purchased a bulk order of the stuff and was repackaging it himself. The price is very consistent with market prices.

Now if he was selling platinum at half market price then i would skeptical.

  • @NurdRage cant you get pure MnO2 by mixing potassium permanganate w/ hydrogen peroxide?

  • Out of curiosity, how much did the certified MnO2 cost?

  • @gleepdiddly the seller has 1LB of the Mno2 starting at 3.99

  • "...anything requiring any level of purity other than crap wouldn't work". I love this quote, I'm gonna use it haha.

  • I just checked and this guy is still selling it on ebay and has a 99.9% satisfaction rating.maybe he's playing the ratings somehow.

  • @hedzombie i don't think he is, most of his stuff may be good, and the stuff that is cut might slip by because of most of his buyers are hobbyists... not scientists.

  • @NurdRage only buy from him for pottery

  • gumby is the only one selling manganese dioxide on ebay and he has like 150 reviews saying hes great and like 5 saying hes a fraud

  • @owennerd88 most people buying it are using it for pottery, thus they can't tell the difference and think it's great stuff.

  • @NurdRage makes sense.

  • @NurdRage lol

  • fuck gumby hes da ultamite bitch

  • You never added sulfuric acid to the cheap stiff you bought off eBay. Only to the expensive stuff.

  • @TheIIgnorant what do you mean? i added it to both.

  • @NurdRage in the video when you added the chemicals, you added the oxalic to both, but then it only appears that you added sulfuric to 1. maybe it got cut from video, and you actually added it.

  • @TheIIgnorant To me it looks like he added a mixture of (oxalic and sulphuric acid) to both beakers. At 1:20 you can clearly see the solution in the left beaker "discolouring", just before he adds another solution to it, which I am quite sure of is just some more oxalic and sulphuric acid. At 1:11 you can clearly see that the beaker he was adding from got empty. He basically made this into a fair experiment (i.e. same volume of the mixture of oxalic and sulphuric acid added for both beakers).

  • @NurdRage in the video when you added the chemicals, you added the oxalic to both, but then it only appears that you added sulfuric to 1. maybe it got cut from video, and you actually added it. 1:10

  • @TheIIgnorant Its all the same mixture of chemicals. both oxalic and sulfuric acids are added together in the same liquid.

  • what a dick to sell you that im sorry that you wasted your money

  • why do i always hear: Please subscribe, RAPE and comment ... ??

  • I have bought the same thing from him to use in batteries and discovered that I also have sand in my Mno2. I had a couple of questions that I hoped you would help me with:

    1. Were you able to weigh the sand to mno2 and come up with some sort of sand to mno2 %? If so, what was it?

    2. Did he ever replace the mno2 with higher quality material?

    Thanks,

    Paul

  • if this ever happend to me id find that guy and burn his house, no matter the consequences

  • how can sand have worms in it??? watch carefully the part of the sand again........

  • @greektutorialvideo what worms? all i see is sand and bubbles (since it was mixed with water)

  • @NurdRage ok sorry but it seems like worms :-P anyway i watch it carefully and your right.....

  • ROFL! "anything requiring any level of purity other than crap wouldn't work"

  • get magnesium and burn it and you get magnese dioxide

    simple

  • @dukilaki completely wrong. Manganese and Magnesium are two entirely different metals. burning one does not make the oxide of the other.

  • @NurdRage

if i find it i will send you link with my tutorial

  • @NurdRage Since u are a chemist i have accidently inhaled a little butane cause of a leaking can i found in my garage junk and now i feel sleepy and dizzy and my hands are numb will i die?

  • @dukilaki what nurdrage said plus the fact that youd get oxide not dioxide

  • @dukilaki lol.... an epic fail if i ever saw one

  • How pure exactly do you need your MnO2 to be? Sigma sells 99% pure reagent grade for less than $50 for 100g.

  • i have bought lots of things from gumby and they have been fine like aluminum powder and its been fine

  • you rock!

  • what do you do as a day job?

  • how can your sand have some worms in it?? please check the sand showing part it have worms in it.......

