When I came home in 1969, the dead were put into standard military gray coffins
and as we loaded each one on the plane, a chaplain said prayers. The reference to anti-war still stands, ya git and if you don't see it, it's due to your limited perspective. It was also used in anti-war rallies as an anti-war song, so unless you have some inside perspective from actual life, get a life.

Song written by Curly Putnam who was the owner of 'Junior's Farm' that Paul McCartney wrote about in his song. He and Wings stayed there for a few weeks getting ready for a big tour.
There's a faint suggestion, in the military drum-beat of the opening, and in the piano style, that the song may refer to the American Civil War, perhaps relating to the execution of a Confederate deserter or spy. [Mario Petrucci]
A lot of people did versions of this song. I'm not really who did it first. Elvis may have done a version of "Green, Green Grass of Home." I wouldn't be surprised. The first version I heard was by Johnny Cash on a live album he did at Folsom Prison. Porter Wagoner also did a version.
@whirlyfan yes and not only elvis but allso johnny cash but i don't like johnny cash cus he's voice is 2 nagging Joan Baez covered it and a lot of other singers 2
My mum loved Tom Jones ... so i grew up listening to him ... sadly its 2 years next week since my mum passed away .... but we played this song at her funeral .... so now it will always hold a special place in my heart .... i love you mum xx
When I joined the British Army in Hampshire , a few weeks after leaving the Caribbean, while on basic training I used to play this song every morning during NAAFI break . One of the NAAFI ladies asked me if I was feeling home sick. Indeed I did. This has remained one of my favourite songs.
Dreadful. Good that he is able to sing what he wants to today, instead of this fluffy garbage. GREAT VOICE, TALENTED MAN. Just thankful his newer songs are much better. :)
i first heard this song when i was 8yo and i thought this was a happy song about coming home after being away for long years. now i'm 22 and when i listened up to the end and heard "as they lay me 'neath the green green grass..." i said i've been duped. this song reminds me of country life where there's a Mary, old oak tree and green grass
This song had allot of meaning back when it came out in the US during the Viet Nam war. Friends over there thought it was almost written and sung for them. Great Tom Jones rendition.
Tom Jones was born and raised in Wales; he is not an American!!! Super sexy voice and ruggedly handsome....bet he did some rollin' around in the green green grass when he was a wee nipper!!! Luv from Canada
Wonderful song that takes me back too and nearly 3 Milkl. viewers that looked at here and many Mill. more that have heard it. You are the Greatest of all the Singers that lasted in time. Just great to hear it again and I will hear it many more times and know I am just one fan of many Mill.

