Wrong, this is a bad interpretation of the word. "Karate" is an abbreviation of "Karate-do" and if you translate the whole term it means: "The way of the hand AND vacuum". It was first developped with techniques using the body only, you're not totally wrong. But in parallel of these, was also developed "Kobudo" which is a martial art based on weapons not forbidden in the early times of Karate in Okinawa.

In Okinawa, they were using karate in parallel of kobudo.