  • Have you tried refluxing KMnO4 with toluene? If I remember correctly it yields MnO2 and C7H6O2, so you could get relatively pure MnO2 if your KMnO4 is pure.

  • damn you gumby!

  • you can sue him for that. false advertising and such.

  • Oops thts sapped to say ass hole but I'm on my iPod touch and my finger slipped and pressed send

  • Ass

  • He's still selling it!!! >:O

  • So have you already managed to make the video about purifying the manganese dioxide from batteries you mentioned at the end? I think I haven't found it yet, though I would be really interested to see how you do it!

  • you have a meth lab in your house

  • This is what happens when you use the Internet for purchases. o.o

  • "it would pass basic tests... but anything requiring any level of purity other than CRAP wouldn't work" ha hahah.. ah man, I'm sorry for the bad experience, that REALLY is shady but I thought that line was great!

What douchebag dilutes SCIENCE LAB materials just for profit?! If I ever see this guy I'll punch him in the face for you.. and again, for Science.

  • Did you give negative feedback on ebay? ^_^

  • Fuck you Gumby!!!!

  • dont ever trust ebay EVER

  • Well at least you didn't buy any more than 20 buck it still pisses me off what ppm do these days

  • is it cheaper per amount of "pure enough product" to extract from batteries and purify or to buy the contaminated stuff and purify it ?

also why are you not divulging the ebay seller's identity so we can avoid him ? are you pointing your finger at a seller or to the whole of ebay ?

also you could have called your credit card company and gotten a refund, did you try that ?

I know this is fraudulent but buying on ebay is always caveat emptor

I've been burned on ebay, but overall it's good

  • @shodanxx turn on the annotations, its in the upper left corner.

  • @NurdRage

    thanks, annotations were off

also it was great that you showed us a bit how you "debug" your experiments

I think knowing what to do when things go wrong is an essential chemistry skill that I still lack

did you get your money back in the end ?

also is there a proper place to send you questions ? (I'm trying to passivate rusty steel before painting it and I have a few paint questions, "urethane-modified alkyd binder" uh ?)

  • Nooo D: Ah... well.. balances you out. If you get too good things and everything is always well- youre bound to get something heavy. But this isnt that bad :P. Karma balance =D

  • Lul. Love your term "eBay crap".

  • That sand looks awesome

  • thegeekgroup these guys are great tooo

  • TIHS IS THE SECRET ;HOW TO MAKE COCA COLA

  • NurdRage you need to find that seller a rope and a tree... lololol jk :P

  • Yeah, bind him to the tree with the 100ft glowstick, lol

  • @sciencoking LOL

  • Get a rope!

  • greetings fellow nerds... lol

  • is this your real voice? and if it isnt then what are you afraid of?

  • "Any level of purity other than CRAP"

Funniest thing I've heard in a long time.

  • Wow... Can you report him for frauddulent sales to remove his Ebay account(and perhaps IP ban him)? Or report it to the FBI and have the paper trail followed and him prosecuted? I know that it must be a danger if it is given in that state.

  • how much is ultra pure manganise dioxide?

  • greetings nurdrage, if you are looking for 99.9 percent lab grade manganese dioxide, you could get half a pound from united nuclear.com, and yes they ship to Canada

  • we got a few things from him wish we would have seen this first!!! sodium silicate is what we got and sodium carbonate, hope they are good? Joseph T fly2000jtb

  • they have criminalized the materials necessary for discovery. I hope they get sick and need the help of a chemist or a doctor or a physicist or a biologist (the distinction is academic) or a mathematician (and there the distinction is also academic). Hopefully by the time they get sick, there will be none left.

I love your videos. They make me wonder what we could make. Keep making them. I'm not a chemist but I always suspected it was all under the sink : )

  • eBay. It's cheaper for a reason. lol

  • I find it funny that somone is trying to rip off scientists, the one demographic of buyers who can litteraly prove beyond a shadow of a doubt you have ripped them off. That takes alot of gall. Favourite part is where you sarcastically wonder what it could be.

