@juanfjimenez9 If you're using 2012 just make your stuff in max, load in Mudbox, then export to Maya from Mudbox. They all have interoperability at this point, but you have to go in that order unless you want to export an OBJ/FBX.

i bought it and it payed off well if u wanna make SL characters and make ur own Avatrs and make gmes with VS ultimate including XNA games...if u want a lfreeware alternative- choose blender it goes for all of those that wanna get into the 3d animation field.

Maya 2012 has a ton of bugs!!, fix em before releasing your expensive products pleasee. The only maya that is stable enough at this point is still maya 2010, maya 2011 has bugs too. Now we got maya 2012 with, more bugs...

So basically Maya has turned into Motion Builder for animation. This is GREAT!  I actually preferred to animate in MB. This is all so very familiar to me and Im so glad they are integrating all of this. So, does Maya 2012 also have the ability to copy and paste poses (or partial poses) while parts of the control rig have Tran and Rot locked?

But I would suggest taking the time to learn how to do the modeling yourself and recieving the satisfaction of saying" I made this." Im assuming you spent $3500 on this program?

Just tested it myself on my own machine, and it seems that you can't zero out the controllers. You can choose "Stance Pose", but that reverts everything, and that's not really useful. What if I just want to zero out a single controller? Or even just a single attribute of a controller (just Rotate X, for example)?

Renderman(made by Pixar) was the renderer used in integration with maya, although maya comes with mental ray, which is very good. They also used software they made, but for the film it was mostly maya.

Maya is the best 3D application for character animation(it's also good for everything else), It's the most used in the film industry, it's also used in the gaming industry...

No problem. If you are still a student, you could go to the Autodesk website and download the free student version of their software(including 3DS Max, autocad, maya, softimage and others)...

and the internet is a great learning resource.

So if want to get into the 3D world, i would recommend Maya, because it's one of the most complete 3D.

And if you want to make a living out of 3D, don't limit yourself to just one specific software. there are some great software out there, like: Houdini, 3D Studio Max, Modo, Softimage/XSI, Lightwave, Cinema 4D, Blender(which is free), Vue, Zbrush and Mudbox.

Some of these aren't complete 3D packages , some focus in specific areas like modeling or environment generation...
