  • There's a cylon behind you.

  • "djent" is not a genre!

  • gent is short for gentleman, question answered

  • Djent is not a genre. If the sound of the guitar made the genre then thrash metal would be called "Crunch"

  • Beautiful tone there man, what guitar head are you using?? I'm looking for an Engl myself

  • @Daiphantus trolololRAGElolooooool

  • does the djent technique apply to all forms of metal?

  • @xXIDOLHANDZXx No, primarily for progressive metal, but some bands of other subgenres incorporate djent in their work.

  • @indefexeposthardcore for instance My Children My Bride, which is a Metalcore band.

  • "Maybe we should start calling doom metal 'DUNNN'."

    -Rosetta

  • all i hear is djent djent djent djent dun dun dun dun djent dun dun djent dun dun djent dun dun

  • whats that flashing box in the background?

  • Just to let you know. You had all the rhythms wrong when you were playing New Groove.

  • The PROBLEM and why you guy recicve some HATE is the reason that "that sound invented by messugah" ... was always there. ok? Second, you guys play rather advanced (progressive) metal but try to name the genre from a word that sounds like a chuged low string. "Chug Chug" "ohoh AhAh" ... monkeylike. A quote: "Maybe we should start calling doom metal 'DUUUNNN' " ...get it? Last thought. Centering everything around a "distinctive sound"...do you remember the NU Metal hype? Otherwise ur stuff is cool

  • Djent is such a gay word, like this guys haircut. Fack Djent, support REAL metal, not this preppy emo fag crap.

  • @JamesGod08 ral metal? are you fucking kidding me? bands that use this style are better than half that shitty real metal you probably listen to. bands lie periphery, born of osiris, volumes, veil of maya etc. are boss ass bands.

  • Soooooo, it's just palm muting a little more towards the neck..................Hey I have an idea! Let's call it DJENT! lol

  • Comment removed

  • Whats the song at 0:29?

    Thank you.

  • @kahngu New Groove by Periphery

  • So the term djent refers to the power chords? I thought it referred to the riffs with the bending. Which I never understood, because that doesnt sound like "djent". Know what i mean?

  • @EndOfWill Its sort of both, players use both techniques to add contrast there usually found together though

  • @EndOfWill call me a liar if you will. but listen to all djent I'm pretty sure its classified djent because of the time signatures...

  • @commando0224 I don't know, I didn't make the video lol.

  • What is djent?

Baby don't hurt me, don't hurt me

    No more.

    Sorry, I couldn't contain myself.

  • your accent is simply lovely

  • Nice vid. I love this style of metal just hadn't had it explained, not that it needed explaining. Can you list your setup, you have a great tone for this style. BTW, check out ola englund, or fearedse on youtube. He's tied in with this in many ways and does a fantastic job with his video and audio quality.

  • who cares, music is music

  • Thank you very much for making this video! those how disliked are fucking morons.... ;)

  • which guitar u using ..???

  • sounds more like a technique/sound then a genre... i mean if you really just wanna play a bunch a djent rythyms and cal it a style then thats a pretty dull and tasteless style of music

  • so....its playing bass with a guitar?

  • wtf?this is meshuggah where the hell did djent come from?did someone just decide to make an excuse for straight up copying their style?but i guess thats how all sub genres come to be when you think about it

  • personally SikTh started djent before meshuggah, meshuggah defined the tone, misha of periphery made it famous.

  • @DwellingPromisedHope meshuggah started out in the late 1980's and sitkth in the late 90's ( and on destroy erase improve and chaosphere there is some djent to be found)

  • this is the first time I've heard of "djent". Umm. like pantera has been making these sounds way before this term came about. WTF?

  • @bitshred Djent isn't the chug tone, as you need 7/8 strings. and you need the cross rhythms to get the tone... it came from meshuggah, who originally played sorta teched-the-fuck-up pantera sorta things. :P

  • Anyone else come here because you thought it'd be a djent cover of What is Love?

  • ever wondered bout getting an amp instead of a spaceship?

  • Why the fuck are you all guys hatin and bitchin about this video.

This guy is kind enough to try to explain us what "djent" means.

And bear in mind that some dudes are so narrow- minded that they need to create music categories and genres.

  • Lol u remind me of Jaxin from of mice and men

  • good guitar player sure. but personally that sounds kinda sounds like crap

  • Man you should become a teacher. :D

  • thank you for this. ive been trying desperately to incorporate djent into some of the stuff ive been writing lately and couldnt figure out how until now

  • So basically Djent is an ape making odd noises and trying to turn it into music. Lovely. lol

  • @austinfailz What do you think rap is?

  • @liogat No, that's an ape making odd noises trying to turn it into poetry.

  • hey man U are great i wish to start a band with u !!