  • NURDRAGEEEEEE

    lol

  • Well, that's eBay for you..

  • This would be the last person on earth I would want to piss off. Send this guy some bad stuff and that's it. You're a goner. You take a bite out of your morning cereal and the next thing you know you are trying to scrape your guts back into your mouth.

  • I live in portugal and i want to buy sames things in ebay, the problem is the shiping.

Where i pay the ecomend, and how much is the shipping?

    thanks

  • Comment removed

  • You are cool. Period.

  • loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooool

  • I really love your presentations! Great quality, captivating content and enjoyable delivery. Thank You again for taking the time to make the day of fans of science from near and far. <---Hope you like that; I wrote it for you.

  • thats bullcrap!!

  • wow that sucks, at least you know enough to test for it!! should report them or ask for a refund via paypal.

  • did u inhale sulfur hexafluoride??

  • all your videos are good-

  • The 0.5 molar sulfuric and 0.5 molar oxalic: did you make that by taking 1 Molar solutions and combining equal volumes to dilute to 0.5 molar? Thanks!

  • people is now trying to sell crap on ebay i never trust actully buy chemicals from ebay thanks for pointing the name out

  • why is it when i try to find stuff like sulfer nobodys selling any?

mayby its because i want to make gun powder?

would you now how to make any cool small explosive out of comin house hold things

  • Hrm, just had a quick look at the supplier I get chems from (not ebay, it's a proper company) and they sell "Minimum 74%" MnO2 at £9.80/kg or 6kg for £49.40, is this a good price? Bear in mind this is England where EVERYTHING costs more

  • Have a question for you. Wiki (I know its not a great source but its usually a start) states that MnO2 decomposes at a certain temperature. My question is, what does it decompose into?

  • that sucks man, that's really terrible.

    raaaaaaaaaage

  • did you get a refund?

  • There isn't a way to remove the sand?

Like using a vacuum filter or something lik that?

  • @Nokalit Doesn't matter, I paid for something which i didn't get, that is fraud.

  • @NurdRage hey do you accept donations? i mean would it make it easier on you if you had another source of income in other words

  • @NurdRage hey do you accept donations? i mean would it make it easier on you if you had another source of income in other words. and besides that would that help you in making more nurdrage videos?

  • @NurdRage I would kill that people that send it to a some good man as you NurdRage :( It is ok to rip someone that will make explosive with that chemical, but the mad that ripped you is a f***ing moron :(... I hope you didin't pay two much.

  • @NurdRage

Your right, It is the principle of the matter aswell as time $ other chem waisted. I been burned too many times on Ebay and I almost never buy any chem's on it. The last straw was when I was supposed to get potassium iodine & I got some baking soda mixed with (maybe) 50% old oxidized potassium iodine.

  • @NurdRage holly crap I bought the same damn stuff! I've got the same bag with same label from ebay a couple years ago. And you know what else I just did? Tossed a crap load of old batteries because I thought I had pure MgO2 in a bag ... so why would I waste my time with a bunch of stupid batteries to get it? I guess it's impure in a metal tube or impure in a plastic bag...

  • @alancj05 sorry... MnO2

  • I also bought some bone ash from the guy. Cool trick Nurdrage; mix bone ash with plaster and aluminum powder. The plaster is a binder and oxidizer as is the calcium phosphate. Light it with an oxy/acetylene torch. A residue of phosphorus is left after it burns and if you do this at night on a steel plate and try to scrape the ceramic crud off you will get glowing streaks as the phosphorus residue lights up from the exposure to air with the scraping of the putty knife. Thrilling accident!

  • @NurdRage If you report the seller you may get your money back and your can leave an honest feed back as well. I guess you might have done it already. I hate frauds and people who commit it.

  • gumby96 is gay

  • It is amazing that you use science to put this person on blast. Amazing as alwayss

  • i love these vids

  • im pretty shure you could make some of the highest grade meth in the world

  • this is what I love about science. You can prove people wrong with simple experiments based on solid scientific principles.

    A+, subscriber for life.