I was serving as a squaddie stationed in Fallingbostel, W Germany when this song was released in late'67, and my mate Taff couldn't stop playing it. And at the Naafi Club we would get drunk and sing along to this song. Poor Taff was in tears most the time. It's so Welsh, isn't it???
this song bring my memories young at the 1961 .. remember with my first i, m leave my country birth Rumah Sakit Balimbingan at Pematang Siantar - and i,m sty at the England now.. don,t know when back to Siantar and to Pondok 1 Jalan Kemiri 1belakang Super Market Simpang Limun -- oh sweet memories.. bung wsu...
Brings back memories when I was a kid. My parents used to buy karaoke VCDs playing all the 70s songs... That was during the late 90s though. This is one of the song I fell in love when I first heard them.
This was an antiwar song about the return of a fallen soldier buried in the Green Green Grass of Home. This was a beautiful song then, and just as meaningful now.
@nicknaz49 Anti-war? This song is about a prisoner who is about to be put to death the next morning. At best it is an "anti-death-penalty" song, if that. No doubting it is a beautiful song and very touching. But let's not give it more importance than is necessary.
very nice and sentimentel, i remember my college time in town with no green green grass, and my thoughts flew away to my hometown in the country, full of trees, grass, woods and erverytime i heared that song ,tears came into my eyes...
Tom Jones doesen't need to think he just sings he is awesome just ask John Farnahm, if youned singing lessons he's your man. Dancing Mate i has doing the whats new pussicat to my my mum when I was five rischa and the cover of burning down the house was one of my favorite sones of all time
I live Tom's rendition of this song - it touches me more and more as I get older. We will all reach our final destination some day, and some of us, before we cross, will be lucky enough to awake from a dream were we relive our sweetest moments. The sweetness of the scene evoked by this song is as good as it gets.
I was abroad, as a sailor and I listened to this song on my little radio my father-in-law had given me as a present. My wife (my Mary, that is) waited for me at home.
As I listened to this song I looked at four grey walls, just as in the song, and thought of home. Brings back fond memories of back in the day.
Notice how he (a Brit) faithfully uses an American accent in this American song. He is overlooked today because of the lack of variety shows, indeed, actual musical artists. Instead we must endure American Idols, amateurs.
l remember this coming out in 1967. ..lt was supposed to be released in the Autumn of 66 but was delayed due to a terrible disaster just a few miles from Pontypridd , South Wales where Tom was born . A giant mountain of coal mining waste gave way in heavy rain and slid down the hillside hitting a school and rows of terraced houses in the village of Aberfan in the valley below .146 people including 116 children died that day....so they delayed bringing out this song in respect of those gone on
@susjoh60866 Yes , for those of us old enough to remember the disaster of Aberfan , the memory of that dreadful day will stay with us forever ...... regards
@oudzuidNL That shouldn't stop you, I do Karaoke without a great or even good voice.
Others do it with out a good voice too.
But if you have a good KJ who is on the ball, they can tune the out put with echo and key and make it come out good, AND by doing it you will get surprisingly better. I have, after years of people telling me I couldn't sing and now doing Karaoke, I get great reaction even when I just sing without music or help.
I thought it was a soldier too. Looked up the words on Wikipedia, and when he says "there's a guard and a sad old padre". Now that describes a prisoner on death row, going to his execution.
He's In Prison, About To Go Down For Somethin. He's Dreamin About Mary And Her Hair Of Gold and Lips Like Cherries, thinking about home so intensely he thought he was home. Well done Tom, such a gentlemen, even when panties are thrown in your face.
@nogoodusernames667 ...i actually think he is singing about his funeral.... listen to the very last line.. he says "they lay me beneath the green green grass......" but i could be wrong

I live Tom's rendition of this song - it touches me more and more as I get older. We will all reach our final destination some day, and some of us, before we cross, will be lucky enough to awake from a dream were we relive our sweetest moments. The sweetness of the scene evoked by this song is as good as it gets.
jbailez 9 months ago
Not that Tom Jones sings it badly, but when you hear Tom's version after Elvis' version, makes you understand why they called Elvis the King.

This song was played at my Grandma's funeral and everytime I listen to it,
it makes me think of her and my childhood. Love this song!

When I first heard this song I was a young man.

@oudzuidNL Why can't you? I plan on doing it at Karaoke.
speedsville 11 months ago
@speedsville my voice is horrible .
oudzuidNL 11 months ago
@oudzuidNL That shouldn't stop you, I do Karaoke without a great or even good voice.
Others do it with out a good voice too.
But if you have a good KJ who is on the ball, they can tune the out put with echo and key and make it come out good, AND by doing it you will get surprisingly better. I have, after years of people telling me I couldn't sing and now doing Karaoke, I get great reaction even when I just sing without music or help.
Go for it! Whats the worst that will happen?
speedsville 10 months ago
@oudzuidNL well thank you for the positive vibration !!!

I thought it was a soldier too. Looked up the words on Wikipedia, and when he says "there's a guard and a sad old padre". Now that describes a prisoner on death row, going to his execution.

@mckinley5 Im pretty sure its a prisoner on death row looking at the grey walls that surrond him, but thanks for the different outlook on the song.