  • nice vid mate, theres a lot of haters out there.good demo.well explained. would you mind sharing your settings on your amp. i've dropped my guitar to a before and it sounded similar but i can't get the lowest notes to sound so aggressive.

  • @simonrobb99

Thanks man means so much :)

ermm it changes from day to day some days i like a lot of low end and others i roll back the bass and add bait more presence, i always use plenty of mids though i guess punchy is a more low end sound more aggressive or metallic might be to add more treble and presence, maybe going to a thicker string gauge too might help

  • i dont care about what genre, but this man has some great tone. good work man!

  • Fireball or Powerball?

  • Veil of Maya has Djent sounding guitars

And it sounds sexy as fuck.

  • Whats the song at the start?

  • @mrfinh666 new groove by periphery... played incredibly bad

  • I LOVE THE CROSS TALK ON THIS ONE... GUITAR PLAYERS ARE ALL SUCH DICKS!!!!

    Cool Vid.. get a 9string!

  • @TerraDigitalMedia We're not all d---s. :)

  • Djent was just a guitar sound before. It's caught on as a subgenre of progressive metal. Deal with it.

  • great video man

  • The genre is Progressive Metal.

Djent is just an onomatopoeia, not a genre.

  • @klblackstar most is "technical experimental progressive metal" but since its such a bloody mouthfull who cbf lol

  • @klblackstar

It's a specific genre under a sub-genre. It's like a sub-sub genre like melodic death metal and symphonic black metal. Progressive is a broad term and by progressive standards Iron Maiden and Metallica are prog metal as well. Djent has many different specifications and most are unique to that specific genre in the way they are used.

  • Guys who cares if people want to sub genre a style of music ?

Does it really bother you guys enough that you want to tell other people to die ? its just so stupid people might want to sub genre a style so that if there searching for a similar style of music its easier and quicker to find because there are slight differences in any sub genre like I'm sure people who listen to pop punk often don't really enjoy like ordinary punk or people who enjoy Bhangra might not enjoy indian classical.

  • @Icarussailsmusic Djent is a technique, but i guess there is so much confusion now that no one really knows what to call it and i probably contradict myself from time to time but i don't rant about it ? its just one of those things. people who sub genre the name are most likely trying to find more music in a similar style why is that so wrong ? i fail to understand the hate that people give/receive due to people having a different opinion.

  • @Icarussailsmusic i think its because with a majority of djent style music, its almost all played on the 7th string and the amps usually end up sounding EXTREMELY similar to every other djent style player. at least from what I've heard. i like how u dont call it a style of music cuz its too narrow to be a genre or subgenre, which is why i guess people hate it but wording it as a technique definitely makes a lot more sense. cheers dude!

  • symphonic metal,thrash metal,traditional heavy metal,viking metal, this is a fucking joke..

  • look how queer this looks.. alternative metal,avant-garde metal,black metal,christian metal,unblack metal,crust punk metal,death metal,melodic death metal,technical death metal,funeral doom metal,drone metal,sludge metal,extreme metal,folk metal,funk metal,glam metal,gothic metal,grindcore metal,groove metal,industrial metal,metalcore metal,deathcore metal,nintendocore metal,neo-classic metal,nu-metal,post metal,power metal,progressive metal,djent metal,rap metal,speed metal,stoner metal

  • @liarschair10 cool story bro

  • do you know whats sad? what's sad is,that there are so many sub-genres of metal..that its almost homosexual..who gives a fuck!! does anyone know about BLACK SABBATH?OR IRON MAIDEN? OR DIO?? those guys started real metal..not some ripped off versions.

  • Djent is groovy, thats what djent is.

  • im new to djent so whats the intro song?

  • @birththroughosiris Periphery - New groove.

  • Basically it sounds like Meshuggah

  • it sounds like THAL

  • @Kris, you're obviously an idiot, you do realize you mentions deathcore(crap) and djent in the same context. And no it is not a tone you dumb shit, it is a playing style, stop pretending to listen to metal and stick to emo.

  • I don't say Jen... i said Duh Jen tuh. :P

  • @Jamsessionroom1337 i thought thats how it was pronounced...

  • @RougeSanta Nope. It's when you chug, Jen jen jen jen.

  • good stuff man.....be in my band :-)

  • All of you make me sick, djenting sounds retarded, call it what it really is, People on Meshuggahs balls. Don't get me wrong, I love meshuggah, but to base a new genre metal around THEIR sound is wrong.

  • @JuliusF83 YOU are wrong djent is not a genre it's a tone. You could play deathcore/djent just by adding a djent tone to it.