  • the 10 dislikes are the gumby guy making 9 different other accounts and thumbs downing this.. LOL

  • What Gas will make Mn02 react the most to produce Something that is useful and if it will make something useful?

  • The voice he uses is YouTube epicness

  • no wonder...i bought pottasium permagante from a person called gumby96 and i found out it wasnt reactive with hydrofluoric acid nor alcohol...damn..

  • that's pretty bullshit. kinda fucked up you paid up the ass for the best material and received some fucking sand.

sounds like a job for nopacs the avenger.

  • @Nopacs

Since when is $20 considered "paying out the ass"?

  • Lol "That is SAND.."

  • That is interesting!

I've bought Fe2O3 with the same label on the zip-lock bag, maybe from the same ebay supplier.

It was very bright red, compared to the stuff I bought from a local chemistry shop (dark red).

When making thermite with the bright red, it was very slow burning.

On the contrary, the thermite with the dark red reagent grade burned very fast.

  • Who evrer tiped u off diservs an ass kikin

  • I could not get the MnO2 from United Nuclear to react with the acid mixture either. I don't have a microscope handy but I suspect its just as faulty for the same reasons.

  • @Kalash239 I actually have heard of United Nuclear!... They sell uranium! At least they used to, I don't know anymore. I would think that they sold quality chemicals if we paid for it. :/ hope so

  • @Alain34nage UN has been a very good site to me, this is the first time I have had an issue with their chemicals. I hope it was just an anomaly. As for their Uranium metal and ore samples they are legitimate but only in stock sporadically since their move.

  • @Kalash239 oh, thanks. hope so too :)

  • @Kalash239 no, thats strange united nuclear is a certified company and i have had absolutely no problems with products, maby they got a bad batch or something

  • @Kalash239 thats very strange, United Nuclear is pretty trustworthy, could it have been your acid mixture???

  • @rob27222712 I made some Mno2 the inefficient way (reduction of Kmno4 and subsequent filtering and purifying) and used the same acid mix with chemicals from the same lots. It reacted vigorously and immediately, quickly dissolving into solution. UNs other chemicals have been pretty good quality lately, so maybe it was a once-off thing.

  • aww, that sucked

  • Ceramics suppers are great for MnO2. I got 500g for $4 NZD. It's obviously purer than battery grade

  • what an ass he scrwed u over

  • I feel your pain.

These kind of jokes can cause you to lose months of work and quite some money.

    Great upload and thank you!

  • how much did you have to pay for that fake shit

  • ...This is what you get for buying chemicals from anonymous users on ebay...

  • Sorry you got ripped off by a real bad example of normy culture. Hope this doesn't put you off and I hope Ebay drop onto that ripoff merchant like a ton of elephants holding a ton of bricks.

  • lolz we also got ripped off whit CaC2 it was about 90% sand

(tested by gas estechiometry and dimentional analysis) was like omg we aare making acelitene omg!!!...wtf, 10 ml gas at 27 ºc and 640 mmhg...WTF man?

i almost scream in class: Scaaaaam!

  • I see you named the seller now, good for you. Fraud is fraud, and he deserves to be called out. Even if it wasn't his own fault, people should be wary buying from him. I did this test on my own sample that I also bought from him (before I saw your video) with the same unfortunate results. Interestingly, I also tested my lantern battery MnO2 (thanks for that idea too, btw) and that one ended up with some nasty tar-like sludge and looked worse than the ebay stuff. Not sure what that is, any ideas?

  • @mrhomescientist oh lantern battery stuff is supposed to be that way. It's actually a combination of MnO2, carbon particles, iron oxides/hydrates, and some organic binders. My video on making it into manganese sulfate shows this. I prefer the lantern battery stuff as it seems to have less... "extras" as opposed to the ebay crap. I don't mind impurities, as long as i know what they are and that they are there.... the ebay crap doesn't fit that description. :)

  • @NurdRage ahh you're right! I saw your other video and that looks exactly like what happened with mine. Thanks for the info!

  • @NurdRage could you not use the sulfuric acid soln you made to purify the battery stuff.
