I can remember playing football right in the middle of those flats on a concrete/tarmac pitch raised up about 10 feet with railings all the way round it. I was at wigan college at the time between 1975 and 1977.

Indeed - Masefield House, Thackeray House and Dryden House, to be precise. (Masefield Drive, Thackeray Place and Dryden Close still exist, though.)
They came down in 1990-91. I was at the time commuting from Appley Bridge to Liverpool University, and could see the flats from the train. Every day I could see each one in turn get a floor shorter as they were demolished.
Interesting use of Purcell's Funeral Music For Queen Mary, by the way.
The music was intended to invoke something of Kubrick's 'A Clockwork Orange' movie which seemed appropriate for the time I lived there. Hopefully not the case now!
I did! But only a few and using a crap Halina disc camera. I never go on Wiganworld because I find the people on there to be ignorant in a lot of cases (no offence to you as obvioously you are not) but I might put some up someday. They are not good quality though....
Good viseo. I always thought that Westwood Power station was a brilliant design. All brickwork, steel and glass. I kinda miss the cooling towers too. I used to hang out around there before they were demolished... even got into the power station once! :-O
You should've taken some photos! There are some good shots on the wiganworld website. I miss the old towers too, they were always the first thing visible on the horizon when heading back home.