  • @JuliusF83 The fuck? Do you know how nearly every genre music has begun? It's not based around THEIR sound, it's an off-shoot using vaguely similar methods that resembles their sound in part. If you're really going to put down bands (such as Periphery) for using a similar sound is arrogant. I myself barely see the resemblance between them and Meshuggah...because honestly, listening to purely technical music is boring as fuck.

  • you disgust me with your generic-ness

  • Not sure why people think this sound is in any way "new". We were playing staccato metal like this thirty years ago.

  • What kind of distortion do you use ?

  • Another "New Groove"....

  • I didn't know it was pronounced "jent", I thought it was pronounced "dee-jent"

  • Djent is a guitar sound, nothing more.

Any one calling it a genre needs to wake the fuck up.

  • @setra23 and metal is something you swords of...

  • @setra23 Because no word in history has multiple meanings and the many uses and applications of a genre label will bow in light of your cutting edge and unique view on something you so easily brush aside.

  • @OC616 It's a guitar sound, nothing more. The media got a hold of it and tried to make it a genre.

How people think that a word for a very specific guitar sound can describe a whole genre of progressive, forward thinking metal is beyond me.

  • @setra23 Metal only had it's name given to it because it sounded heavy and metallic. Trance was given it's name for sounding like a trance state of mind. Blues for it's woeful and heart broken sound too. The Media is always gonna be here to "pigeon hole" things and I don't see a problem with identifying music as such.

    Get educated.

  • @OC616 So to be educated I have to follow what the media tells me to?

Fuck what the media wants to do.

  • @setra23 No, to be educated you have to learn what the hell you are talking about. This video you are watching now is media, the music you listen to is media. Media is content. If be "THE Media" you mean magazines and such, why are you talking about it on this poor lads channel? Off topic is off topic. Djent is Djent.

    Very informative video btw Icarussailsmusic!

  • @setra23 Leave it to the swoopy haired kids to take a piece of a song and make it a full blown genre lol.

  • @setra23 a-fucking-men dude i cannot stand all these little 14 year old scene kids caling djent a genre.. some of the most ignorant bs i've seen in youtube comments so far. it'd be ok if they were trolling, but they're not and it's saddening.

  • @xScitna

Who decides what and what is not a genre? Is there a secret board that meets contemplating what is a real genre and what isn't? You wouldn't refer to "ska" as just merely punk rock would you? I don't think so. If there are multiple bands who list "djent" as their genre, then i guess that makes it so. Send your opinions to the bands themselves because we don't give a shit.

  • @setra23 Absolutely. In a few words: Meshuggah have the merit for inventing a new kind of metal...and every fag who tries to COPY them is just an idiot. That's all. So PLEASE stop talking CRAP: djent is just a way to play using the well-known technique called "palm mute". Nothing else.

  • @setra23 Anyone still claiming it's just a sound needs to WAKE THE FUCK UP. We all know it's turned into a sub-genre of metal. Don't even fucking act like you don't get it. I guarantee you were all aboard the GOT DJENT train when it was rolling, weren't you?

  • @setra23

Too bad the Wikipedia page says it's officially a genre now, faggot. Wake the fuck up.

  • @Dawg658Jr Yer 'cause wiki is always right. Also, homophobic insults really add weight to arguments.

  • @setra23 That's why there's already a website called gotdjent categorizing a whole group of bands with this type of sound? Any band that utilizes this type of sound is going to be called djent. It's only a matter of time before it actually is accepted as a genre by everyone. I could care less really, just saying though it's headed more down that route than anyone realizes.

  • @Bikerboi13 *Couldn't care less*.

Could care less states that you do care.

The only reason it's being seen as a genre is because people just go along with whatever they're told to.

  • @setra23 That's like saying bebop isn't a genre. Djent is a genre, named after that sound. The genre doesn't really have a lot more to do with palm-muted riffs than other genres, it has other characteristics, but that name has just stuck over the years.

People go along with whatever they're told to? Do you also believe 9/11 was a conspiracy? Stop caring too much about it

  • Its all progressive metal to me

  • i wish i had ur setup lol

  • palm muting. done.

  • well jamie this is obviously not DJENT... its "Wahwuburraow wunt waht".

its the style my band made up. AND dont you have mirrors? your wacky ass hair cut makes me despise you. dont rip off meshuggah BRO

  • @Dma112288 U Mad Bro?

  • @Icarussailsmusic He's just jealous of your thousands worth of gear.

  • @Dma112288 please,kill yourself.

  • @Dma112288 you will never be as good as him, the fact you have to rip his hair proves that :)

  • @Dma112288 what band

  • @Dma112288 successful troll is successful

  • What song is he playing in the beginning?

  • Well explained, the thing about being a successful teacher, is getting the point across easily, you have this nailed my friend!!

  • Awesome tone. Don't get angry, but you played New Groove wrong.

  • its not a genre XD its more of a style. you dumb hipster fuck.

