HI, first question does not make sense but i wil try me best. You can have Linux on a mac yes, you can see that (the idea of video). No you cannot have these effects through VirtualBox or Parellel or Bootcamp YET. But you can use a Live CD (Linux on a CD booting up from RAM not your hard drive, or on the other hand you can install it on your hardrive and dual boot with mac or windows or all three.
The first question realy makes sense... I was asking if you can have all the compiz-fusion effects ont this MacBook simply because this MacBook (I have the same, it's a old one know) is not very powerfull (in terms of graphic card...).
Everybody knows that you can run Linux on a Mac and I didn't ask that...
the background sound, that's from the first commercial of apple right? the one with the dude looking girl running with a sledge hammer and climaxes with her throwing it on this uber big screen.
Yep. That's the one. That ad was revolutionary. The recent rash of "I'm a Mac, I'm a PC" commercials are just stupid, inaccurate and annoying (both OSX and Windows computers are Personal Computers).
The cube has a good function, It gives better eyecandy and provides the same usability as that shitty "Virtue Desktops" thing, The sad attempt at apple nerds trying to clone Compiz and Beryl.
I thought that this was nothing more than a useless flashy feature when i first got it, but now i cannot do without the desktop cube.
It is very usefull when i have multiple word, powerpoint and internet windows open in order to study for an exam, because switching desktops is so much faster than microsofts windows management.
I suppose it's pretty cool if all I want to do is switch from one desktop to another over and over and over while listening to an Apple ad so I get the feeling I using the Mac OS, or something. But, well, what if I need to do some work?
I spent some time working with a brand new Mac just the other day at work... I thought it was pretty crap actually. The finder is still starved of functionality (Dolphin/Konqueror/Nautilus are much better), there's no ext3 support out of the box and no straightforward method of getting it (strange for a Unix system), apt package management kills the Mac, I didn't think the latest look was that good... Disappointing over all... I was happy to go home to my GNU/Linux system.
Hi I noticed that one of the previous comments asked how CS2 runs... It runs perfect. The person also asked if anyone ran anything higher than Directx 8. Yeah, Call of Duty 4 runs flawlessly in wine. And to the guy who said OS X has a better interface: The Gnome desktop environment is so configurable, you can make it look EXACTLY like any operating system you want... OS X, Vista, XP, Windows 2000, or even something original... Hardly something for 6 year olds
Not to mention the EFI BIOS that Macs use. Most people don't know about it. It implements a full network stack (that means it can circumvent your security sending packets of information to wherever it has been told to). Its hardcore DRM, its Big Brother. The exact opposite of what Apple claimed to stand for in their "1984" ad all those years ago.
That looks really good! im running a black macbook, with quad boot, and was wondering if you have any links on instructions on how to instll compiz, as uv done? that would be really good if i could get some direction. (newish to ubuntu) thankx :)
Why should the Free Software / Open Source communities add value to Apples proprietary desktop when they already have an outstanding free software platform to work with ?
That's nice and all. But with Apple's new Mac OS X Boot camp you can have both OS's on just that one computer. You run Mac OS X and Ubuntu with no problems. I like Both OS's. I just hate Windows.
What are you getting out of this graphical user experience really? Cube rotation, squiggly windows, and bouncy, flaming, liquid, sparkly, flashy icons do what exact? OS X gives you the most beautiful interface, the most elegant and--here is the most important--the most practical. Besides appealing to your inner gamer, what do viscous dialog boxes give you? I mean, besides a headache.
It gives you choice. If you want to spice up your computer with some desktop effects, there are many to choose from with Compiz Fusion and they are all very configurable. Likewise, it is just as easy to turn them all off if you are more concerned about battery life. I think most Mac users understand the importance of aesthetics.
Define pratical? It really depends on what you want to do with the computer. For example if it's the basics (email, IM, office documents) then any OS does it. If you want games you want Windows usually (DirectX).
A beautiful interface is a preference. Frankly I like my customized Ubuntu over my customized Vista and XP, and any Mac I've encountered so far.
This is running on a regular Macbook. I have the latest version of WINE installed. Photoshop CS2 works okay, but activation and program update doesn't work. I recommend running Windows XP in VirtualBox or VMware server for any of the Windows XP programs you need to use. Haven't tried cedega.
It seems to run very well. I've used it quite a few times and it is a lot more convenient that loading up a virtualized version of Windows. The only problem I'm seeing is that activation doesn't work and also, the online updates do not work.
It is worth it, and worth learning. If you've got compatible hardware, Ubuntu just works, right out of the box. In my experience, Ubuntu Gutsy is more stable than Windows Vista and I'm actually more productive while using it than I was on Windows XP.
Hi andgar. It is very easy. You can download the CD image from Ubuntu. Use disk utility to burn the image to a CD. Then, reboot your Mac and hold down C or option key to boot from CD. Run the Live CD option to test Ubuntu out before installing anything to your hard drive. It will run slow because it is loading from the CD, but will give a good idea of how it will work. If all looks good, you can click the install link on the Desktop and the rest is pretty straight-forward.
Just be careful with the partitioning if you want to keep your old OSX install. That step would require a tutorial and I'd be happy to write one if it is requested. Apple makes it difficult to dual-boot for OSX Tiger users because they put a time-activated lock down in the Bootcamp beta application and it won't run anymore. Bad Apple!
After Ubuntu is installed, you'll need to enable desktop effects: System > Preferences > Appearance. Or, you can leave it turned off if battery life is more important. You'll want to install compizconfig-settings-manager to make it easy to adjust and add effects.
Finally, if you want to improve the appearance of you desktop, head over to gnome-look.
They've got tons of great looking desktop and icon themes to download. And the great thing is, everything on Ubuntu is free including OS upgrades. Ubuntu keeps getting better with each new release. Enjoy!

Hi,
Can you tell me if you can have all the compiz-fusion effects on this MacBook?
And can you have these effects trough VirtualBox or Parallel or only if you boot to Ubuntu with Boot Camp?
Thanks

Then click "Applications > Add/Remove" and browse the "work" and "office" list at the left for what you'd need to do to get your work done.
BUT you will only need to do this if the OpenOffice apps do not "get the job done" for you. (They come installed by default, you mac fanboy)

eh... Mac gives a comparable interface, that is just differant. I wouldnt call it better, nor would I call it worse.
Cube rotation keeps me organized
Windows that are squiggly are easily mutable, and are good for snapping faces
Flaming is good for large screens and presentations. Icons are there so words arent needed. A good symbol makes navigating easier.

Is this on a macbook or a macbook pro? I've been thinking about switching to ubuntu. Have you had a chance to try out WINE or cedega?

How well does CS2 run? I tried it a while ago whenever Edgy came out, and keyboard shortcuts caused it to go into a persistant crash.
Have you also tried anything 3d or directx 8 or higher?
