Definitely not bad considering the wind. I still have trouble getting the 172 to settle down in ground effect sometimes...like you said in a previous comment, the wing is almost too efficient and wants to stay airborne
Didn't seem that bad. I think it was probably worse looking at it on video. I fly an ultralight floatplane and some of my cockpit videos seem bumpier than I remember them.
Not a bad landing at all, considering the circumstances! Also, just as an aside, "NAV III" isn't a model. It's a Cessna 172SP with a NAV III (G1000) avionics package.
This happened to me also, 24 yrs ago, times never change. Good job. Float, recover, compensate. Instructors told me the Cessna wing is so efficient, it doesn't WANT to land.
@skyhawk2958 It definitely wants to keep flying, that's for sure. I also had the flaps @ 30* instead of 10 or 20 which didn't help my getting it on the ground either.
As you say in a description, you should have made a go-around or asked another runway. but you learned a lot from this flight!! thats how you learn flying.
You did really well lol. i've been that situation before too man. you leave the winds are like 4 to 5 and when you come back they're in the 20's and higher. You did just fine!
@cavaco4 That was the exact case in this situation. I had been trying to go for days and then finally convinced the Flight Sup to let me go... probably wasn't my brightest moment. Thanks though!
Looked like a typical crosswind training landing to me, and pretty good for unexpected conditions. Maybe a go-around maybe not, with a runway that large you had plenty of room to get it down. Funny thing, I just did my second solo flight today! I had much better conditions though, so it was nice and relaxing. Pure joy.
Ive pegged a rudder before too. you can still land pretty good. tip once you touch down Immediately hit the aileron into the wind force the wing down and you will stay centered everytime. I learnt to fly an airplane on the ground when I got my tailwheel endorsement. and I am not exaggerating about learning to fly on the ground lol. I have seen my father literally skidding with a crab angle on the runway due to high cross winds. it can be done. but its tricky for sure.
@RippedWookie Hey, you had a bad landing. No big deal. The good part is that you recognized it and learned from it. This video is pretty recent, are you a freshman at Riddle?
@flyboy4692 Nah, I just got around to uploading it. This did happen my freshman year. I'm in my 3rd year now and I can't wait to get out. I've got lots of videos spread around a few harddrives.
I'm really looking for my most recent B-17G videos. I'm pissed that I can't find them.
@flyboy4692 Thanks, me too. I'm not sure if I took the tape and looped it on itself (essentially double-sided tape) or I just taped the side of the camera to the dashboard. I set it right next to the mag compass but without touching the windscreen.
I had a scary hard landing one day when just about the flare in a C150 I flew into a small whirlwind. I too should have gone around but didn't, but did manage to get back on track and land a little harder than normal.
@penguin217 It all comes with experience. I'm glad I got this recorded because it shows me what I should not see on an approach. I'm still alive, you're still alive, and we can both fly tomorrow. I guess that's what counts.

Any landing that you can walk away from, is a good enough landing for me. :)
Good job!

@kevinjamesryan Correct. A gust took me by surprise but I corrected for it right afterwards.

@straighttailpilot I've got other videos somewhere of my proper crosswind landings. I'm still learning all the tricks.
Got a pretty new HD camera and should hopefully have more videos out soon.