  • @RunsInTheSkinnyJeans <--this name hahahaha

  • @grindmetalhead I know XD

  • How much did the Powerball cost?

Also, you have an incredibly pleasant voice.

  • Good vid man. You a guitar teacher? You should be.

  • WATCH OUT DUDE!!! THERE'S A SYLON BEHIND YOU!!!!

  • And now I know.

  • lad knows his djent trivia :)

  • what is the song being played at the beginnng.

  • Thanks for the video, Good explanation. Thought I do wish you had a slightly better tone

  • 30% dislikes? are people kidding me? that video was awesome. thanks bro.

  • Fish and chips

  • wacarnold

  • good vid

  • djent isnt a genre its just a sound. to call it a genre is like calling bending a genre. otherwise, good stuff in this vid

  • keep this up man, you shouldn't have any dislikes. people are just stubborn.

  • the VERY first Djent, is the main riff in "Sad But True" by metallica, a friend of a friend of Fredrik Thordendal came up with it.

  • Its not invented by meshuggah. Korn started it i believe. Meshuggah just introduced it in harder metal styles.

  • @JustSomeRandomNewb Fair enough I think people give meshuggah credit because of them coining the term, but the sound has been around fa eva eva

  • learn the god damn song right -_-

  • Tuner goes: WHOOOOAAAHHH!!!

  • WANT THAT ENGL

  • ENGL amps are sick..r u using a powerball 2?

  • I 'borrowed' my old man's '52 Tele and his '64 Deluxe Reverb and can't get them to sound like the guitar in this video. And to think everyone says his set-up is good...

  • @carpballet you realise that you could play any guitar you want but without the right amp it'll never sound like that.. Guitar is 10% of the tone, the other 90% is the amp

  • @carpballet and you could easily play djent on a tele with a good metal amp. the deluxe reverb is a fantastic amp but in no way a metal amp

  • That's annoying man, it's pretty generic too.

  • @CoDisafishy I would not say its generic. A lot of Djent focuses on poly-rhythms and different time signatures. Its a pretty technical subgenre of metal/hardcore if you get into it. He's just going over the basics.

  • @carlresmondo Not hardcore, progressive metal.

  • @kingplutoxiao1 Yeah, i would have to agree with you. It is more metal than anything.

  • u're playing it wrong =)

  • :12 fucked that rhythm up white boy

  • djent isnt new at all...

  • woo tesseract!

  • Amazing job!! Love this video!

  • You dont really NEED a 7th string. They call them Extended Range guitars, and their exactly that. You have the monster drop tuned chug availability with the extra bass string, while keeping the standard 6 string tuning. No need to tune 2 and a half steps back and forth to keep your versatility, It's simple convenience. Plus 7s are fuckin sick lol

  • what tuning???

  • Djent needs more than 6 strings man. You cant get the bassy bends and booms without it.

  • @Gazjohnful my 6 string baritone djents a lot more than all your 7 strings ever will! ;D

  • @freakguitar1 Thats complete bull shit but nice try :')

  • @Gazjohnful im really serious.

    why would u need a 7th string?

a baritone has a longer scale and therefore can use thinner strings for the same tuning, so it has LOTS of "broaar" and lots of boom and bassy bends.

and trust me, a baritone sounds a lot djentier than a regular guitar.

i own a regular 7 string, a baritone and a baritone 7 string and the regular 7 has the least djent character...

  • @freakguitar1 I own 3 baritones... seven six strings, two 7 strings and 1 eight string... personally... the 7 stringers have much better sound for djent... look up any famous djent band and have a look what they use.

  • @Gazjohnful it`s silly to just look what other ppl use and then just copy that.

meshuggah use 8 strings, so why don`t u say that 8 strings djent the most?

iirc Periphery used 6 strings on their previous recording, they just tuned `em down.

its just ppl like you who say "teh famous use that ima gonna use it too then im so fucking brutal djent" and then this wave goes on and on and suddenly everybody uses 7 strings and say "u know, Volumes use 7 string too eheh" ... okay then ;)

  • @freakguitar1 I clearly stated i have personally experimented and im not the only one to have... THE best sound for Djent tones is from seven strings... argue all you want dude... i couldnt give a fuck... Volumes suck dick dude... mainstream djent.

  • @Gazjohnful u clearly blablabla fucked your mother asshole.

  • @freakguitar1 LOL always nice to see children on youtube

  • That's not how you play Periphery's "New Groove" at the beginning, not even close.

  • pommy poofter

  • Djent = teens buying 8-strings & trying to sound like Meshuggah

  • Comment removed

  • Do you know if this guitar is similar to the RG7321? I just got it about a week ago and it would be great to know that with the right settings my guitar has potential to sound like your setup

  • knight rider amp? O_o
