and instead of puttin' textures in Unity, you can set em up in 3D max, Unwrap them, Than go to "Render to Texture", apply the baked textures to your object, and than when exporting also check the "Embed Media". Now when you import into unity you have your object with the same textures as u had in max.
I haven't tried any exporting yet, because im still busy modeling. Though it seems that a lot of ppl are having problems exporting from newer version of 3ds max. Is that still the case nowadays?
Once Unity is unable to export 3d data to other software, it's totally useless. Nobody will serioulsy use Unity's Physics for anything. Without a exporter, this engine just sucks.
I see this question has been asked, but it's something I'm still struggling with.
I have made a well in 3DS Max, fully textured and such, but I'm really struggling with getting it into Unity with the textures intact... Do I have to import the textures seperately and then apply them in Unity?...
help i do not export to unity, i have 3ds max 7 and the process to export launch error :''texture file not found'' and not export to .FBX help me please, sorrry 4 my bad english.
Hi dude, many thanks for the tutorial! Any chances of doing a walkthrough in an apartment kinda tutorial? I am a noob and a bit lost as to how to go about it :-)
i can import my model into unity but when i do the model is kinda see through and the character can walk straight through it. i tried using this method and the normals method when you duplicate the model and make one side flipped normals but nothing seems to work. Can someone tell me how to fix this?
@mette0005 I'm not sure I used to have the same problem. Just make sure you have a UVW Map modifier on your model and it should be fine. Also make sure you import new asset through Unity3d instead of pasting it in the file location like some do.
You have to import the texture separately, then in unity, make a new material with the texture, and put it on the part of the object that applies. In some cases, if the texture is for the entire object, you can just put the material onto the entire object.
(once it's been put into your scene, then you can make it into a prefab with the texture)
Yeah, that's a real problem. The FBX 2011 version is not supported by Unity3D. At least the animations are missing / not imported. Does somebody know if you can change the FBX version Unity uses when automatically convert a .max asset?
I'm just the main programmer ;) but our 3D artists wants to use the max file directly.
I didn't find any option in Unity where you can set some exporter preferences.
Damn, just wanted to implement the animations, but now... :/
@superroblox That's because Unity3d doesn't support the new version of Autodesk's fbx export. Scroll down to the very bottom of the export fbx options and switch the version to 2006 and if that doesn't work then switch it to the oldest year. The 2006 version always works for me though. Let me know if that helped.
hi I did everytheng like in tutorial, but I'm geting an eror like this one (Unable to create destination file : -C:\Documents and Settings\Admin\Мои документы\3dsmax\export\fa.FBX).
Just to add. When you import your model into unity you're supposed to put the colliders AND set the scale factor to 1. Its set to 0.5 by default thats why your house looks small. ;)

I'm sorry, not object scale. Import scale.
Artaaaani 2 months ago
During export dialog, set units to meters, and in Unity set scale to 1. And you'll get the same size, in meters, without scale.

Great tutorial, except one thing. Unity recommends you use natural *.MAX files and NOT *.FBX
